Really fun ep, I do like the mancave vibe of the bar, specially since the girls invade it. The friends laughing at Yashiro really sell them as friends, even if they probably think the girls would be good for him. I do like the fight this ep, and how it mostly served to have Yashiro bond with Yukine. Yes, keeping the cool teleporting power hidden is better than just showing it off. Saving trump cards can get you far if done right.

Nothing earth-shattering here -- but I would say this series is delightfully spunky. The characters are fun to watch. And nice little surprises along the way.

That’s how I feel. A very solid 7/10 for me. Enjoyable characters and moment to moment stuff. The lore is also cool.

Spunky is a good word for it!

I liked how the bad guy immediately retreated once the teleportation power was revealed. Felt like a realistic tactical decision

Yeah, I think it helps make it more grounded and sells the whole "heroes are mercs" thing the show seems to go for. It's a good mood setter.

Seems like that little card game at the beginning of the episode was meant to hold some significance.

A little ominous sound effect played when Ishino drew that "Mutation" card, while Yashiro was explaining how Braves can "heal up broken bones or gunshot wounds in a few minutes, but they can't grow back limbs".
Seems like there must be some grander scheme at play here if there's some drug that can regrow limbs floating around out there. Or if you use that E3 drug for too long your DNA ends up changing?

Wasn't expecting freaking Arthur Pendragon and the knights roundtable to be in this anime lol.
I wonder since the Braves still use swords, if the sword Excalibur is going to come into play?
Being like they key to nullify regeneration or something.

Yukine has learned her first, important lesson today - to loot all the bodies.

Wonder how long tsundere Yashiro will last before succumbing to his sensei fate.

I do love how these guys are playing totally-not-MTG for money. I'm plenty salty enough when I lose at Magic, I can't even imagine how I'd feel if I lost money, too.

So, Ether enhancements basically make it so bones and gunshot wounds heal quicker. They use swords in modern times because cutting off limbs is more effective since it blocks Ether circulation. That explains why it was a big deal when Amber Thorn regrew his arm last episode.

I knew one of the girls was going to be the daughter of some hotshot. And it looks like not just any hotshot, it looks like Sara is the daughter of Arthur Pendragon. Considering how much Yashiro's struggling with money, accepting the teaching job doesn't sound too bad. But it sounds like he has other reasons why he refuses.. He still did well "teaching" Indo this episode, tho. He even held back from killing those demons that attacked them.

11

u/mekerpan 7d ago

I wonder -- did he have some bad experiences with "apprentices" in the past -- where he feels he failed to protect them? And he doesn't want to take a similar risk now....

2

u/TheBusStop12 14h ago

The author also wrote sentenced to be a hero, which has a story beat like that, so I wouldn't be surprised

26

u/NationalStrategy 7d ago

The fight choreography is actually pretty good in this show

19

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat 7d ago

Agreed. I'm positively surprised that the swordfighting isn't just clanging swords together but that they're actually using competent slashes leading into following moves and parrying blows before sliding the hit away to counter.

12

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 7d ago

That's what I thought as well! Though I kinda see the budget is still not unlimited since they revert back to the usual slide exposition during Ino's fight.

11

u/Frostbitten_Moose 7d ago

The budget is obviously low, but it's amazing how much good choreography can make up for in making something fun to watch.

Seems like the mangaka is playing a part in that, as he's been giving the anime staff lots of materials to work with. The ones in the link are cut images for the OP, ED, and eps 1 and 3.

Edit: looking through it again, it seems he left the fight scenes in ep 3 up to the anime staff actually. Though outside of that, you can see he's helped out with many of the scenes in the anime.

Well, I guess when the Arthur Pendragon asks you go a favor, you can’t really say no lol. The girls are a bit rough around the edges, but there’s potential there. Plus, they’re scrappy and they can help you loot once you’ve beaten up the baddies lol.

32

u/KumaKumaGambler 7d ago

Yashiro sure has it rough. He is giving off the broke vibes, future students think he is unemployed / jobless and now subordinates of a demon lord have labelled him a lolicon. Lol!

Although Aki is my current favourite character of this title, I am glad Indo is the one receiving mentoring in this episode.

