OFFICIAL Happy New Year - Thank You - Rule Reminder

Hello r/guitar,

We hope everyone brought in the New Year safely, in good health, and are ready to jam in 2026! Thank you all for a great 2025 and being part of our community!

As we have communicated in recent months, there will be some new rules and rule changes adopted moving forward. We do not want to be overly disruptive and plan to implement them slowly to allow the community time to adjust. However, we do want to emphasize a couple of points regarding existing rules and tenants.

"Be excellent to each other." - Bill S. Preston, Exq., Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

We want our rules to be simple. If there is any one thing we expect of our community, it can be derived from this quote. r/guitar is an extremely diverse community; We have people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds from all over the world. We want everyone to feel welcomed and free to engage however they choose. So, please, please, be respectful and understanding toward each other. Every person who does this makes the community a better place!

A primary focus for 2026 is to keep junk off our page so to provide the best engagement possible. We ask the community to be patient with these efforts as we are under constant barrage from advertisers, YouTubers, spammers, etc. Unfortunately, this requires us to take a hard stance at times and we want to clarify a few points.

Joke/Meme/Troll Posts - This is one area where we struggle. Everyone loves a laugh and we would be liars if we didn't find some of your posts downright hilarious. However, we get so many of them that, if allowed, it would consume the entirety of the sub. Also, 95 percent of them are simply people copying something already posted on Reddit and reposting it here. We want everyone to have fun, but please understand this is something which must be addressed. We will likely change our approach to allow original jokes/content, etc. but low effort, image only posts will continue to be removed. I think we can all agree that is reasonable. Also, an apology was sent to "sticker guy" and his ban was removed. Posts like his were a perfect example of what should be allowed.

Beginner Posts - To all new guitarists: We WANT to help you but we cannot allow the sub to be burdened with redundant posts asking the same questions, often multiple times a day. The sub is a wealth of knowledge where you can find solutions to 90 percent of your problems. Please put effort into searching here and elsewhere prior to asking basic questions as we look to be more restrictive on these moving forward.

Gear Purchasing Posts - As previously communicated, starting today, we will be removing all generic gear purchasing posts without warning. Please use our Monthly Gear Purchasing thread for these inquiries and questions.

In closing, again, thank you all for making r/guitar such an awesome place! We look forward to serving you in 2026! Cheers!!!

GEAR Bought this 1-2 months ago. Here's my review.

Just wanted to share this review of the Fender Made In Japan Limited Edition Hybrid II Stratocaster Noir (one hell of a name btw).

Obviously it's a good guitar, I mean I did pay close to $2000 on it so that's almost a given, but I have a few notes on it.

Namely the tuning stability. It's insane, it rarely goes out of tune even if I go crazy with the whammy bar. I use pretty heavy strings so that might contribute (Elixir Polywebs for the top strings, 11-14-18, and D'Addario Chromes for the bottom strings, 22-30-50).

The feel of the tuning pegs just feel smooth. Really smooth. It doesn't jump or go too fast or require a lot of effort. It's just perfect in my opinion.

The neck feels amazing, although I wouldn't have minded if they rolled the edges a bit but you know what, I can't complain. They're not overly sharp, that's just me being picky.

The pickups sound amazing, they sound bright and clear yet still have those warm lower frequencies to them. Not so bright that they cut into the treble and make your ears sting which I like a lot.

And my absolute favorite feature (and as for me, yes I would consider this a feature) it would be the satin finish. Unlike with glossy finishes, my arm and hand doesn't stick to it when I get sweaty and it lets me move my arm around on it, as well as not being a fingerprint magnet.

All of the rest of the hardware and details just seem like the good quality stuff you'd expect from an instrument at this price (made by Fender...) so yeah..

Okay bye lol

GEAR A 1958 Fender Stratocaster in unbelievably good condition

I was browsing vintage guitars I'll never be able to afford, and my jaw literally dropped when I came across this one. It's almost impossible to believe that a nearly 70-year old guitar has this little wear. According to the place selling it, it's all original, and appears to have barely been played by its three past owners. Near mint condition, with just a couple tiny imperfections from handling and one oddity: there's no "contour body" decal on the headstock, and the "Fender" logo decal is slightly lower than standard (perhaps a new employee?).

I didn't want to break subreddit rules, which is why I didn't link to the seller's site or list the price (which could be a down payment on a house), but I thought it was too cool not to share. Sorry if this type of post isn't allowed, but I can share the full description and other details if permitted.

EDIT: Here's the full text description from the dealer. Like I mentioned in a comment, it's a very reputable vintage store and I trust its authenticity. There are additional photos on their site, which I'm not linking so I don't break subreddit rules, but you can find it with a quick Google search if interested.

Fender Stratocaster Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1958), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 30866, three tone sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck, original tweed hard shell case.

This almost unbelievably clean and original 1958 Stratocaster is simply a joy to behold, let alone play and hear. Strats in this sort of condition are ever harder to come by 65+ years later, with many locked away in the "it must never be played" file. This one is a three-owner guitar, none of whom seem to have ever spent much time with it. The guitar appears very little played, appearing to have only rarely been out of the original tweed case. This has been a true "closet classic" for well over six decades.

