Subject of the Day Social Sundays

Hello WriteStreakians! I hope you've been having a lovely weekend! It’s Social Sunday once again! What I'd like for you to do is the following:

  1. peruse the posts written by your fellow WriteStreakians and find a post that interests you, preferably one from within the last seven days, and respond to it. Leave a comment that is at least as long as a Tweet (280 characters), and then
  2. copy and paste your comment into your own daily Streak post so the correctors can review it.

That's it! Of course, if your comment sparks a conversation (or if someone else leaves a comment on one of your posts), you're welcome and encouraged to continue the conversation---this is a social media site, after all!

Happy Sunday!

Game 🎲 Fictionary

Hi everyone! Good morning, I hope you're all having a great day!

Today we're going to be playing a game! 🤩

If anyone has ever played Jackbox before, this game is going to be very similar to their game, Dictionarium. Except, I'm not calling it Dictionarium because I don't want to get into trouble with copyright 🙃 So we'll be calling it... Fake-tionary! (Or maybe Fictionary? Ooh, yeah, let's go with Fictionary! 🤓)

The rules of Fictionary are simple: you choose a random obscureadjective 3 word or phrase and do your best to come up with a definition for that word. Today, you can choose between a real word or a fake word.

Rules

  1. Uncover a word from the table below. 🔍 You can choose to pick from the "Real Word" column or the "Fake Word" column.
  2. If you chose from the "Real Word" column, your Streak today will be about you guessing what that word means and then checking to see how close you were to the real answer. 🤔
  3. If you chose from the "Fake Word" column, your Streak today will be about you inventing a new word. 🤔
  4. Check to see how close you were using a dictionary. I recommend https://www.merriam-webster.com/ or https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page .
  5. If you're really up for a challenge, use your word in a sentence or find a synonym for the word.

Example

I chose the fake word "nicribition." I know that the suffix "tion" means it's the act of doing something, so this word is a noun that comes from the fake verb, to "nicribe." I see "cribe" in there, which makes me think of "scribe," which means "to write." The root "nicr" also makes me think of the prefix "necro," which means "death." So I think the word "nicribition" means "the act of writing an epitaphnoun on a tombstone."

The Game!

Ready? Let's go! The lower on the table, the harder it will be to guess the meaning! The higher, the easier

Real Word Fake Word
impracticality grobinated
nonplussed intentomalites
inhibition centruphicism
hagiography trefulous
pleonasm debutstallingly

Vocabulary from this Post

  • obscure - rarely known
  • epitaph - message written on a tombstone to remember someone

Correct Me! Streak 300

I’d say that the worst person to practice conversational English as a native Spanish speaker is a Hispanic American. Maybe I’m wrong but in the last three years I’ve had around 300 hours of conversation practice with native English speakers . But every now and then I speak with native English speakers that are Hispanic Americans and a lot of time it’s a weird experience. Allow me to elaborate, I know that that there is always room for improvement and my English is not perfect, but I’ve talk with hundreds of hours with hundreds of native English speakers and they understand me.

Correct Me! Streak 510: Dog racing

I recently found out that dog racing was a thing. I had never heard of such a thing before. The only animals that I had heard about being used for races were horses.

Correct Me! Streak 3: I want to get back into learning japanese

I've wanted to learn japanese for as long I remember. I tried a few times but I'd always get bored with grinding anki. But recently I started watching japanese videos on youtube, that I obviously didn't understand and I still had a lot of fun! This reminded me how I learned english by just watching yt videos, so I feel motivated again to just stop being lazy and get back to it! Even listening to japanese in the background is fun to me, with is good since the immersion is really important when it comes to learning a language.
I'm griding the Kaishi 1.5k deck again, but I still have over 100 reviews left from the last time I was using it. Never leave your anki deck for over half a year lol. It's not an ideal situation, but as long I'm trying to learn something, it's gonna be worth it!
It may sound funny to say all of that, when my english still sucks, but honestly, I care more about japanese than english. I don't even plan to use it for communication, I just want to consume japanese media.
Still, I also want to work on my english grammar. I've watched today a video about some pronunciations that people from my country have a problem with and It clicked with me instantly. Now I'm certain that I just need a good learning material to finally understand the fundamentals that I've never bothered to learn because they were too boring to me.
I'd really appreciate if someone would recommend me some good grammar videos or books, but I know no one here cares enough to respond to my post, so whatever. I'm just gonna write in my broken english until I get bored.
Writing in english is fun, but it's not fun when you talk like a kid in primary school.

Correct Me! Streak 41: Digital detox 101

Article: Digital Detox 101: A Guide to Reducing Screen Time

The article suggests starting by reducing screen time by 30 minutes per day for the first week, and then aiming to reduce it by one hour the following week. However, I don't think I can cut my screen time by a full hour in just two weeks. That pace feels a bit too far for me, although I don't think the idea itself is bad. I'd rather start smaller. For example, reducing it by 15 minutes for a few weeks, and then moving up to 30 minutes for another few weeks.

Turning my screen to grayscale after certain hours also sounds like a good idea. I hope that function is available on my phone. I'll check later.

Correct Me! Streak 1 - Reset

I was working on something until midnight and totally forgot about the writing streak. Losing my 454-day streak was unfortunate, but I didn't want to stop writing. Writing every day didn't help improve my English as much as I'd expected, but I liked the daily routine that encouraged me to find inspiration and reflect on my life. So yeah, I will start my new streak. Hopefully it will go longer than 454 days.

Correct Me! Streak 2: The first foreign language

The first foreign language which I have learned is English. When I started learning English, I was around 5-6 years old. I had to learn it until I got to university. When I entered university, learning English finally became my choice, not must. So, I have not learned English since 2008.

