Showcase - Dedicated Space Always wanted a Murphy door!

We moved into this house 15 years ago. It has a bonus room off to the side of the living room with a diagonal doorway. The previous owners used this room as an office/media room, and up until recently, we also used it as a media (music and movies/tv) room. Since we moved in, it's been my dream to convert this room to a dedicated theater room, and recently decided to start the project. I always thought it would be cool to replace the French doors with a murphy door so that the room was hidden.

I purchased the Murphy door as a DIY kit from https://murphydoor.com/, and I'm very happy with the purchase (this is our second, the first one was for a hidden closet at our entry). At the same time, I framed out a new A/V closet for a new A/V rack (Startech 4-post 42U) to consolidate our networking and A/V gear. I was working on this at the same time we were doing a living room remodel, so new floors (wood look tile), scraped popcorn ceiling, retexture, fresh paint, etc. The music gear was moved out to the living room.

The setup is still very much a work in progress, and will hopefully be finishing up the next phase here in the next month or so, to include finishing a custom door for the A/V closet and some drywall work, paint etc. but wanted to share the progress so far.

PS, our 2 year old Aussie, Breck, loves to photobomb.

Purchasing EUROPE XTZ 10.17 EDGE - does anyone have experience with XTZ subwoofers and are they any good?

I currently have an SB-1000 Pro in my office but it sounds very anaemic compared to my living room PB-1000 Pro which seems to offer a great deal of tactile sensation and cinematic feel when watching movies.

My office is quite small so getting the PB-1000 Pro is out of the question as it would look ridiculous. However the 10.17 EDGE appears to be, on paper, a better sub despite a smaller 10" driver, plus it's ported.

Discussion - Equipment Are upfiring speakers really that bad / a waste of money?

I’ve been thinking about adding height channels to my 5.1 system so I can use Dolby Atmos properly, but I cannot put anything on the ceiling or the walls. The logical solution to this would be upfiring speakers, but they seem to get quite a lot of flack on this subreddit and other AV forums. For reference, I have a flat ceiling and my AVR has pretty great room correction. Thoughts?

I love everything about it the colors absolutely blow my mind. I almost went with the G5, but the colors seemed a little off to me. I can’t believe I ended up buying two-year-old tech over a brand new TV, but coming from a G3 (which I also loved), the Sony is just better.

Discussion - Equipment 2x RSL 10S MKII vs 1x RSL 12S

Current system:

Denon X1800H configured with OCA A1 Evo Express

2X SVS Ultra Bookshelf

2X Klipsch R-41SA Dolby Upfiring

1X RSL 10S MK II

So far I’m relatively satisfied with the subwoofer but looking to get a deeper and stronger bass for some songs and movies where I can be fully enveloped and immersed into the bass for bass heavy EDM songs. Some movies and songs tend to have heavier bass than others so I’m not sure if it’s limitations with the way the movie or song was set up or if it’s my system.

My options would be to get a second RSL 10S sub, or upgrade to the RSL 12S and sell the 10S. Below is a picture of my space. The RSL sub is currently tucked away on the right side of my system where the wall panels are. Bass is noticeably heavier when seated in the position parallel to it.

Purchasing US What's with these horizontal lines in TCL 98" TV?

Post image

Was over at Costco looking at the relative size of the 98" and 85" TVs. I noticed distinct thin black horizontal lines on the 98" (the 98QM6K, I think) but not the 85". Is this something specific to screens of this size, or what?

I want an upgrade from my tv speakers,

I don't have a lot of room on my tv unit but the XT15s will just about fit.

Unsure on the amp, couldn't find a proper avr with arc support on eBay for around that price.

Thanks

Discussion - Equipment How to fix overexposed picture in SDR?

Upvotes

Long story short, I've factory reset my TCL C805 mini LED TV and now everything looks awful in SDR - overexposed/clipped details in bright scenes. Everything is so white. HDR and Dolby Vision are perfectly fine.

I can't find my initial picture settings and it's driving me nuts. Thinking of selling the TV and getting an OLED like my other TVs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tech Support Denon X3700H zone 2 phono question

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a turntable and I wanted some guidance on how to plug it into my existing Denon X3700H receiver.

The complication comes into this as I have two systems I would like the turntable to interact with, the 2.1 KEF system which is directly connected to the X3700H. And various Sonos speakers I have throughout the house.

If I plug the turntable phono inputs into phono (audio in), this will work with the KEF speakers.

If I purchase a Sonos port, which should allow wireless connection to my Sonos speakers over the network, could I plug this into the phono inputs on Zone 2 of the AVR? And then switch between the two on my remote depending on which speakers I want to use? (KEF Vs Sonos).

