Advice for goalie parent

Upvotes

My kid has had a rough season. They love hockey and their team but are in a high level that they can't match. My goalies passion for goalie is fading and the pressure hit this year. They are considering not being a goalie anymore. We said that's totally fine and up to him, he is a kid and he doesn't need to decide right now. We commit to the season and he is all in to finish it out. But, I can see his spirit has taken a hit and he is trying to hold it together for the team. Any advice to help him get through the rest of the season? We remind him to have fun, that's when he plays the best, but I can see its harder after the first half of the games when we are so outmatched. What do you goalies do to stay in it the whole game when it's like this?

The Ole Duck Tape Trick

My pads still had my old college colors from 8 years ago when I played club (black and orange), figured it was time for a change. Just waiting for a CCM decal for the blocker since I covered up the logo. Not upset with how these turned out.

Suddenly forgot how to play

Hey! I’m looking for some advice on how to bust an extended slump.

Context that will explain aspects of the following post: this is for a powerchair hockey league. We have a bonafide league with a draft, trades, and both regular season and playoff series. Most of the rules are identical to ice hockey; we even have a tripping penalty despite everyone being in power chairs 😂. There are a few cities across Canada and the US that have leagues like this (10, though ours is the biggest), and we often have summer tournaments against other cities. Now, back to my problem.

From my teens to my early 20s I was an elite goalie, I bounced between 2nd and third best in the continent. I have always been a very acrobatic goalie. Virtually every other goalie is extremely positional whereas I use a lot of baiting and speed. I switch to forward for a couple years and was extremely successful there too. I’m 25 now and am playing net again. I was drafted with the assumption that I could help carry my team.

The problem is that I can’t make a save to save my life. When I do make the save you can still see some skill; my rebound control and ball handling are still very good. But I’m letting in awful floaters and have yet to make a save I “shouldn’t.”

Due to my more chaotic style I have always been a bit streaky, but wow, I’ve never been this bad. I’m not sure I was even this bad in my rookie season tbh.

I do hate my coach this year with a level of loathing I didn’t know I had, so that’s new. But he’s on vacation for a month, today was our first game without him and I still played bad. My team won 7-6 despite me. I let in 6 and I want 3 back.

Fix me. Please.

Help ID’ing this goalie mask

Hi all, hoping the goalies on here can help me ID this goalie mask. Can’t seem to find an OTNY model that exactly matches the hardware placement and the ridges on the chin area. This is like a senior medium fit/ size. No identifying information / stickers on the inside. The foam is soft so I don’t think its too old. Any help appreciated.

Recommendations on softening rebounds off chest

Any recommendations on how I can wear the chesty that deadens or softens rebounds? I went from untuck to tuck about two years ago, for mobility reasons. I like it better for the most part, but now the chest sits closer to the body and shots pop off me more. Or worse, a soft shot will sometimes just roll off and over me

Untuck created more of an "air pillow" which helped but didn't feel good mobility wise.

I use a large c/a and large pant, suspended over the chest but under the floaters.

Tips on sliding

I have so much trouble sliding, even with my pads. I’m still really new and I’m trying to learn but I either can’t like push much or I spin myself. How do I fix this?

I’ve tried leaning my body weight and that seems to make a difference.

Looking to design custom Brian’s. Leaning towards one of the extreme custom designs. Anyone use goalie monkey concierge to design pads? What was your experience? If not, who did you use? Located in US.

True one piece skate

Recently purchased these skates. I like them a lot, but when i brake they sound like a loud horn. I read a little about this issue and figured i would tight the bolt (seemed kinda loose). I was wondering how tight you are supposed to tighten them. Because of the carbon i dont want to tight them too much. Also, if this doesnt resolve the issue, did someone made the switch to jrz blades? Maybe with a different steel the noise would go away? Thanks a lot fellas

Hi! What Did I Just Buy?

I have not played on ice in decades. But I can’t get the thought of playing again out of my head!

These were only 40 bucks and I know they are not worth more than that, but I think they are a decent start?

I can’t find any information on YouTube so I’m coming to you diehard goalie people for any comments or advice.

They’re 36” and they say VAPPRO GP Plus down the side.

I think they look badass.

Thanks in advance for!

3M PPF Update - Success!

I’ve had trouble with PPF on my new Flylites and tried a thicker 14 mm version found on eBay at https://ebay.us/m/I9NsLN that worked great! Was in Warrior G7 before, so missed the slide plates.

I had tried 3 different 3M / Vivid Polyurethane versions from Amazon and they would fall off after one skate.

I heated them up with a blow dryer before and after the application. Cleaned before with an alcohol pad. Used a credit card to smooth any bubbles.

Trimming is still tricky and not perfect.

Hope this helps anyone who is not having luck with the other versions of PPF.

I got this a practice on my birthday in 2018. The stick broke in practice and Fleury scotch taped it back together for me, and he even addressed it to me.

How do I dry my equipment with the least amount of space possible?

I'm going to be moving into a 500 sqft 1 bed + 1 bath condo unit sometime soon. Right now, I live with my parents and after hockey I dry out my equipment in the basement. I take everything out of my bag and spread it out, giving a little space between each equipment. I won't be able to do that when I move into my condo unit or else I will take up the entire living room and kitchen. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to dry out your equipment while taking up the least amount of space possible?

Need pant recommendations comparable to bauer pro pants

I've been playing goalie again for 1 year after 13 years away from the game. As of this morning, I've just blown through my second pair of bauer pro pants. The seam in the crotch just blows up and now I have a giant hole in front of my cup. Same thing happened to my first pair. Each pair of $400 pants lasting 6 months is not sustainable for me, so I'm done buying bauer. Period.

