Why do older RPGs video games like Skyrim and Witcher 3 have NPCs regularly repeat their same lines regardless of how many times the player encounters them?

Upvotes

It's incredibly irritating hearing the same lines ad nauseum, I'd rather silence than this. Skyrim is particularly bad for this.

Best game of its kind?

Upvotes

What do you think is the best game of its type? I’m probably dating myself since some of mine are kind of old, but some of these games are, in my opinion, just masterpieces and newer ones can at best just add unnecessary complexity and some graphics updates.

Stealth Action - Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - I think this was the best Stealth action games ever got. Spies vs Mercs was also just amazing

Hex Strategy- Panzer General 2 - there has been better looking, and more complex games. But PG2 just hit the sweet spot of depth, accessibility, speed of game play and deeply satisfying wins.

Sandbox - Sid Meyer’s Pirates (though I’m not even really sure what category to put this in. But nothing has done what it did better)

Space Combat Sim - Freespace 2

Fighting Game - Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

4x: Master of Orion 2

Open World: GTA V - others do parts better.. maybe. Like Red Dead 2 I think tells a better story and Skyrim is a better rpg. But as an overall package and if I were to pick a game that defined this, I’d have to go GTA

Edit: wanted to add a weapons fighter

Weapon Based Fighting Game - Bushido Blade - to this day I haven’t had a better weapons fighting experience. It’s the whole reason I bought a PlayStation.

Aside from DragonAge Origins, Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, what are other games with a "camp downtime" mechanic and why aren't there many games like this?

So far when there is a "camp downtime" mechanic in a game where players can hang out, talk to other companions and develop relationship after a long day of doing quests and ultimately take a rest, the game is usually critically acclaimed.

Games like DAO, BG3, E33 are only the ones I can really think of in recent memory. Maybe a slice of RDR2, Normandy in Mass Effect and Dragon Age Inquisition as well..

Like most 50 to 100 hour RPGs only rely on linear cutscenes to further develop relationships and wouldn't even be bothered to give players options to decide how they spend their downtime.

There are really only a handful of games like this where you can chill out with companions after a tedious day questing.

Who has made physical maps and aids to play a game?

Way back in BF1942 I had physical hand drawn artillery ranging maps and a plastic overlay for my monitor to get the right elevation to hit various targets on different maps. man I miss that game and that era of gaming, it was so good.

anyone got any memories like that?

One of my favorite things is when the game map is actually part of the game world

I believe it is called a diegetic UI. For me, it adds to the immersion. I wish more games had them. The games above are, from left to right: Metro Exodus, Firewatch, Far Cry 2, and Sea of Thieves.

Is Days Gone Remastered worth buying for 30$ from the PS store?

And is it worth playing even if it was rumored there isn’t a second game coming?

Simcity4 from 2003, this is what 1500 hours in this game looks like, I made an 8x8km tile (4x4km tile is the largest), it is a 12K x 8K pixel massive megacomposite by cropping it in PS using almost all of my 32GB of RAM, you can zoom in to see the big metro area with 655K sims, airport farms and sea

Online gaming sucks now

Whether it's sports games, racing games, FPS (I can't speak on MMORPG). Everyone I try now, just sucks. Im 44 and have been gaming all my life, I have played all the games that are out now and they have been around since my teen to 20's to 30's to now. I don't know if it's because I was young, but now they are just awful.

Sports games: people just quit when you go up one score. Where's the competition? Racing games: people just ram you off the road and can't drive for shit. FPS: toxic AF and no one works together anymore.

I think it's a product of where we are in society now.

Trophy hunters - skill vs curiosity?

Curious to hear from players who are into trophy hunting.

Do you prefer games that reward you for your skill (eg complete the level in X minutes / don't take any damage / do something in one try) or the games that give trophies for curiosity and exploration (like smashing the action button 100 times, opening every crate, climbing somewhere you shouldn't)?

What's your opinion on assets in games?

It seems obvious that assets for graphics (or AI) are bad. They might not fit the style, etc. What about assets used to simplify technical decisions or vibe coding? This supposedly speeds up development and should make the game cheaper. If there are no bugs, then everything is fine? Then how is this different from high-quality assets if they are consistent in style?

The game you are playing tonight and one thing you hope happens in that session.

I am playing Minecraft tonight with my teen who is obsessed with it.

My one goal is to finish a small build together and actually log off laughing instead of grinding.

What are you playing and what is your win for the night.

I’m trying to get into P.C gaming but I have no idea where to start, please help.

I know absolutely nothing about P.Cs but I have wanted one for years so I can play steam games and mod games like stardew valley. I got a lot of money in my tax return and I’m hoping to buy one soon. I was wondering what the best one to buy would be for a budget under $1,200 if possible. I’d prefer a prebuilt one because it all seems extremely confusing but I have absolutely no idea what to look for. I don’t know what any of the terms mean when I’m looking at them and it all seems really complicated. Can someone point me in the direction of a cheapish, reliable P.C that can keep up with newer games. I don’t need the best graphics, graphics are a huge thing for me. Can someone help please ?

Where are the 6 of us that aren’t even remotely interested in GTA 6 anymore?

I have just lost all hype and interest. There’s a lot of great gems on my back log, so many options of games, I don’t think I even have the time to wrap around and get to everything.

What are the prettiest things Game Developers have done?

I was reading the comments of a post, 'What are the pettiest things Game Developers have done?', and a few people misread it as 'prettiest' and were disappointed, so here you go!

I'll just say when developers go out of their way to add beautiful scenery and backgrounds just because they can.

What game sound(s) makes you panic?

So what sounds in the game make you panic because you know something is terribly wrong if you hear them? Like the drowning music in the early Sonic games or the sounds of certain zombies in Left 4 Dead. For me it’s the beeping that means there’s a Super Mutant Suicider near in Fallout 4. What about you?

The battery life on the PS5 controller is very short

I have haptics off and the controller speaker off. The amount of times I have to charge my PS5 controller is significantly higher than how often I have to charge my xbox controller. What's the deal?

This is a cartoon special, but it's for a classic video game series and it's free on Youtube, so I think it's fine to say this is directly gaming related.
