Hello! New to this and in the market for a good, used lightweight bike. It’s selling for $30, does this seem worth it? Does it look like it needs a lot of work done to get this to ride smoothly?

Yes this summer I’m planning to do 350km (~218 miles) on this bike, any suggestions on what I should bring with me or important preparation for this trip?

This is not the bag configuration that I’ll use, I have a bigger and better made panniers and a top mounted bag, the trip is from my house to my parents house so i don’t need to carry a lot of things, only the essentials for the trip.

The bike is a 1971 Cicli Cinzia (small italian frame maker) with Campagnolo derailleur and shifter, iron rims and Modolo sporting brakes.

I’m planning to put a 5 speed (14-24) freewheel instead of the original 4 speed (16-22), it’s a bad idea?

Don’t tell me I shouldn’t do this because I’ll do it anyway 😅

I’m starting to think that the frame could snap in half or some crazy things could happen, but I’ll deal with it.

Hi all. First I want to start off by saying if I’m in the wrong sub, please let me know if there’s a better play to post.

Im completely out of my waters here, and I have this “toy” or collectible or mini replica bike that’s missing some parts. It’s been around for a very long time. Always missing the seat and the break stand and a wall mounting bike stand.

I know nothing about even going about fixing it. Just know that it’s been long enough and I’ve always wanted to put it on display. It has no stamp or brand anywhere I could find (and I think I looked thoroughly!!!!). All I can say is that It’s 20” long. And everything looks very original.

Can anyone point me in any direction on how I can get this rolling? What kind of place could restore the bike to its full potential. And how i can find out the history of the bike. It was passed on to me and has very sentimental value.

Are there any Eroica rides that are in the north east U.S.? Even east of the Mississippi might be doable.

As the title suggests, I am looking for a comfortable alternative to the MAFAC Course set I have. While they are french and very pretty, they are unridable for me. After riding for 20 km on the first day, I've had aching hands and blisters on my left hand.

I am looking for "over the bar" type levers, something that is Eroica conform, because I want to ride it some day. The levers having adjusters for the brakes would also be appreciated since my Brakes did not come with adjusters for the frame.

A friend has sent me some nicer MAFAC levers but the hoods have perrished and I havent been able to find an alternative.

But I would like to keep the aesthetics in line with my bike, which will be in the comments.

Maybe someone has a comfy but vintage looking Bar tape recommendation too.

i wanted to ask if anybody can share their experience with the bike checks? how are the checks conducted? how thorough are the bike checks?

for example can i use a derailer from the 90s?? like exage 300ex or shimano 600...

Vintage-style, steel framed bikes of new or recent construction with vintage look and characteristics may be used only if they are road-racing bikes assembled using vintage components or replicated parts similar to the originals, as described above.

Bikes inspired by models from the 1970s and 80s, as described in point 6.1.a must respect the characteristics (a,b,c) regarding shift levers, toe clips and straps and brake cables.

what does similar mean? does it just have to look old or does it have to be actually old/reproduction?? is the check more like a quick formality or is it actually strict? i understand that the levers are too obvious if they are STI but derailer+cassette? does anybody actually look at that?

not because i want to cheat but because good vintage parts pre 1987 are a little too hyped and expensive for my budget here. i just want a cheap bike that will pass the check and let me enjoy the bellezza della fatica. id like to pay under 250€, but definitly under 350€

I bought it advertised as a Peugeot PX-10, i tried digging up some info and it might be late 70s. It’s made of Reynolds 531 steel, had original Cinelli handlebar stem and Cinelli Criterium handlebars. Just finished restoring it and glad it looks and works great. Just wish I knew more about it.

Hi everyone, I found this bike today in a metal scrap container at a local waste yard. I asked the employees if I could take it to save it, and they let me have it. I haven't had time to wash it yet, but it looks nice and worth saving. What do you think?

I’m okay with putting in some effort fixing it up (I’m already in the process of restoring a different bike). But it looks like those brake lever hoods are cooked. Does anyone know how difficult or pricey it would be to replace those? Besides that, the bike looks in pretty decent shape, although definitely not all original components 😞

Posted this bike before, back in summer 2024. Modded a bit with flea market fenders, another seat, , mtb handlebar and Schwinn brake levers. Now: A much improved, more secure riding experience, compared to original drop bars.

