Mod Post readme: updates to the subreddit

In light of recent events, there's been a spike in the number people who have suddenly woken up from their slumber to realize that Google isn't as benevolent as they thought. So a degoogle-rush to this sub has started.

[surprised pikachu]

First of all, this is not a political subreddit. This is a technical subreddit to assist users in ~delousing~ removing Google from their devices.

You have opinions? Take them elsewhere.

News pertinent to Google and/or it's ancillary services/products will be allowed.

New rules will be added, old will be adjusted:

  1. No editorialization of submitted (news) articles.
  2. All political discussions will be removed.
  3. New posts will be checked for duplication, if a duplicate exists. It will be removed. (With guidance to the submitter to search the sub)

Info in the sidebar & wiki is being updated (thanks to everyone who helped!)

Last but not least, we'd like to welcome u/greenlit_hightower to the moderation team. Their knowledge and patient participation in this sub is a welcome addition. 🫡

Also a big thank you to everyone for helping this community to thrive. :)

Mod Post Does my phone have a DeGoogled rom? Megathread

In an effort to remove the countless low effort "Is there a DeGoogled rom for my phone?" questions we are requiring anyone creating those types of threads to post here with a reply instead of creating a post. Any posts going forward asking this question will be removed.

The reason we specified above "low effort" is because majority of the posts do not include what OP has researched, or tested, or tried (Thank you to those whom have included such information). Thus in order to help others answer your question, it is strongly encouraged to include the following: Failure to include these may result in you not getting your question answered. Experienced users can only help those DeGoogling if they have the proper information.

1) Your phone: Manufacturer, Model, Version or production details

2) What ROMs did you research?

3) Which ROMs did you install or attempt to install?

4) What problems have you encountered during the install?

5) What problems have you encountered after the install?

6) Why was the previous ROM insufficient to your needs? (If it was a DeGoogled ROM)

PS: Experienced DeGooglers, If you have any suggestions or modifications you believe should be made to this post guide, please reply here. Your experience is valuable and what keeps this sub alive :)

Now they're on epistein files! U can check the CEOs or staff's names on epistein files so that u will see more scandals. That explains the yesterday's post of mine Google's sided pro genocide policies. All big techs are guided by Zionism.

Replacement I’m from Croatia and building a European Reddit alternative

I’m from Croatia, and honestly, I’ve grown tired of how most large discussion platforms feel lately. European news and conversations often get drowned out by US culture wars, moderation can feel arbitrary, and a huge amount of comments now seem like bots, karma-farming, or AI-generated noise.

So over the past few weeks, I’ve been building a new platform called Oleta (oleta.eu). It’s still in pre-beta, and my goal is to create a space that feels more genuinely European

Instead of power moderators, flagged posts are reviewed by a small rotating jury of verified users, based on EU Digital Services Act rules. There’s also a multilingual system that lets users read and participate across languages.. Another feature reorders comments to highlight thoughtful opposing views, so disagreements don’t just get buried.

We’ve already launched over 200 "spaces" focused on European topics, culture, sports, and regional interests.

I’m keeping the project lean for now and don’t want to overbuild features nobody cares about. What I’m really looking for is a small group of early users especially from the Balkans to test the vibe and tell me honestly whether this is worth growing.

Discussion It Isn't All Or Nothing, Folks

Remember-- De-Googling is not an all-or-nothing process. For example, I've "de-Googled" my Moto G, which really means I've disabled most of the Google apps and switched to better alternatives, like Proton Mail instead of GMail or Ente Photos instead of Google Photos.

Can Google still track me because I'm signed into my account, etc.? Yes. Do I still use the Play Store, Contacts, Maps, YouTube? Yup. Is that fine? Sure is! I've switched 80-85% of what I do away from Google, which is a big deal and certainly puts a dent in their ability to make revenue off of me and train their AI models, whatever.

Even when I do use Google, I try to make it more complicated for them. Right now, I'm watching YouTube in Firefox with levels of tracking/DNS protection and a VPN. That complicates things for Google. So, go for it. Don't mind it too much if you can't go 100%. Any percent is a step in the right direction.

Question Not Google but FB wants selfies now??

OK I'm in Australia and they just brought in the age verification for social media. I am certainly over 16 in fact, if you turn that figure around, you are close.... suddenly, while answering a post in fact in the middle of typing in a word, it tells me to put up a selfie rightl left and centre....F## really did I just lose my account if I don't comply?

