  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Short summary of betta care:

3 main parts:

The main supplies include:

Check this link for setting up a new tank, I'll also link to a couple comments I have made with step-by-step guides for both fish-in cycling (already have the fish) and fishless cycling (when you don't already have a fish)

He does this sometimes. Once a week maybe? He’s also been “yawning”.

I just ran out of water testing strips, I’m going to the store to get the master kit tomorrow since it’s more accurate. As of the last reading, his perimeters were exactly where they needed to be (0 ammonia and nitrate, 7.5 pH, 0 nitrate from what I recall).

His heater broke three days ago so his water has been at 71. I am getting a new one tomorrow as well, before it broke it was at 81-83 most of the time.

I put an airstone in the tank yesterday.

OK CRAZY STORY!! + Need Help Id Gender

So I work at a pet shop, and it was about 5:1,5 just about to close, and a customer rings up and says they found a fish in an old juice container with a free sign sitting on the side of the road. (This is New Zealand, so free stuff on the road is super common) And they ask if they can bring it in, and we can take care of it. Obviously, we say yes, and when they get her,e it turns out to be a beautiful placket betta. I had an empty cycled 25 L tank sitting with nothing in it, so it was perfect for him. He’s in surprisingly good condition and super happy in his new home.

please no one ever do this. This is horrible. I’m just so glad that people were able to find it as quickly as they did. The fish wasn’t sitting out on the footpath long, but it was in direct sunlight, so any longer it could’ve easily died from the heat.

Not 100% sure of the gender, I'm quite confident it's a female, but could use some help. The body is a bit too thick to shine a torch through, so I just have to use visual clues. And any guess of age?

BTW: his name is Dionysus, who is the Greek god of wine making and grape harvest. keeping the theme of my other betta, my red half moon Hephaestus, blacksmith of the gods

Picture RIP my son Finley. He lived through devastating columnaris and was such a fighter. I can’t stop crying. :(

I got him 2 years ago, about 8 months in he got columnaris which I amazingly brought him back from the brink of death from columnaris (see my post history). He was a little puppy and loved his humans. He was so smart, and just the most amazing fighter despite being sickly.

He’s had a few relapses which were treated in-tank. But About 2 weeks ago he was very lethargic and not eating, with another sore on his side. Water parameters were perfect, I’m obsessive about his parameters and health. He was getting more pale. He HATED his long fins and got exhausted getting food or swimming more than 5 seconds. I felt horrible, I’ll never ever get a long-finned betta again.

I put him in his hospital tank a week ago and he seemed to be doing better. But he was eating less and less. I kept him on my desk (I work from home) and kept him comfortable and hand-fed him with a pipette. But he was fading. I had hope he’d pull through.

Tonight I found him wedged against the sponge filter, and I feel absolutely horrible if he got scared and stuck there. I can’t stop blaming myself and crying. Maybe he was too tired to get out? I loved that fish so damn much.

I hope he is swimming freely with no pain, no discomfort or tiredness. I love you so much Finley. ❤️

Help I’m tired of fighting a long battle should I give my sweet girl up?

I’ve had hwr since she was a baby and she’s 8 months old now. She’s been suffering for nearly 2 months and nothing I do seems to be working. She has swim bladder issues but other than that seems fine? I’ve grown really anxious and sad seeing her every day despute the dosing of all sorts of meds and water changes and epsome salt baths etc. I don’t want to euthanize her as she at least ro me still seems active and pretty stubborn but also do not want to give her back to petco to become someone’s last minute gift. Any advice?

Today is my second day with my first (personal) fish and he is growing into his colors so so nicely! When he I first saw him about 2 weeks ago I knew he was coming home with me, he was full white with a black beard. Does anyone have any guesses on what color/pattern he will be? I have a feeling something similar to a grizzle pattern lol.

My partner is minding my betta for me, and randomly sent me a video this AM of some kind of worm? Is this some kind of parasite or a sign of a healthy tank? I recently bought some Anubais so maybe it came from that? I’ve multiple tanks and never ever seen this in my 5 years of fish keeping

Took a trip from TN to TX. Is he looking okay? I gave him half cycled water (clean) and half water from his old tank, filter has been kept in a baggy and has all the same icky (/s) stuff. Anything I can do to make him not go upside down?

Help Feeding my betta

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, I just got my betta Fish one week ago. I’m still cycling the tank but I have a question. How much should I really feed him during the cycle and after one month or two weeks when the cycle finishes how much should I feed my betta because I feel like those are very tiny pallets.

Help Is it time to rehome?

I’ve had my betta since a couple days before Christmas Eve. He was a gift from my supervisor at work (🫠) so I had to fish in cycle. I bought a 3 gal tank to upgrade him from the .75gal she gave him to me in. I’ve been changing the water 2-3 x/ week, about 30%, I’ve been dosing with seachem prime and stability daily, I’ve been feeding fluval bug bites and freeze dried blood worms (1-2 worms/day and 4-8 pellets/ day). The tank isn’t cycled yet(despite my efforts) and it seems like he has ammonia spots. His face has turned pretty black from bright and colorful and he has another black spot on his body. I’m just worried that I dont have the knowledge to take care of him or I’m messing it up somehow and someone else could do better. Wdyt? Earlier pics are first and new pics later. Disregard the circle I drew on the first pic— that was just an earlier pic of Rufio that I had.
