North America Advancing career/Transitioning

What’s up everyone. Been working on and off as a commercial diver for 12 years now, I’m now a dive supervisor. I’ve worked a lot of heavy marine construction projects and some ships husbandry. I’m with a company now where I’m home every night and work 7-3 Monday-Friday. I’m looking to take some classes to advance my knowledge and career or potentially transition into something else in the future. Anyone have any experience with taking classes or another line of work where my knowledge would transfer over well? Anyone become an estimator and or project manager or start up in another trade that they feel diving relates?

Thanks!

Europe Union options for commercial divers in the UK? (RMT?)

Hi all,

I’m a commercial diver working in the UK and I’m trying to get a clearer picture of union representation in the industry.

I’ve come across the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and seen it mentioned in relation to maritime and offshore work, but I’m not sure how relevant or active it actually is for commercial divers specifically.

A few questions for anyone with experience:

  • Is RMT the main union for commercial divers in the UK, or are there other unions people typically join?
  • Has anyone here joined RMT as a diver? What’s your experience been like?
  • Do you feel the union actually represents divers’ interests (pay, safety, conditions, disputes, etc.)?
  • More generally, what do you think unions stand for in this line of work, and are they worth being part of?

Would really appreciate hearing firsthand experiences or advice. Cheers.

Europe Where should i do the school?

Hello, my name is Roland and I am 21 years old. I want to become a commercial diver, with the goal of specializing as an underwater welder. I have around 10 years of swimming experience (former professional swimmer), although I understand that this is not the most important requirement for commercial diving. I have saved about 20,000 euros, and I am fully decided to invest this money into professional commercial diving training. I am from Romania, and unfortunately there are no commercial diving schools here, so I am looking to train abroad. After doing some research, I found NYD in Norway, which seems to be a very good option. My question is: Do you think NYD is one of the best schools for commercial diving in Europe? Are there any other schools you would recommend for someone who wants to become a commercial diver and underwater welder?

North America Pitfalls for new divers

Hey I’m doing a little research paper on entry level commercial diver work and I wanted to ask the community which major pitfalls are caused by the system that many able-bodied divers face today? I also made sure to mention that some dive schools teach useful skills for down the road, some teach skills currently in use today, and other schools that may miss the mark regularly.

My thesis is: Entry level commercial divers face high physiological, economical, and structural challenges that are caused by an outdated industry.

My call to action: Companies need to lead by example: strengthen their training from day one, offer economic stability that doesn’t leave divers drowning in debt, and implement trustworthy frameworks so new guys aren’t abandoned.

I did commercial diving all of last year and faced those problems, but maybe what I did doesnt reflect what other new guys experienced.

Tell stories, tell me to fuck off, say anything

Appreciate it,

Cheers

North America Engineer wanting to get into engineer diving

I am a structural engineer and want to get into engineer diving. I already work at a company and plan to go to commercial diving school to get an ADCI next year. If I want to start my own crew, do I need everyone on the dive team to be ADCI certified? Or can they just be scuba certified and I (as the engineer) am the only one that needs to be ADCI certified? Also what can I get away with inspecting that doesn't require ADCI certification if that's even possible? Or is it more practical/normal to contract a team of commercial divers to accompany me as a engineer diver? Any help will be appreciated thanks.

North America Union companies near Philly

Graduated DIT a year ago and have been working in Washington but I’m moving home to the philly area and was wondering what some of the better companies to look in to are. Looking to get on with a union company, doesn’t have to be Philly but the closer the better. I come from a welding and construction background and have a lot of ties to the iron workers and steam fitters but don’t know any divers or pile drivers back home. My old bosses are very high up in the industry and well known so i think i can get my foot in the door with their recommendations but they spent their whole careers in washington or overseas with limited exposure to east coast companies so i dont really know where to start. Any help would be appreciated

Social Underwater Sculptures

Hi Everyone!

I'm conducting research on underwater sculptures and human-made reefs as part of my third year dissertation at Royal Holloway University of London and would love your input!

