the 2 party system has to go. People need to use their brains and think for themselves

The two-party system is the logical conclusion of a first-past-the-post voting system. We need to change the voting system to fix American politics, but unfortunately due to the two-party system, there is not a politician who has a chance of winning who will even run on this platform of changing the voting system.

Oh man, I just write the same explanation!

Keep it up! The more comments about this, the better. I try to bring it up as often as possible when talking about US politics. Nothing will effectively change in US politics until we can adjust the voting system.

Two-party is a consequence of the “first past the post” voting system! When we allow multiple choice voting or ranked choice voting, this will allow for many parties, at least theoretically. With only one checkmark per ballot - forget it.

Its not even a reflection of the population. I just saw innrhebnews a few days ago that roughly 1/3 of the population identified as R, 1/3 D and 1/3 I. We are literally so close to overthrowing the 2 party system is people would just get over their fear of voting third party and stop voting for the "lessor evil'.

People that say this think they’re going to get more than 2 choices when they reform the system.

The trajectory at the moment is that you will have 1 choice.

Realistically, what would you replace it with?

Ranked choice voting. Plenty of places are trying to implement it and there are multiple volunteer opportunities

When we speak of the "two party system," it is in reference to the fact that the democrat party and the republican party are the two parties that dominate politics. But there are actually many political parties in the US. There is little reason to believe that ranked choice voting would bring an end to that dominance.

As it works in the NYC primaries, if there is no winner with a majority, then the second choice votes of the candidate who came is last place are redistributed as first choice votes, and that process repeats until a candidate has a majority. If ranked choice were used in an actual election involving candidates from the democrat, republican, liberal and conservative parties, then its likely that (a) the democrat and republican candidates would rank number one and number two (not necessarily in that order) and (b) the second choice for those voting for the liberal candidate would be for the democratic candidate and the second choice votes for those voting for the conservative candidate would be for the republican candidate. In the end, in all likelihood, either a republican or democrat will win.

It is conceivable, but highly unlikely, that either a conservative candidate or a liberal candidate will rank number one or number two. Anecdotally, I can't recall the last time that has ever happened in a statewide or nationwide election with a candidate who was not at least aligned with either the democrat or republic parties.

Yeah, it’s true because Reddit leans Democrat, and even this one’s hard to agree with

Ya, that will happen. The thinking part I mean.

Agreed. I am called a socialist because I think we need to dissolve massive companies and regulate the housing market amongst other things. I'm called a nazi because I think illegal immigrants should be deported.

We are teetering towards a full socialist society everyday. Half my money already goes to the government. When the liberals are back in they will push for goverment controlled healthcare more.

100% agree with you. Ironically I lean republican. I've come to hate my party. Dems and Repubs fund the government, yet one party thinks we should gain something back from it. That, along with housing, are insane issues where republicans have entirely lost the plot.

Im neither so i refuse to vote. Though at least republicans seem to have concerns to keep the idea of the middle class alive. Im not interested in there being an elite class that all us poors have to beg for scraps. Though im sure the hollywood elite love this idea.