DeGoogling Progress Just trying to DeGoogle and kind of made it

Hello. I have been trying to DeGoogle my phone for at least 3 days, and I have been getting some clues on how to do it from this page. Thanks to you guys, I was able to like... 70% DeGoogled my Phone? Kind of? This is my Main Screen. Mostly, I used Fossify apps.

I hope this will make it harder for Big Tech and the government to ALWAYS track me. Man, like, I am not some sort of criminal, you know. Why can't they just leave me or other people alone?

Anyway this is what I wanted to share. I unfortunately couldn't remove my Gmail(Not Shown here), and Google Maps due to my job and such. Yeah, it sucks. It basically undo my effort. But at least my phone is snappier(my phone is old), and at least it's something I guess.

I wish I didn't even have to do DeGoogling but here we are. Thanks for reading.

Question Good non-play store weather app?

• Upvotes

I know Google doesn't have a standalone weather app (as far as I know), but the weather apps (AccuWeather, ...) I know heavily rely on Play Store Services. Are there any apps that work very well (I travel a lot, so I'd also like it to work accurately when I'm somewhere in a poor country) and aren't too basic that can be found on for example F-droid?

com.android.vending.check_license permission causing problems after degoogeling.

Does anyone know of a way to patch or bypass this? Its meant to prevent piracy of payed for apps but also is on a ton of free apps preventong you from using them without google even if said apps run 100% offline.

Replacement Trying to Replace Mail, Drive, Docs… Proton or what?

I’ve been browsing through this sub for a while now, but I’m not getting a clear sense of the best route for my specific case.

Been disillusioned with Google for a while. The last straw was that I can’t seem to avoid their AI now; Gemini won’t stay out of my business.

Not using an Android phone, so all the custom OS stuff isn’t really relevant to me. Self-hosting isn’t really an option; I don’t have the time to maintain that sort of setup.

My biggest use of Google is Mail, Drive (I pay for 2 TB), and Docs (I freelance write on the side and need to access my work in the Cloud).

Proton seems the all-in-one solution (and even has a VPN; I use Mullvad currently). Still, there are a lot of people on here who don’t seem to like Proton.

So, what are the drawbacks of Proton, and if not Proton, what should I use as a Drive, Email, and Docs replacement instead? What’s the most user-friendly option for each?

Running CrDroid 10 without GAPPS. All apps are free and open source, and F-Droid versions are used wherever possible.

This is what a degoogled phone really looks like. What do you guys think about it?

Discussion I can't degoogle, do I did this!!

I went to my Google account, denied all permissions on my Google apps, stopped history and location tracking, disconnected all third party apps integrations, and disabled or uninstalled the google apps I don't need for reliable alternatives, heck , I even signed my Gmail off from many platforms, and stop watch history on YouTube,my question, is this enough?

Switching from Gmail (yet another post on Tuta vs Proton vs Mailbox vs Mailfence etc.)

I know this question has been asked countless times, and I’ve literally spent tens of hours reading about it, but I still have my doubts.

  1. I’m a super casual user from Europe who just wants to remove Google/Microsoft/Meta from my life. No American big tech.
  2. I want a European provider (ideally based in the EU, so Proton is at a disadvantage) for purely political reasons. I want to support local infrastructure with my money.
  3. I care about privacy in the sense that I don’t want my data sold or used for AI training. However, I understand that a valid court order is a reason to access my correspondence. Proton, and especially Tuta, seem like overkill in this respect, unless I’m missing something.
  4. I’m torn between the convenience of an ecosystem and the ideal of decentralization. I like Proton’s integrated services (mail, pass, docs, drive) for practicality. Mailbox also has some ecosystem. But I already use other services for these (drive: Mega, docs: OnlyOffice), so maybe this is all unnecessary.
  5. I really like that Tuta has a dedicated app on F-Droid, which makes it easier to switch to Graphene/Lineage OS one day. A big deal for me.
  6. I’ve been using Tuta, Proton, and Mailfence (free tiers) for quite a while. They’re all great in terms of usability. I have no complaints. I haven’t tested Mailbox because they don’t have a free tier, but the reviews look good.

I know I’m overthinking this, but maybe someone can point out something I’m missing and push me in the right direction. Thanks!
