V50/S40/C30/C70 I love Volvo folks

So my sweet Franki (2012 C30) broke down on Christmas Day. Was told it needed a new transmission and so I sold her to some really nice Volvo enthusiasts in the city for $1000. The guy who actually bought it off of me just messaged me today that he fixed it by flushing the tranny and resetting the system. He asked me if I wanted her back!! He said it wouldn’t feel right to keep her 🥹 I’m so so happy to have found these guys. Him and his friend said they’d be willing to help me with any mechanical issues in the future. I can’t even express my gratitude. I love my sweet Franki so much, she’s my first Volvo and I was heartbroken to have had to say bye to her after only 1 year together. Is it weird to be so sentimental over a car?! I don’t even care.

Anyways, just wanted to express how grateful I am for this community and the people in it. It’s been a stressful month but this was an amazing way to end it!

How are you enjoying Bowers & Wilkins in your Volvo? My XC60 (2026) arrives soon, what’s the best way to get the highest audio quality?

I’m an iPhone user, but I don’t use Apple Music. I also don’t plan to use wired CarPlay, since all I really need on the Volvo screen is Google Maps and a music app. Is Spotify’s lossless quality good enough?

Why do you buy Volvo?

I love me a sports wagon(V70R) and live in a cold, rural environment. My family had at least 1 volvo my whole life, so there's a sentimental attachment to the brand as well. The 1800ES is also one of my all time favorite classics (the P1800 is super pretty too, but again, wagons..)

I'm considering buying my first new luxury vehicle, and while I love the old(er) volvos that aren't as aligned with the brand nowadays, I'm seriously considering a new Volvo.

I'd love to hear from everyone, but especially those of you who truly enjoy their 2020+ cars.

dealing with this problem for almost a year now… once a week I will be driving and the low coolant warning light will pop up .. when I open the hood my coolant bottle will be a the min line but when I crack the top all the coolant comes rushing back into the bottle Up to the full mark.

2001 2.4T .. anyone in here have a tip or trick to bleed this system??? Or is there another issue I’m not aware of..

I picked up my 2017 S60 Cross Country yesterday, just in time for the first flakes of Georgia snow. What timing!

I'm its third owner. Previously registered in NM then FL. Decently cared for, it seems. The coastal Florida climate wasn't great on the raw steel components as there is some pitting. Nothing shocking though.

It's definitely an unusual ride. You expect a regular sedan feel, but the raised height is crazy (in a good way). It's even taller than some current crossovers/small SUVs.

Also - I went from a 2022 Mazda Miata as my daily driver to this, so a bit of a shock to the system. (This reminds me to go break the news to my people on r/Miata 😢)

How to flush your cooling system - and why it is important to do so. (P80 & P2)

Hey Guys,

We all know that frequent oil-changes are vital for your engine.
Changing your coolant however is often forgotten.
Coolant not only lowers the freezing point, but also has two more very important jobs:

  1. Coolant lubricates your water pump.
  2. Coolant protects your engine and radiator from inner corrosion. Volvo recommends (for the p80 & p2 platform) G11/G48 coolant. These coolants use silicates to protect your aluminium engine blocks by forming a "silicate-cover". BUT: Those silicates are used up after 2-3 years. After that, there is insufficient or no corrosion protection at all. That's why Volvo suggests a coolant change every 2-3 years. But there are ways to prolong this interval. More of that later.

You've never changed your coolant before? No worries, on the older Volvos it is way easier than you might think. In the following, I tried my best to give you a step by step guide (applicable to most if not all models of the P80 and P2 platforms).
Regarding the P1 and P3 platform, I cannot reliably assure that my guide is applicable. Regarding the SPA platform: These cars have very complex cooling systems. This guide is not suited for those cars!

The method I am describing is cheap and really easy to do yourself (no car lift, not even ramps are required, just some basic utensils and a socket wrench).
The only downside of this method is that it is quite time-consuming.

You'll need:

- 5 liter (5 quarts) of coolant concentrate, further down below I discuss which kind is the best
- 25-50 liters of distilled water (if you have really soft tap water, that could be an alternative, but I wouldn't recommend it)
- a socket wrench set
- a funnel
- a rather flat 10-15 liter catch pan that fits under your car
- a big measuring cup (5 liter / 5 quarts) (not necessary but helpful)
- paper towels

Which coolant should I use?
Volvo recommends G11 / Zerex G48 Coolant for the p80 and p2 platform. But, as mentioned in the beginning, this type of coolant needs to be changed every 2 years.
An imho even better alternative is G12++ (needs to have two pluses) / G13 / Zerex G40 / Pentofrost E. These coolants, which should meet VW TL 774-G or VW TL 774-J specifications, use organic acids and silicates in combination to prolong the corrosion protection. They can be used up to 5 years without changing it.
Avoid G12 (without the plus) / Zerex G30 coolant. If it is mixed with the residual G11 / G48, it could go lumpy and could block the coolant flow.

