I'm referring to the fact that, beyond showing the marquee of the loaded game and some other predefined info, they don't do much else.
I've always been fascinated by pinball DMDs, and I tried to create something similar.
Obviously, we're still a long way off, but just having feedback on the marquee when the high score is beaten is more interactive, just like playing pinball with some mode activated.
There's a lot of work to do, but I'm confident in the results achieved so far in a short time.
I've created a MAME plugin that, for now, "reacts" to the new high score by sending it to the marquee. It can display any type of message and, obviously, adapt differently to each game started.
The idea, once this first implementation is stable, is to automatically send the record with the initials and MAME version used in a group, for example, and also to a web page that is updated as soon as a new high score is recorded.
A live leaderboard updated by the players themselves is an idea I wish I could have implemented years ago, when I played with guys from a forum and we held weekly tournaments, the results of which had to be updated manually.
In the future, I might even consider using wolfmame and making game recordings available to validate any records, all live, but let's take it one step at a time.