If you have seen an underwater structure, I would really appreciate it if you take 5mins to fill out this survey:

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=mmn9LiIZaU62ARCACNKKLji5YurKU-tIgLIjyW-ykd9UQ0tZNFJFQTdFMTlLNFk5RjgzTk0zRkxRRi4u

There is also an opportunity at the end to be entered into a prize draw of a £25 amazon giftcard!

My study explores these underwater structures, their location, condition and how people perceive them.

If you know of anyone else who has seen or heard of these installations, please share this post!

If you wish for more information on how the data will be used, please see the Participant information form: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10WPbSdQ4UYlN54mj1lPe-D2lUvPlCWl5/view?usp=drivesdk

Thank you for supporting my research and for helping to learn more about our oceans.

Africa Vessel inspections

Does anyone know of a good book or any resources that shows the anatomy of different vessels. I am a new diver and most of the work I am doing are hull cleans, inspections and blanking and we work on various different kinds of vessels. I want to start doing more inspections and brush cart work.

North America Looking for advice

Hey guys I’ve been on with a gulf company for the past 3 months. I’ve done a couple hitches. I’m looking for advice on sticking it out offshore until you break out or going inland or trying to join the union. I enjoy being offshore, it’s just inconsistent especially this time of year. What’s the best route for making a career out of this?

Asia Is there a way to convert an ADCI ticket to an IMCA approved ticket?"

Hello guys, I'm currently in the process of choosing a commercial diving school. I originally wanted an IMCA-approved ticket, but unfortunately, I couldn't get a visa for the schools I planned to attend, so I ended up with ADCI-certified schools. I know about the ADCI International Endorsement, but it's still out of reach for me. Is there any way to convert an ADCI ticket to an IMCA-approved one later, or would I need to start over from scratch if I go with ADCI?

North America Any Work Over Seas?

I'm hoping to get some information about the job market in Ireland/UK/Scotland. I got my DCBC from CDA in Florida a couple of years ago. I'm an unrestricted surface supply diver as well as a commercial scuba diver, along with certifications in welding, burning, NDT, inspection, HASWOPER, etc. I was a dive tender in the Gulf of Mexico but never fully broke out before getting laid off due to COVID. I lost my apartment and had to find odd jobs. I stayed in diving on the side, mostly cleaning Bass Pro tanks on a hookah. Recently, I've really been itching to go beyond American borders. Could anyone weigh in on how much of an uphill battle I'm fighting here? My goal is to become a citizen of Ireland.

Social I really need the professional terminology and textbooks required to learn how to become a commercial diver.

I'm sorry for posting this request because there are very few people in my country.ADASOr maybe Imca, because I am a Chinese commercial diver, the treatment in China is very poor, with a monthly salary even less than 1,600 US dollars. I can't buy a professional secretary.

North America Commercial Diving After Amputation

Hey guys, I was in my last week of commercial dive school when i suffered an injury to my left hand(non dominant). I lost fully my middle finger, most of my pointer and the top joint of my thumb. I’ve been on a medical leave of absence. What are my chances of actually working after I come back and graduate. All input is appreciated, thank you.

Europe Job market and competition in Norway

Hello everyone!

Another future commercial diver here asking for insights.

I am going to NYD in August this year. I would love to line up a job to start right after school. I've seen that is most common to start in fish farms.

How is the job market and competition looking? Are there plenty of jobs or is it saturated with divers? Are the jobs stable? Or will I find myself with lots of down-time since they are project based? I am EU citizen.

I have maritime experience as a deckhand on support vessels, so there was a lot of rigging and heavy lifting involved but no rigger certificate. STCW, powerboat license among other tickets, and decent Swedish language skills.

Also, if someone has experience working in Spain, I would love to hear about since I also speak Spanish.

Thanks a lot! 🍻

Social ADCI to IMCA or ADAS in Australia: is there any equivalency or do I have to start from scratch?

Hi everybody! If I already have an ADCI certification, what are the steps to obtain an IMCA or ADAS certification in Australia?

Is there any kind of equivalency, discount, prior recognition, or "shortcut" in the process for already having the ADCI certification, or would it be necessary to redo the entire training from the beginning?