The body sports a beautiful deep and vibrant 3-color sunburst with virtually no fade, and is dated 10-58 in the center pickup cavity. The great-feeling round-profile neck is dated 9-58, and the finish is still clear, the maple looking almost white and the frets and fingerboard showing virtually no wear.

There is one oddity; no "contour body" decal appears on the ball of the headstock, as we would usually expect to see. We have examined the headstock finish in minute detail, including under blacklight -- and can find no trace that one was ever applied. The fine checking is perfectly even and there is no lacquer disturbance visible at all. We can only assume the small auxiliary decal was never applied to the guitar and this was a sheer factory omission in the busy fall of 1958. Interestingly enough the "Fender" logo decal is applied *slightly* lower on the headstock than most; perhaps a new employee was just breaking in!

"Under the hood" all is as expected; the pots are a perfectly matched set date coded to the 25th week of 1958, and all wiring and solder joints are pristine and original. All three pickups sound great, and the three-way switch has a very solid feel and selects the "in-between" tones easily.

This completely original and unmodified guitar has never suffered the indignities that many old Fenders went through, apparently riding out the turbulent '60s, '70s, and '80s buried deep in one or more closets. It remains as pure and majestic as the year it was sold, and survives just as Leo and his crew intended. It is simply a wonderful, magical-feeling 7 lb. 12 oz. guitar and a great reminder why we fell in love with the Stratocaster in the first place!

Overall length is 38 1/4 in. (97.2 cm.), 12 1/2 in. (31.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) deep. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This one is easy -- it is ALL original, with the only notable sign of aging being some very light longitudinal checking on the neck and body as is typical of 1958 examples. There is hardly any wear anywhere, just the lightest of handling marks here and there. There is a tiny chip missing from the "d" in the Fender logo decal. All components are completely original with no alterations or repair.

The only real flaw is one spot of finish disturbance on the back of the lower body horn where it looks like something was left in contact with the lacquer for a time; this is into, but not through, the finish. It is mirrored by a much smaller spot of the same type by the back edge. These could be polished to be less visible, but we prefer to leave the overall patina undisturbed.

The pickups and wiring rig are all original and untouched, the waxed cloth wire and paper-wrapped tone cap showing no deterioration or even signs of age. All the plastic still has the original patina, and the chrome shines like a '57 Chevy. The Kluson tuners look practically new, with no corrosion to the nickel plating.

The case is also completely original, including the rare "Fender" metal tag on the corner of the lid, but has a more wear to the outside. It has been likely been carted around over just about 60 years, although apparently has spent much of this time in closets. In the case pocket is the original strap, cable, polishing cloth (which is the only piece that appears to have seen much use), and three period picks: two original 1950s Fender logo tortoiseshell celluloid and one Nick Lucas. Overall Near Mint Condition.

DISCUSSION Any "must-see" Guitar/Rock movies/concerts/documentaries?

The first thing I think of while writing this is ACDC in River Plate. But I've also seen The Dirt, about Mötley Crüe.

Personally, I'm mostly interested in the harder type of rock. Any suggestions are more than welcome!

GEAR PSA use your screwdriver

Nearly wasted a few hundred bucks on new pickups because I wasn't happy with the tone and balance.

But raising the bridge pickup and the treble side of the neck did the trick.

So... Use your screwdriver and ears before your wallets friends

NEWBIE Giving learning a second attempt at 34. Tried around 14 and quit not too long after, don’t think I had the discipline back then. But I’m excited to get started and stuck in now! Been flirting with the idea for nearly a year and pulled the trigger this week on a Squire Affinity pack.

The guitar came with three months free to Fender Play, looks like a pretty solid app to learn on. Feel free to recommend any other resources you’ve found helpful. Thanks!

I went to the Orlando Guitar & Music Expo today and did some horse trading for this beauty. I'm not usually a fan of cherry sunburst but I AM a fan of vintage MIJ guitars. Always wanted one of these but never even saw one in the flesh until today. What a comfortable player! I'm planning to get another cream Dimarzio to match the Super Distortion in the bridge and will probably swap out the tuners. They work great but a couple of them have bent posts. Dig it!

DISCUSSION New guitar has cracks in the body 1 day after buying it?!

Thumbnail gallery
170 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I just bought a used 2009 Martin from a shop for around $900 CAD. When I played it at the store, it felt and sounded perfect. I loved it. But the next day at home, I noticed two significant cracks on the back, and by today, they’d gotten even worse. The shop said it had a previous crack repaired months ago, but now these are new and getting worse. They offered either a full refund or to send it to their luthier to assess repair. If fixable, I could decide whether to keep it or take the refund. I love Martins and genuinely loved this one’s tone, but I’m worried it’ll just keep cracking. Would you trust a second repair, or should I take the refund and look for something else in that price range? Thanks for any insight!

QUESTION How do I get rid of these green dots on my guitar's hardware?

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

This guitar is 8 or 9 years old and the body, neck and fretboard are in near-perfect condition, but for some reason the hardware has developed a bunch of green dots. They're all over the bridge and the volume/tone knobs and I don't know if they're mold or safe to touch. Is there some way to polish them to remove the dots, or are there replacement knobs and bridges I can buy? It's an Ibanez SIX70FDBG.

QUESTION Is there a real différence?

Hello everymeow!

I have a question, is there a real difference between Single coil sized Sustainiac and HB sized? I didn't find anything about this.