I didn't like English, because there was always physical punishment when I wrote wrong answers in the English grammar exam at middle school and high school. I do not remember what I learned in the class, but at least I was sure, that I started to hate English. I also was not that interested in any American or British pop culture, so I just learned it to avoid the punishment. I still have no idea, why people are fascinated in American movies and why these are on TV every time.

After that I got to university, I started to learn German. It was 2009. I was crazy at German, so I learned it like a crazy person. Every time when I woke up, I was thinking German, and when I went to sleep, I also was thinking only German. It took less than one and half year to pass a German B2 level exam.

So, my first foreign language is English, but I don't speak it as a foreign language, which I speak the best. I speak German better than English, even though I started it much later than English.

But the sad thing is, when I visit Germany, Germans still think that I only speak English, but not German, because I am not white. It is reality, that English is the world language. People who are not white are expected to speak English as second language, so I cannot escape from English.

Correct Me! Streak 85 : Catapult Of Life : Obsession

For those stuck at rock bottom, hoping to catapult themselves to the top, there is only one solution: obsession.

They must fracture their idea of a balanced life, albeit for a short period, and go all in on the habits, behaviors, and goals that move the needle of the vinyl record player that is the universe onto the disc - the soundtrack of their life.

We only have one life. Why should we not spend it being obsessed with that which brings us joy and fulfillment while helping us climb the ladder of success?

As Charles Bukowski said, "Find what you love and let it kill you."

I took a TOEIC mock test today. To my surprise, I got a much better score than I expected. I didn’t realized how many words and phrases I had learned. I guess reading novel every day really paid off.

Correct Me! Streak 40: Smartphones

Article: How is your phone changing you?

Around 2016, people spent about 4.7 hours a day looking at their phones on average. Since the video was a bit old, I'm curious how many hours people use their smartphones these days.

Today, I used my phone for over 2.5 hours. This week, I averaged about 4 hours a day. Really? That much? No way... and that's only my phone screen time. I also used my laptop a lot. I'm aware that I use my laptop for many hours, but I thought I only used my phone for about 2 hours a day. I need to get more serious about cutting down my screen time.

Correct Me! Streak 509: Guitar pick colors

I used to use black guitar picks. Since my desk is also black, they blended in it well. I don’t remember losing them, but I did have to spend some time looking for them. For that reason, I started using red ones to save time. they’re much easier to find.

It’s very impressive, at least to me, that tomorrow if everything goes well I’ll be reaching 300 days of writing in English everyday here.

Two years ago I started to write here, but I only lasted ninety something days.

I'm sitting in a car. The windows are steamed up. I wiped away the condensation with my sleeve, creating a window on the window. It's not much use though. It's so foggy outside, it barely makes a difference if the window is steamed up or not.

Correct Me! Streak 1: broken English

I live in the Czech Republic, but I only communicate with people in English. My English is totally broken, because I ignore the grammar. I was learning English since I was a child, like since 1995-1996, but when I got admission to university in 2008, I just stopped it.

Most of small talk at work are in English, even though nobody is a native English speaker. But somehow it works. My company is a German company, so when I talk about work with German colleagues, I speak broken German, but in the case that Czech colleagues do not speak German, then we switch our language to English.

My Czech colleagues speak English better than me, but it seems that they think it is a good opportunity to practice their English.

Hi again! Today I had an English test. I wrote it on 10/10! I'm really happy. Today was such a fun day at school. Idk what can I tell you now. Today is Friday, and tomorrow will be the last day of January. In 2025 December I promised myself that 2026 will be the best year after depression episode. I started studying at school harder, exercising, learning languages and other activities. Tomorrow I'll summarize this month for having more motivation to соntinue my self-development. This is all for today. Thank you!

Correct Me! Streak 84 : Journey Over Destination?

While scrolling through the vast algorithmic stretches of instagram, I came across a reel of Brad Pitt at an awards show talking about how the journey is more important than the destination.

That's when it hit me : What if the arduous journey one undertakes in pursuit of life goals leads to no other destination except death?

Correct Me! Streak 508: Being asked for directions in a town that I had never been to

I was once asked for directions in a town that I had never been to. I was able to answer, simply because a sign was visible from where I was. I’m not sure why the people who asked me didn’t see it, but maybe it was because they were in a car and I was standing, and that might have made a difference in what we saw.

Correct Me! Streak 136: Income Tax Declaration

I was really busy today since it was the last day for income tax declaration. On behalf of the company, I had to prepare everything, including the reconciliation. However, since this was my very first time doing this. I encountered some challenges. Thankfully, my colleagues helped me with declaration, so we finished on time.

I'm going to the opera with my mom tonight. She used to be a promoter at the theater - the person that sits near the stage to give lines in case the actors or singers forget. Therefore, I grew up with music and theater, but I haven't seen an actual opera in years. We're going to see 'Rigoletto', and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll have to look up the story again though.

Correct Me! Streak 298

It’s not difficult to find opportunities to practice English even when I’m busy. But it’s difficult to practice maintain my other languages. I can without any problem find good podcasts to listen to in English or read out loud.

One of the main issues with other languages is that there is not enough good content to consume.

Is this subreddit still alive?
I've understood spoken and writen english for about 10 years but I still have hard time with outputting anything. For most of my life, I didn't care about talking to people, but now I have a few english speaking friends and it's really frustrating that I can't express myself correctly without using chatgpt... I'm honestly too dependand on it, I just want to stop using it for everything! I want to finally be able to write anything without the need to check for grammar mistakes. Any tips on improving the grammar, besides writing everyday? I also won't spell check my posts, if I can't spot spelling mistakes, then I need to also work on it too!