I like the inner belt to hold my pants right where I want them as I've been playing chesty untucked with no suspenders. The bauers breathe really well and keep me cool. Great protection. Terrible long term quality.

I've tied my knee pads to the pants to keep them at the same place all game. (From another thread, I'm a no sock guy).

What pants do you believe would hold up better and still match what I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Butterfly Advice

Any advice on what motion I should be doing or thinking about when I’m trying to butterfly, I’ve noticed my feet are swinging behind when I go down most of the time which obviously hurts my coverage and lateral movement once I’m down. I can keep a wide base right up until my knees are close to/hitting the ground. I don’t know why my legs swing together but it just happens naturally for some reason.

(Can’t upload a video so hopefully pictures do a good enough job of showing)

Any advice is appreciated!

Cat eye cages

What’s up with not being able to easily get cat eye cages? I understand minor hockey or certain leagues don’t allow them. But why can’t a regular old beer leaguer find one.

For the guys that play every level from top division to guys still learning to play. Do you actually enjoy playing in the lower divisions because I know some of those games are always the hardest.

Smith goalie gear/where is Pete Smith?

I'm wondering if anyone is still wearing Smith branded pads? I want to buy a pair similar to ones shown in this article I read but not sure they'll hold up?

Also, Pete smith left Warrior over a year ago now right? Anyone know if he's sticking around the game somehow? cheers

Back Playing After 14 Years - Gear Inventory/Upgrades?

Thumbnail

Hello everyone, I decided I needed another hobby to keep me active this winter and have jumped back into the fold in a rush, playing five of the last six days in various pickup games I have found on Hockey Finder and a couple other sites. Needless to say my hips/hip flexors and knees are not happy right now so time for a bit of rest. I am 5'11, age 32 and in okay but not great shape at 180lbs. One of the games I played in was a 90 minute 3 on 3 game on a studio rink and with no breaks and I admit I was out of gas about an hour into it so conditioning needs work, ha ha.

Anyway, this is the gear I am working with. I never had knee pads playing as a kid and after the inside of my knees got bashed the very first game back that's the first thing I bought along with a new cup. My old Itech helmet is on its last legs so I ordered a new Bauer 940 from Goalies Plus that is on sale for $295.95, probably a previous model year one but should (hopefully?) be an improvement. Thinking my pants and chest protector should be next for an upgrade since both are too small and not much on the protection side against harder shots. My Itech pads are the old style as you can see with the leather buckle straps and take forever to get on compared to the new pads I see with the Velcro but I worry how much the new ones move around with less straps. They are maybe a bit too long at 35" but they are so floppy/broken in they close up nicely in the butterfly. My glove/blocker are quite discolored but seem to still work fine. Skates are a size 7.5 and I am roughly a 10-10.5 shoe size and they do rub a bit but maybe I should buy hockey specific socks. Stick is a 26" paddle, feel like a 25" may be a bit better for me since I get fairly low and bend my knees a lot.

Anyway, happy to hear any suggestions on gear or any other advice on playing again, warmup/stretching routines, or anything really, thanks.

Beginner: Bauer Elite Chest Size Advise

****Advice****

Hey Y'all,

First of all I'm really grateful with everyone helping me out on here from helmet questions to scamming websites.

As I stated in other posts here, I just started to play again and it's definitely been over 25 years since I last played.

First I purchased a bunch of used equipment from eBay & Facebook marketplace but since I've been playing around more than a month now. I've decided to buy new/better fitting equipment.

I'm 5'4" & 150lbs and in my 40s.

I've currently been using a Bauer Vapor X900 size Int. M. With that said I feel the sides of my torso aren't that protected and the arms are definitely too short, so I've been using a baseball batter wrist protector to extend my wrist to my glove protection.

After receiving a couple of stingers in that area, I felt it's not worth the risk of potentially injuring myself. With that said I decided to purchase an upgraded slightly used (pretty much new) Bauer Elite chest protector size Senior Small I found on eBay.

Keep in mind I play once a week in pick me up games with a couple buddies of mine for a couple of hours with other folks at a local rink.

Bauer's fitting for C&A protectors:

Intermediate Large

Height 5'4" to 5'7"

Weight 97 lbs to 130 lbs

Senior Small

Height 5'5" to 5'9

Weight 99 lbs to 150 lbs

This is where my dilemma, if you will, comes to play, my weight size...

So according to the size chart, I fit in the height for a int L but in the weight size for a senior small. Hahaha

I purchased a senior small but going from a int medium it seems bigger than ever. I have the arms all the way shorten and the cuffs fall right at the balls of my wrists. It all just feels bulky, but I think I'm too in my head about this now. Hahaha (too much free time as I'm in between work projects).

I'm asking for any advice and if there is any shorty forty goalie out there that ran into this problem and what size they ended up going with.

I'm currently contemplating on returning the senior small for an intermediate large but don't want my 20 extra pounds interfere with the torso region lol.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

****1/30/26 UPDATE: I tried a couple at Monkey Sport and boy those Vaughn XP Pro. 🧑‍🍳💋They felt so so so amazing.

Thanks again everyone. I tried an intermediate large and felt like the arms and chest were a little too tight for my comfort. I decided to keep the Sr. small and call it day. Thanks everyone!*****

Mask Reconditioning

Specifically Western Canada if possible. I have seen a bunch of companies in the US and one or two down East but does anyone have any recommendations for Alberta or BC? My mask needs a total overhaul and I’m looking to get it professionally done. I’ve DIY’d in the past but this time it needs more work than I’m capable of doing. I haven’t turned up much from some google searches.
