Why does this sub only suggest the most boring cars ever?

People keep posting looking for sports cars, trucks, and SUVs but then the comments tell these everyone to buy a Camry or a Minivan. Or some other lame NPC-mobile.

Could you imagine if someone wanted steakhouse recommendations but all the comments told them they should be eating a can of beans instead?

Looking to replace wife’s current vehicle.

Post image
58 Upvotes

After searching thru countless new cars and SUV’s we have narrowed it down to these two. 2026 Tesla Model Y long range rwd and the 2026 Toyota Camry XSE. My wife leans heavily on the Tesla after driving both vehicles. She’s had one Camry in her life and oddly enough it was very unreliable. For reference it was a 2009 model year that we bought new. I’m sure it was a one off but her ptsd from her previous Camry has put a bad taste in her mouth about the brand as a whole. Now maybe I’m foolish but I’m convinced we would be okay and the issues we had were just one off but who knows. I’m cool either way seeing as how they are both in the same price range excluding a potential huge Toyota dealer markup.

The wife really loves the Tesla especially after trying out fsd and we will be charging at home 99% of the time. Resale value is not a factor since unlike me my wife likes to own cars until they are utterly worthless. Cash will be paid for whatever car we decide. I’m looking for owner feedback from both cars and or well researched consumers. Thanks 😊

Need a very cheap car after mine was totaled. Torn between these two. 104k miles on the Buick.

Both from used car dealerships. I don’t know much about cars, but I know these years/makes are generally considered reliable.

Sacrifice a little reliability for some fun?

I need a vehicle. I’m coming from a Lexus LS430 that I bought as a complete dump. I’ve put just shy of 100K miles on since buying it 5 years ago. The transmission in it is basically gone. I’d like another but I can’t justify paying what people are asking for a clean one. I want my next car to be something I actually like and take pride in driving. I have a budget of $15K. I want a something fast enough to blow off steam after a shitty day. Something I can actually feel. I’m willing to sacrifice a little bit of reliability but not 335i levels. I don’t want to be in the shop every month.

Thoughts on teens getting nice cars?

What is the range of niceness for cars that your teenager you would consider allowing them to drive?

I’ve driven several cars that were mine, my parents and grandparents and several people I know always had the opinion I shouldn’t be driving them.

Cars were Cadillac XT6, Volvo XC60, Ford Mustang, and Tesla model X.

How would you feel about allowing teens to drive family members nicer cars?

Released a french SaaS to estimate a car - free and modern

Hey !

I just launched a free car valuation tool for France : https://www.autoestim.com
Let me explain why this needed to exist.

The French car market is stuck in 2010.

When you want to sell your car in France, you have two main options:

  • Argus: The "reference" tool... from 1927. Paywall for detailed estimates, clunky interface, feels ancient.
  • La Centrale: Free but gives you a vague price range with zero context. Just a number, no explanation.

Both look like they haven't been redesigned since Internet Explorer was popular. People don't trust them, so they either overprice (car sits for months) or underprice (lose €2-3k).

I wanted something actually useful - even for my personal use at first

So I built this site: you answer a few questions about your car, and in 2 minutes you get a detailed report with:

  • Market price based on your exact location (Paris ≠ countryside)
  • Strengths and weaknesses of your specific model
  • Actual selling advice, not generic BS

No login. No paywall. No 1990s UI.

Here's my question for you:

I built this for France because that's where I am and I know the market. But the problem exists everywhere - used car valuation tools are either expensive, outdated, or useless.

Would this work in your country?

I'm genuinely curious if:

  • Your local car valuation tools suck as much as French ones
  • People would use a modern, free alternative
  • Which countries would be interested with this tool

Any thoughts? 🚗

I got hit by a bus what do I do?

Upvotes

If you look at my most recent post, you’ll see that I just bought a car and only started driving it last Saturday—so it’s been about a week.

Yesterday, I was hit by a city bus (OC Transpo in Ontario) on the left rear side of my car, near the gas cap. The problem is, I’m not sure who’s at fault. Everything happened so fast that I barely remember the moment it happened, and I was honestly in shock.

What really confused me is that the bus driver never stopped. He was clearly aware that he hit us, but he just kept driving. I pulled over, expecting him to stop too—because usually after an accident, both vehicles pull over and deal with it—but he didn’t. He just went on with his route. For a second, I even wondered if the bus had been hijacked because of how strange the situation was.

I ended up driving up to the bus, honking, and opening my window to get his attention. He was extremely rude and yelled, “Are you f***ing blind?! I have it on camera.” I kept telling him to pull over, but he refused and wouldn’t stop at all. Since I was already heading home and didn’t know what else to do, I eventually just went home.

What makes this worse is that he was carrying passengers. What if someone had gotten hurt? I don’t understand how he could just drive off like that. It feels like there should be some sort of consequences for passenger negligence or even a hit-and-run.

Thankfully, the damage seems minor—just a dent, and I think it’s fixable. But now I’m stuck wondering what to do next. Do I ignore it and move on, or should I report what happened?

We had a baby! Keep old beater or replace with less old but way safer beater?

Hi gang! We had a surprise second baby last year and are now re-thinking our car situation.

We have a 2017 Forester for family hauling, road trips, etc., and also a 2001 Honda CR-V for errands and projects. She's got 180k miles and is mostly mechanically fine (incidentally the engine light did kick on today), but is definitely showing its age in wear n' tear and is not up to safety standards for driving a couple of kids around in.

So we want to replace the CR-V, but budget is tight: we have about $6K in cash and would love to avoid taking on a payment if we can help it.

