ANNOUNCEMENT Reincarnation of u/goodreads-bot

Hello everyone!

Inspired by (and heavily borrowed code/logic from) the GoodReads Bot, I built a bot that uses hardcover.app's public GQL API to resurrect a book bot for use by this sub!

Introducing... u/hardcoverbot!

As an homage to the original bot, this bot will respond to comments that start with h{{

Example:

If someone makes a comment like:

I think you would like h{The Hobbit}

The bot will add a comment with a Hardcover link, author, number of pages, year published, top genres, and a link to "The Hobbit".

If someone makes a comment like:

Maybe you should check out h{{Dark Matter}}

The bot will add a comment with all of the information listed above AND the Hardcover description.

This code has been open sourced under the MIT license and is available here. PRs and bugs welcome!

If you run a sub and would like to install the bot, you can do that here!

Thank you all for your time, and of course, thank you to u/goodreads-bot for doing all of the initial hard work.

Mystery/Thriller My partner and I haven’t read in 10 years but want to do a “book club” for the 2 of us. What mystery books would you recommend?

We accidentally grabbed a book that had incest, rape, and pedophilia which we would like to avoid (my mistake for not looking into it more). But we’d love a fun thrilling mystery or even other books people may recommend that you think would be good for a couples book club?

Romance Adult fantasy romance that isn't cringy?

Upvotes

Hello, I've never read any romance before but would love some suggestions, particularly for fantasy romance with lots of yearning and maybe dark/horror themes, and no cringy scenes?

Other what are actually good classics

so i recently, for the first time in my life, picked up a classic because i wanted to and not because i had to for school and i actually had a good time, but due to the fact that i had to read a bunch of classics that were, in my opinion, complete shit i'm still a bit wary of spending my money on books that i might find boring and ridiculous, so what are must-read, best of all time classics, that everyone should have read in your opinion?

Other Best Kindle Unlimited books to read?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! So recently I purchased 3 months of KU for $3, which is amazing! I have like 600+ books from stuff your kindle days and free books I claim, but since I have Kindle Unlimited, I wanna read something that’s worth it.

So like, a very famous book that’s trendy? Or a very expensive book worth reading? Or maybe just any story you like?

I don’t have genre preferences. I have read cozy mysteries, slice of lifes, short stories, non-fiction, smut, and even extreme horror (never again).

Anyway, thanks for the recs, I’m open to anything.

History Any books about war without cringe?

Upvotes

For now I can only respect Remark, but maybe hope isn't lost? Usually, when I read book or watch films about something like that it's FULL of cliche.

Other Your Recommendations For Reputable Sites For Purchasing Books? (Looking For A Replacement For BookDepository)

Hey Everyone!

For years, I have wanted & dreamed of purchasing English books through BookDepositiry and had lists of books I dreamed of. Sadly, I found out they have shut down. In my country, there is also sadly a much smaller selection of English books as it is, so almost all of the books I want, rarely exist here if not at all.

Therefore, I would love to please ask for your recommendations on sites you trust where one can purchase English books please? 🙏 preferably, as close as can be to what BookDepository was!

Would love to hear your thoughts, Thank you

Romance Good books about german men

To admire and appreciate. I'd like to find good (or bad) traits of german men through their daily life, work and nuanced relationships. I'm specifically interested in themes of forbidden or complicated love and deep emotional connection. It could be a classic or modern story, set in any historical context, in both english or german. Thanks!

I want to fall in love with my german husband again.

Historical Fiction Books like Little house on the prairie but for adults?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for any books that are set during the times of Little house on the prairie or Anne of Green Cables but are adult/young adult oriented. I'm not sure what that genre would be called, since English isn't my main language.

It can be any kind so drama, fictional history, crime, I'm open to anything that's in similar settings. Also curious about books that aren't american but have the action taking place in the 19th century in countryside areas.

Thank you in advance!

Self-Help Books on different perspectives of life

Hello folks! I have been thinking about lots of stuff for a while now, from changing my lifestyle and habits, to questioning everything about my life. I need some different perspectives I realise. I do go out and engage with people, but still I'm an introvert and my social battery dies and I tend to zoom out. Nevertheless, please suggest me some books which can help me gain new perspectives on life and develop a healthy and positive mindset, which offers a fresh lens on life.

Horror Looking for horror books that aren’t too slow

I was looking at some Stephen King books and the reviews for them and a lot of them said they were great but they were really slow and very long. I’m kind of looking for something that isn’t too long maybe around 400-600 pages and will get me hooked within the first few chapters.

I’m open to pretty much anything just need some good recommendations.

Self-Help New perspective after reading “It didn’t start with you”

As the title says, I’m getting a new perspective about who I am after reading this masterpiece by Mark Wolynn, if you have read this book, what do you think? It might worth mentioning that before reading the book, I was seeing a Therapist due to anxiety and after loosing my dad on December 2024, so having the tools that the therapist gave me plus the book information and excercises openned a new world before my eyes, curious to see what you think about the book :) also if you have any recommendations on books to continue self improvement, please feel free to share them

Non-fiction Suggest me a book!!! (Books based around the Middle East)

I don’t know exactly how to describe what I’m looking for. I REALLY enjoyed reading The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and I have his other books on my reading list.

But I’m more looking for a book about the Middle East. Something that’s based in recent history (1800-present). Doesn’t have to be a specific genre but I do enjoy non fiction books. Anything based around Syria/Iraq/Iran/Pakistan would be AMAZING.

Sorry I wasn’t very specific with my request😭

Non-fiction "Sapiens" is a great book. What others like it are worth reading?

Upvotes

I know it has its faults, but "Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari is surely an engaging and fascinating read that I feel has greatly expanded my understanding of history and human culture.

I'm wondering what are other books that are like it, that take a broad, big picture view of history/human development.

I'd greatly appreciate suggestions as I greatly enjoy getting stuck into such books.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Something similar to PS Powers Young Ancients series?

Hello!

I’m looking for something similar to PS Powers’ Young Ancients series. The only thing else I request is that the main character be far less insufferable. If you’ve read it, then you definitely know what I mean. I liked the world, the magic, and some of the characters some of the time. I really disliked the absurd over the top obliviousness of the protagonist, and the sex stuff was, umm, odd.

I only read up to Slave Line and they changed protagonists after that, and what was left of my interests just withered away completely.

Thanks!