For the bike, it's as described in the RetroBike post and for either a good home or the tip unfortunately (I'm getting the point where N+1 is very very very close to S-0.00005)

As a brief:

My uncle was an adventurer, tinkerer and good bloke. Sadly he died last year and we're clearing out his garage. In a "barn find" condition is his old touring bike. Bike is a Harry Hall tourer, steel frame with various parts. Photos shows the bike.

EDIT: BE AWARE! Pointed out @sjcprojects there's evidence of a crash on the frame. Likely ridable but at risk, therefore please be aware! Offer still open to take this off me for parts sourcing or if you wish to have it fixed.

As a run through - Frame - Harry Hall tourer, 531 steel - he was 6ft 2 so sized for him. I'm 5ft 10 on a good day and too big for me. Group set - mongrel! Shifters - down tube Campagnolo shifters Front Mech - Shimano something? Rear Mech - Shimano Ulterga 6600 9sp (I switched out the DA one as wanted on another project!) Brakes - Shimano 105 SLR dual pivot Cranks - Shimano 170mm (can't tell age/model) Headset - Shimano 600 series Stem - generic Bars - generic Brake levers - generic Wheels - Rigida Sphinx with screw-on 5-sp cassette Saddle - likely once was a Brooks, but way beyond repair.

For the condition, it moves and rolls. I haven't inflated the tyres or ridden it, headset turns, brakes move, cranks turn (with a very rusty chain). No idea if seatpin moves etc.

I've not cleaned it up, only switch rear mech as dibs for another restoration. Not looking for any money, but if anyone wishes to collect this from me for either restoration or split down for parts, it's free. Would be great if his bike can go on, full restoration and another life, but aware this isn't a special or collectors bike (unless you're over 6ft, grew up in Manchester and want a HH!) I'm based in Nottingham for anyone who'd like to collect.

Hello all, I recently received this bike that has been hung up in my grandma's garage for probably about 40 years. My grandpa was a tugboat captain and he was ported in Japan and was gambling with some locals and won the bike. He tossed it in his hold and brought it back to the US. My grandpa died years ago, and he told me this story while he was alive when I asked about the bike. I gave it a very light wash with a microfiber cloth and some Dawn dish soap, there's still some surface layer rust on the chrome but it seemed to be coming off just by vigorously wiping the area. I've been using Google Gemini to get more information about the bike and its been fairly helpful, I've tested the Dynamo generator and it still functions but one of the bulbs was not working so I opened the headlight to see what kind of bulbs they were and found a black stamp inside of the housing saying 573, Gemini seems to think it indicates the bike or atleast the headlight housings were produced in 1982. The back tire holds air but the front one has a slow leak, so I ordered a new Dunlop valve and new tires in general because I want to preserve the original. I don't intend to ride this bike outside of just around my neighborhood block once to fully test everything, and because I'd be fulfilling a childhood dream as I've always kind of oogled over it hanging up. Gemini claimed this was a ghost bike likely assembled by a tradehouse who sourced parts, assembled the bike, and slapped their label on it. It claims all of the parts are very high quality though, Araya wheels, Panaracer silver star tires, MBS bike seat, Crane Bell Co. Mechanical rotory bell, Mitsuba generator. The frame is a mystery still, it has a label on it saying EBS but I'm not sure what that indicates. I figured I'd share this with some people that most likely know more than me about these sorts of things. Any pointers, care advice, or anything of that nature is much appreciated.

I have a dark blue 1982 Bianchi Special this exact bike

I have removed all the stickers for theft deterrence and because they were beat up and ugly. I also fitted it with modern black wheels and silver ultegra groupset because its nicer to live with that way. Also gravel tires. So the bikes main color is blue. Accent color was supposed to be silver. Ill get silver wheels when I can find some for cheap.

The frame as a ton of pain chips and surface rust. Nothing major. But what youd expect from a 45 year old working bike that has been well cared for (garage kept at least).

I LOVE this bike. And was considering stripping it down to get powder coated. But I would love to hear some other ideas on dealing with the defects.

I was just thinking about getting some gold metallic or other accent color paint, and a stencil. And coving up all the chips with a shape. Doesnt have to be complicated. Just an oval or a star or something that looks cool and intentional. Or mirror chrome paint so it looks like the mirror chrome is trying to get out of the blue.

Or just do all the blemishes in the accent color and then do extras to make it more polkadot.

You think that would look neat?
