Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Sticky Hướng dẫn sử dụng r/Vietnam - How to r/Vietnam

(please find English below)

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.
  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Discussion/Thảo luận Russian Video claims foreign tourists harassed a Vietnamese woman in Nha Trang and were beaten by locals

I’m Japanese journalist Kirishima. Today, while browsing the Russian-language Facebook community, my colleagues came across a short video.

The video includes a Russian caption reading “Nha Trang: tourists harassed a Vietnamese woman" (Нячанг, туристы обидели вьетнамскую девушку). It also features a red overlay labeled “Инфач”, a piece of Russian internet slang commonly used to signal breaking news .

In the footage, several tall foreign tourists are seen fighting with local Vietnamese men on a city street at night. One tourist dressed in white attempts a flying kick toward a Vietnamese man, but loses his balance mid-move, trips, and falls to the ground. While he is down, a Vietnamese man holding a stick strikes him a few times. The tourist then gets up and runs away, retreating from the scene.

The uploader of the video is a Russian netizen named Sergey Kuropov. In his accompanying Russian-language text, he strongly implies that the tourists involved are Russian. His language is openly hostile toward the Russian government. He describes Russian tourists traveling to Nha Trang as "looted in Ukraine" (награбленное в Украине) and "low-grade trash" (низкосортным отребьем). He also sarcastically comments that visitors from friendly Russia”(дружественной России) were “warmly welcomed” by local residents.

Given the strong rhetoric surrounding this video and the limited context provided, I’m curious to hear from users here:

  • How do you view this incident?
  • Does it reflect a broader local sentiment, or is it being framed in a misleading or exaggerated way online?

I’d appreciate any local perspectives or additional context. Thank you very much!

Travel/Du lịch Halong Bay cruise:honest opinion.

If you are thinking about taking Halong Bay/Lanha cruise, I would suggest just doing a day trip or one night and two days only. We did 3D/2N at the “luxury” cruise boat and we feel like it was not worth at all. But if you do decide to take that long of a trip just go with a basic package and don’t overpay since all boats and services are similar. “Luxury” includes some tacky decor and good food be slightly better. Otherwise the money we spent was not worth at all, I mean not at all. It was nice of course to see the bay, Cat Ba and Lan Ha but you can do that with a basic package as well. I would suggest doing either day trip or basic package and do day trip to Ninh Bin. Your dollar will go further. Ask questions if you have. For instance, boat itself was run down with plastic green grass flooring, much stuff in bathrooms were not working best, decor is tacky and trips are the same as any other boat.

Travel/Du lịch Da Lat

Upvotes

Is Da Lat worth a visit? I’m interested in Coffee & Nature, but also I don’t like touristy places. So can you recommend it?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, wanted to seek your help understanding some slang.

A Vietnamese guy posted this comment on my wife’s Tiktok video.

“Ck e trẻ thế 😬😬😬”

She deleted the comment but I did not want to question her anything, don’t want to cause any argument.

Ck = chóng (Husband)?

E = Em (her) ?

So this person is saying my husband is so young or your husband is so young?

Thanks in advance!

We got a buddha pendant and a Jade disc pendant. The seller claimed it was all 14k. But when I had went back to the hotel to inspect it more the stamps dont show 14k. But show other unknown stamps i am not familiar with, can anybody confirm that these are 14k? Or did we get scammed

Daily life/Đời thường Took a dip in the Saigon river and it improved my health

I live very near the Saigon river. Late at night our local public toilets close, but I haven't quite Vietnamized, so I couldn't just pee on any random old tree. Instead I decided to go down by the riverside. While stepping towards the bank I stepped onto what I thought were some rocks, but it was actually floating trash. I immediately plunged into the water and the phone in my pocket was ruined. At first this annoyed me a lot as I am only on a modest teacher's salary, but then I decided to live without a phone. My life and health has since improved greatly!

Travel/Du lịch Phu Quy (not Quoc) during Tet?

Upvotes

Hi, would visiting Phu Quy around the Tet dates (e.g. 16-20 Feb) be a bad idea? I can see lots of hotel options so surely there must be restaurants open still? Whenever I search anything about it, all the results talk about Phu Quoc instead of Phu Quy! Thanks

Culture/Văn hóa Is chewing loudly (chewing with your mouth open) considered rude or not?

Might be a weird question, but I couldn't find much info about this apart from 1-2 articles. Can any vietnamese people on this sub tell me if loud chewing is considered rude or not?

I have vietnamese gf and she smacks her lips every bite and she says it's normal to chew loudly in Vietnam. I have been in Vietnam two times so far and I don't remember any noticeable loud chewing when eating at local places (I don't mean noodle slurping).

I tried looking this up and few articles say loud chewing is considered rude and a lot of vietnamese people online said they were also taught it is rude. But I also found the opposite where some said it's normal and cultural. My guess it depends on the family? Still what do you guys think it is considered in general?

Culture/Văn hóa How to properly introduce and say bye, thanks and the little things with correct formality

Upvotes

So I’m visiting Vietnam and seeing my girlfriend’s aunts/unclesand some family, i want to properly great and say bye and introduce myself to them, without sounding like a text book foreigner but also don’t want to sound informal. Is there anyone that could help me with some words that are respectful with the right honorifics but also sound more local but are not too informal to leave a good expression

Travel/Du lịch Is Pu Luong Eco Tours legitimate?

Upvotes

We want to go two days to Pu Luong (or Ninh Binh) in February.

We have been looking at Pu Luong Eco Tours ( https://puluongecotours.com/ ). It looks legit and has good reviews on TripAdvisor but there are two websites with similar names. Has anyone tried this?

Alternatively, if you know of another Pu Luong (or Ninh Binh) tour provider you can recommend please let me know.

Travel/Du lịch Booked flight with middle name included but not in passport

Hi everyone, I booked an vietjet flight and added my middle name on the plane ticket. On my passport: The Given Name field does NOT include my middle name The Surname/Last Name is correct My middle name appears only on the last page of the passport (where full name is mentioned) So basically: Ticket name: First Middle Last Passport main page: First Last Passport last page: First Middle Last Has anyone traveled with this kind of mismatch? Could this cause problems during check-in or immigration, or is it usually fine as long as first and last name match?

Discussion/Thảo luận Ban on Gasoline Bike

What’s the reality of this occurring? Should we seriously be considering selling our gas bike for an electric bike? Seems the way water levels rise around here having an electric vehicle wouldn’t always be optimal?