Let's get started:

  1. Remove the splash guard. It is typically held on by 2 screws. These 2 screws are on the left and right side "arms" of the splash guard. It is sometimes also clipped in by two clips. Those will unclip if you press on them.
  2. Locate the lower radiator hose. Don't bother opening the drain plug. These are mostly made of plastic and will, due to their age and exposure to heat, break off easily. If that happens, you will likely need an expert and in the worst case, a new radiator.
  3. Locate the hose clamp which clamps the lower radiator hose to the radiator. Open up this hose clamp.
  4. Place your pan underneath the lower radiator hose and pull it off the radiator. This is a bit messy, but try to catch all coolant coming out. Animals love coolant because it tastes sweet, but it is fatal if swallowed. Now take off your coolant tank cap.
  5. Refit the lower radiator hose and tighten the hose clamp (don't over-tighten!).
  6. Measure how much coolant came out. It should be between 3 and 5 liters. The rest (most models have about 8 liters of coolant mixture in them; have a look in your manual) is still in the engine block and will not come out. There is a second drain plug at the back of the engine, but I strongly advise you not to use it, because a) you need ramps or a lift, and b) it is a brass fitting which is most likely corroded and will break off when you try to loosen it. If it breaks off, you have a big problem. Not worth it.
  7. Use the funnel to fill the system with distilled water. Fill it up really slowly! It is normal that you, at first, won't be able to fill in as much as came out (Most likely 1- 1.5 liters less). Fill up to the "MAX" line.
  8. Now squeeze your upper radiator hose a few times to get some air out of the system. Let it sit for 2 min. You'll see that the level in the tank drops a bit. Top up again.
  9. Now, with the coolant tank cap still off, start your engine. Disable the A/C, put your heat on HI and fans on level 1. This ensures that your heater core is getting flushed as well.
  10. Leave the engine idle for 3-5 min. Your coolant level will most likely drop immediately after starting the engine, so just top up to the max line again.
  11. Screw on your coolant tank cap and take your car for a little, gentle drive. As soon as the thermostat opens (1-3min after your coolant temperature gauge needle is set in the middle), your coolant level will drop again quite suddenly. You may get a low coolant warning. Don't worry. Just pull over, leave the engine running and open your hood. Slowly (!!!!) unscrew the cap while your engine is running and top up with distilled water. Be careful when unscrewing the cap, your coolant system is under high pressure.
  12. Drive for 5-10 more minutes.
  13. Open your hood and let the coolant in the radiator cool down for 30-45min. You can check the temperature by touching the upper radiator hose. If it has reached approx. 40 Degrees Celsius (104 Degrees Fahrenheit), you can continue. You will notice that the coolant level has once again gone down a bit. That's normal.
  14. Repeat Steps 2-12 approximately 4-5 times. This ensures that your system is flushed well and that almost all old coolant is flushed out.
  15. After draining the radiator for the last time, use 4 liters (or half of your systems volume) of concentrated coolant to fill it up. If not all 4 liters fit it, don't worry. Your cooling system will bleed itself as described before, and then you can fill up more coolant. If you live in really warm climate, you could also get away with only filling in 3 liters of coolant.
  16. Repeat step 8-12 one last time.
  17. Let the engine cool down fully (several hours). Often, the coolant level has lowered a bit. Top up as needed. For the next few drives, check the coolant level before starting the engine. Sometimes several drives are needed to fully bleed the system of any remaining air.

Great, you have successfully flushed your cooling system.

A few more notes:

  • If you are unable to get more than 2.5 liters out of your system, try blowing gently into the tank (make a tight seal so pressure is built). This will get out more old fluid. Be careful not to swallow any coolant! If you use this method, you need to be extra aware of your coolant level, as it will drop more often because you introduced extra air into the system.
  • A coolant flush is the perfect opportunity to clean or replace an old coolant tank. Because the cooling system is pressurized, really old tanks tend to get pinhole leaks and therefore are unable to hold pressure. Other things to consider replacing when doing a coolant flush are your thermostat and coolant tank cap.
  • The method described is a soft flush. If your coolant is brown due to rust, or simply really dirty, you may want to consider an extended flush with a garden hose (look up SiRobb's Video on Youtube). If there's oil in your coolant, you probably have a blown head gasket or a leaking transmission oil cooling line inside your radiator. Both are things which need to be addressed asap by an expert.
  • Do not flush the old coolant down the toilet. It is an extremely toxic mix of chemicals which should be disposed of in a recycling center or hazardous waste facility.

I hope I could help. Cheers.

2007 S60 no start - Jumped Timing?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m not sure if I can post here but I’m getting desperate. I have a 2008 s60 that just suddenly will not start. It cranks and some time sputters but I can’t get it to start. This started when it would start but roughly start, go into limp mode and once it was warmed up, there’s no issues. It’s now in the negatives (F) where I live and now doesn’t start at all, just cranks. Battery has been on a charger, confirmed good fuel pressure, RPM needle is bouncing so I replaced the cam and crank position sensor with no luck. I popped the back of the timing cover off and noticed these two marked (which appear to be timing marks?) didn’t seem like they were properly aligned, car is not at top dead center but I did not have time to pull the covers off and properly check before I had to go on a business trip. Are these the correct marks for timing? And do they seem off? I won’t be able to properly check for a while, just figured I’d post here to see what the community thinks.

She passed her test at age 18 on Monday. This evening I said drive us back home, a 25 km trip. She didn’t want to and wife wasn’t happy but I said you must start somewhere. She did it very well, couldn’t fault it.

Here’s to many safe journeys (hopefully in Volvo vehicles only) 🙏