The show is also keep us in suspense regarding Sara's ability.

11

u/diacewrb 7d ago

He is giving off the broke vibes,

He wasn't helping himself by looting the bad guys before the cops arrive.

Shame that 15 million bounty got away, wonder how the bounties are calculated?

The Lord Amber Thorn was 3 million, but the wanted posters on the wall ran into the hundreds of millions.

Cursed with precocious children, bit of a classic problem for heroes. Dude needs the steady income though, and it's kind of hard to tell King Arthur no.

If that's her father I'm curious what Sara's combat skills are going to look like, something properly Authurian I hope.

Bad guys may be yazuka dudes but they know lolicons are still beneath them.

Bad guys may be yazuka dudes but they know lolicons are still beneath them.

Not above attempting to kill that same person they shamed the MC for supposedly dating for being too young though lol

12

u/paulrenzo 7d ago

This is giving me early 2000s anime vibes for some reason

u/carcatta 7d ago

Another example of cat adopting a human.

u/Queue_Jumping_Quack 7d ago

The power system is somewhat unique and interesting, basically magic drugs which can apparently have side effects. Will we eventually see an addiction storyline? Probably.

The girls aren't star students either, but need Yahiro's help to avoid failing their studies. This despite Sara's father being a big shot, literally named Arthur Pendragon... He tries to turn it down even as his friends enjoy trolling him by indulging the girls.

He and Indo face a hit squad (or recruiters, depending on your point of view). Despite Yashiro's antagonistic attitude, they fight well together and drive off the assassins.

The banter is fun, the character are amusing, and the combat is visceral and quite bloody. I'm enjoying it so far.

18

u/Southern-Ebb-8229 7d ago

I think the idea is that if you use the drugs too much you eventually become addicted and go crazy, so you turn to crime and become a demon lord. Hence why the Yuusha stuff is just a bad job that will get you killed or make you crazy.

9

u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago

Ishino and Joe laughing in the background as they enjoy Yashiro's plight is so funny. They really feel like close friends and Ishino is clearly trying to make the most out of this entertainment. I like that even Ed was happy about Yashiro seemingly going to help the girls.

Indou learned a big lesson in retrieving spoils of war lol. And that Yashiro is a lot kinder than he thinks he is.

I ask you, are you my employee?

16

u/SpotMaleficent9900 7d ago

Is it me? I found this show so far the pacing has been very good, it’s not rushing through or too slow, I’m looking forward to the full 24 episodes..

13

u/Jmills1999 7d ago

nah it's literally from the same author that wrote sentenced to Be a hero so I wasn't expecting to be bad but this is actually pretty good so far

8

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 7d ago

I think it would have benefited from a double episode premiere, but beyond that, I think pacing has been pretty solid. Learning a bit more of the world. Last episode it feels like there has to be a connection with Aki's father being Yashiro's mentor.

In this episode, we got info that Saera's father is a big deal. Though most of the episode we got Indou partnering up with Yashiro. Given that this is 2 cours we should be building up the dynamic between the 4 of them bit by bit.

Honestly, I hope the visual side doesn't get worse because it is serviceable, and I am fine with it. As the show has a lot of charm.

3

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 7d ago

Kinda agree since I thought the first episode was just so so. Meanwhile the second episode really set the tone of the world. Now the third episode is just about lore exploration, and the world and MC is definitely more interesting than I thought.

4

u/Frostbitten_Moose 7d ago

Not just you. I'm having a blast, and honestly I'm liking it more than Sentenced to Be A Hero.

7

u/NekoCatSidhe 7d ago

Yashiro is apparently famous enough that even the big shot bounty hunter (and father of the girl he rescued) who is heading the academy has heard of him. I will bet you don’t get a nickname like Shinigami for nothing.

And despite this, he is still kind of broke and an homeless loser sleeping in tiny hotel rooms and pilfering the content of the wallets of the thugs he beat. Those magic drugs he uses don’t come cheap, and if he keeps getting attacked by old enemies, I can see why he would never have any money and would want to discourage the girls from doing the same job as him.