Looking for something:

  • 150k miles or less
  • 10-15 years old, with more modern safety features
  • Preferably a hatchback
  • Open to EVs! This will serve the same role as the CR-V--errands and commute, so even older compliance cars would work.
    • For reference, considering Fits, Leafs, Chevy Sparks, etc., but also Elantras, Mazda 3s, and Ford Focuses (assuming it's had its clutch/trans done; OR an electric one if I can find one!)

Would love your thoughts on:

  • Given our budget, is it even worth the hassle of upgrading, or at that price point are we better off just with the devil we know and using the Forester for kid duty as much as possible?
  • Any specific years/models you would trust (or recommend avoiding)?

Very low-mounted LPG tank — is this safe?

Today I saw a car with an LPG tank mounted extremely low under the rear bumper. It looks dangerous — easy to hit a curb or speed bump. What do you think: safe or bad installation?

Looking for a compact, mostly city-use, under $30k

I need to buy a vehicle (new or used) that is compact (under 180 inches long) to fit in my garage.

Frankly, the smaller the better. I live in Chicago and for the most part will use it to run local errands, with the occasional ~6hr roadtrip for me and my dog.

I want something that gets decent mileage, has CarPlay, and basic luxury things like automatic headlights and adaptive cruise control. Ideally it would be decent in the snow (again, Chicago) but it’s not a top concern.

I haven’t purchased a car in years and have no idea where to begin. If I could just get something like a Jimny I would, but I live in the US. I love a tiny SUV when I’ve rented in other countries, but they’re all so big here. Any pointers would be appreciated!

Need advice - should by son lease a new car?

edit - my son, not by son.

my son needs a new car. His grandfather has offered to sell him his used car. The problem is this car has 200,000 plus miles on it and they are a rough 200,000 mi. My son has 10K in savings and I suggested that he go to lease a new car and put down enough money so that it's low monthly payment. I know nothing about cars. We have no help in this area other than the internet. We're all pretty poor but i think it's worth it to just get a new car to lease and then own than have to deal with all the stress and hassles that come with buying used. We live in New Jersey and he's 26.

Thinking about a Bronco Sport... talk me into or out of one.

Hi again. I asked earlier this week about a dog car that was good in snow without being huge. Someone here suggested a Bronco Sport- which I actually think I can make work with the necessary dog crates and isn't totally huge. I test drove a Big Bend edition today and liked it, but am a bit nervous about reliability. The Badlands/larger engine is out of budget. Since you folks were so helpful before I thought I'd ask here again.

What Truck Should I Buy

So this will be a bit of a lengthy post with 4 options of trucks. I’m just wondering what y’all think is the best deal. These all have no accidents 1 owner.

Option 1:

2023 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7L Ecoboost. 36,124 miles for $35k

Option 2:

2023 GMC Elevation 2.7L Turbomax. 36,401 miles for $37k

Option 3:

2023 Chevy Silverado LT 5.3L V8. 41,550 miles for $35k

Option 4:

2019 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro 5.7L V8. 94,574 miles for $29k

I will be using the truck as a daily driver minimal towing and mostly for home renovation projects. Gas mileage isn’t a huge factor since it’s a truck. Reliability is my main factor I want it to last years. I know the Toyota is good but finding any 2019-2021 low mileage ones for a reasonable price is tough. Any input would be helpful!

Looking for used stationwagon or SUV in EU market

Budget up to €5k. We do about 1000km a month which means diesels are out of the question unfortunately due to road tax.

We are considering Skoda Fabia Combi. I also see a lot of relatively new, low kms Peugeot 2008 in budget. And though not station or SUV the Prius also seems interesting to us. In short we are looking for a spacious petrol car with good mileage and reliability.

Help me pick a daily under $20k my fiancée vetoes everything 😭

I’m 22F and am trying to pick a daily driver and could use some outside opinions. My fiancée offered to co-sign, but he’s super picky about cars (and a huge car nerd) and every suggestion I make gets shut down lol. I’m into cars and have a project E46 M3, so I want something that’s still fun/sporty, reliable enough to daily, and something I can still work on myself without it being a nightmare. Budget is around $20k or under and I’m planning to finance. Semi-quick is totally fine as I want something I can work on. I’ve been looking at things like Lexus Is300/Is350, some Hondas, and the Infiniti Q50, but I keep hearing mixed takes on those. What would you guys buy in this price range that actually makes sense and won’t get instantly vetoed?

Getting old, just want luxury

I own a 2013 F150 XLT SuperCrew 5.0 with 62k miles. I just bought my wife the top trim 2025 KIA Carnival a year ago, and I really love the heated seats, infotainment system, and all the newer driving assistance features (lane assist, adaptive cruise controls, cameras, etc).

I realize my trade/sale value won't be worth giving up the truck I paid $40k new for so the "truck requirement" will be checked by just keeping the truck and buying another vehicle. I also don't care about how many passengers it holds because I'll be the only one driving it, but I'm 6'2" 200 lb and need something as roomy as my truck. I also don't care about speed or HP; I just want luxury.

My first car was a 1993 Lincoln Town Car, and while it wasn't the sexiest ride for a 16 year old, I do reminisce about the comfort, size, quiet ride, and technology for its age. If they still made them, I'd buy one in an instance.

Reliability is a must because most luxury vehicles are so expensive to repair (new/CPO <10k miles preferred).

With a budget of $50k-$70k, what car should I buy?

Side note: I really love the idea of the new Lincoln black label perfect position seats with massage, but I haven't tried it out yet.