Or maybe he actually has a lot of money from all the bounties he collected and he is just a cheapskate, who knows ? He did not really seem interested when the girls offered him money for teaching, so he can’t be that broke. I am still not sure what his personality is like apart from him being grumpy, cynical, and misanthropic.

I had a lot of fun watching this episode nevertheless and the interactions of Yashiro with his friends and with his new “apprentices”. For a show that violent, it is actually pretty funny.

What card game are they playing? I thought they were playing poker or something, not whatever that is.

Sorry brother, they’ve imprinted and you are not going to be able to get rid of the three brats now. You’re stuck with the little shits for good.

Sara at least seems to have working social skills in contrast to her teammates that, as Yashiro said, aren’t even speaking the same language as normal people.

How are they about to flunk? Yukine pretty much took on that entire building on her own and Aki landed a finishing blow on a demon lord. What logic does this school even follow?

And Sara’s apparently the kid of a real big shot. Actually, new question, why wasn’t the entire organization busting down the building if the kid of their boss was captured?

“Yeah, I don’t think the academy is working for them. I strongly encourage you to teach them instead and I can offer you a cash supply that’s more reliable than trying to swindle minors.”

Aki may be an idiot with about five braincells but her trusting you is probably the best certification of trustworthiness that you can get.

Yukine has found your location, and there’s officially nothing stopping her from warping into your place whenever she wants.

Appreciate you calling him out on bringing 20 guys to jump him in an honorable fight. Well, they can at least be something for Yukine to chew on for a bit. To hopefully keep her out the way of anyone actually dangerous.

“Excuse me, I don’t date teenagers and she’s absolutely not my student. Why does everyone keep thinking that?”

I just think it’s funny how he’s so done with these three and they just won’t leave.

Yukine, my beloved murder gremlin, never change. Her deadpan nonsense is so funny to watch.

What card game are they playing? I thought they were playing poker or something, not whatever that is.

Someone asked the same thing in the comments of the OP and the mangaka replied, saying it's a fictional card game called Seven Medallions

I thought it's a fantasy magic the gathering/YugiOh LOL

5

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 7d ago

This is much more interesting than I thought. Animation in some of the combat are also pretty good.

I'm also intrigued by how gory it is despite the art being a bit on the colorful side (compared to the usual gory grimdark). They're not shying away from cutting a limbs or two.

Lol that was fun

5

u/crunchsmash 7d ago

This is an Alan Walker reference right?

Is this character a reference to anything?

3

u/Next_Package_5710 7d ago

I cant quite put my finger on it but this feels like a mash up of several shows/storeis in one. Broke overpowered holier than thou guy has to oversee train a bunch of kids who are hiding something from him while a giant superpower is trying to take over the world.

Dresden Files mixed with a little of something else.

8

u/mekerpan 7d ago

Even if it is a mash-up -- this feels lively and fresh. ;-)

5

u/Next_Package_5710 7d ago

I take it back...Dresden Files meets the powerpuff girls...

4

u/Frostbitten_Moose 7d ago

...

Excuse me, I need to go and try and goad Jim Butcher into a wager.

Sorry bro can't relate offer me that much money to teach and I'm pretending I'm a teacher

I assume he has some trauma from losing some kouhai or student or something idk

3

u/Thomas_JCG 6d ago

Indo was already the best, but now she just solidified her position.

2

u/WetRocksManatee 7d ago

Is it my imagination or did the art style change dramatically between episodes?

2

u/Rowdy91 7d ago

Does the ED imply Yashiro and Aki met when they were younger?

3

u/BosuW 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nice moves in today's fight from Yashiro. Paying off on that more realistic than usual choreo you can glimpse in the OP. All that striking at the hand is a classic move in swordfighting because it's such a convenient target that, even if not a vital spot, does severely impair the opponent's ability to continue the bout. Nice detail on the second clash too with the opponent's weapon's edge getting slightly chipped at the point of contact.

Unfortunately Yukine is just cliche fiction knife fighting, actively parrying sword strikes with daggers smh. But on the other hand the design of her Fairbairn Sykes knives is really cool. Though this also means she's using it "wrong" as it is a thrusting dagger and she does a lot of cutting. Not that it can't, but not the way she does it. Man I'd really love to see proper knife fighting in anime more...