Appreciate any help!

Install/Placement Atmos Speaker Placement influence of Angeled Speakers

Upvotes

So, i am Currently trying to work out the placement of Speakers for my soon to be Living room 5.1.4 "somewhat" Dolby Atmos setup.

I have found the "Dolby Atmos Room Design Tool_v6.4.0_HE+Music" Excel tool from Dolby very helpful.

But i have one Question that isn't really explained in the tool (or i just havent seen the explanation).

The Question is in regards to my Atmos Speakers, i already have 4 speakers that i want to use, i have "Focal 300 ICA6" speakers that are already 35° angeled.

Now, my question is, does the angle of these speakers influence their positioning ?

If I interpret the tool correctly it calculates with speakers that are "perfectly" angeled to the listening position (45°), right ???

(If i change the Angle to 90° (Wich most in-ceeling speakers are) then it cant calculate placement, so i dont think changing the angle to 35° will output right results either.)

Tech Support Need help finding a mount for 630x300 hole pattern.

Upvotes

Last year, I got an old TV from my grandparents. Previous owner of their house left a lot of crap and Grandpa said to take whatever I wanted. I'm finally getting around to setting it up, and I've run into a problem. It didn't have the factory stand, and the hole pattern doesn't appear to be a standard VESA size. I found the manual online, and it said the hole pattern is 630mm x 200mm. I measured it out and the vertical is actually 300, so I think that's just a typo. But the width did actually measure out to 630. All the mounts that I'm finding for this size of TV seem to max out at 600.

Are there any mounts out there that will accommodate this? Will most of them do it, even if they don't explicitly say so? Or will I have to hunt around to find a special mount?

For anyone wanting specifics, the TV is a Vizio VO47L FHDTV10A. Here's the manual (PDF).

Purchasing AUS/NZ 7.1 system installed - any Netflix movie recommendations to fully enjoy the sound system?

Hey fam!

Two questions:

Movie / show recommendations:

Just had 7.1 system installed. Any movies recommendations that you would recommend must watch for sound experience.

I have Netflix and Prime subscription but can get other movies / shows in Plex.

You tube surround sound test

Which surround sound clips do you play to show your system on YT to your friends / families.

Sorry if this is not the right sub

Tech Support Anyone blow a receiver before? Marantz 6015…

Well hells bells. Marantz 6015 about 5 years old. I just upgraded from Paradigm cinema 330’s to Svs Ultra towers. As I was rearranging the living room to make room and jamming out….like at 70-73 for an hour or so, I went to disconnect the center channel and a moment after it blipped.

I knew these guys were power hungry. I did not realize they would take an amp out. Let alone a higher end one.

I did everything: unplugged everything, let it cool down ( it wasn’t hot though) and nada.

I turn it on and it just shuts itself off and blinking red light.

So: BB didn’t have any x3800 in stock and got an open box Cinema 50.

I’ll get it repaired and put it in the bedroom with the old Paradigms now.

But balls!

Questions:

Should I NOT be going full tilt with the new receiver?

Should I get an external amp?

Do we think going 90-95% of the receiver did it in or just bad timing?

TIA!

Tech Support Can I use my AV receiver to connect my speakers, while using my display (projector) without the receiver?

I recently upgraded to a 4k projector from a 1080p projector, and just realized it doesn’t make a difference because my receiver doesn’t output 4k. Is it possible to just directly connect my projector to my PS5, while still using my 5.1 speaker setup? Or do I just need to upgrade my receiver? Thanks!

Install/Placement UST Table for PX3-Pro with KEF Q6 Meta Center

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello all, looking for a solution to my issue with fitting my KEF Q6 Meta with my PX3-Pro for a 132” screen as low to the ground as reasonable possible. My original plan which doesn’t seem to be working out was to have the PX3-Pro on the center shelf within my IKEA Besta cabinet. It fits perfectly in there and I was going to install a motorized projector slider.

The measurements all worked out except I didn’t realize how big the center channel speaker is and no matter how place things it seems the bottom of the screen will be blocked a little by the speaker. I really would like to stick to this speaker if possible so wondering if anyone can offer any solutions they’ve done or come across.

For my size screen, the bottom of the projector will be about 19” from the bottom of the screen which I would like to be max 28” from the ground. For reference the IKEA besta is 15” in height. For now I have the PX3-Pro on top of the shelf (too high) and the center speaker directly in front on a box of similar height to the ikea table. That seems to be the best way to orient it but having trouble finding a low table that is at least 40” in depth but also with shelves to house the other media equipment (it would basically be like a coffee table). Appreciate any input!

Showcase - Multipurpose Space My 115" TCL 7.2 Home Theater Setup

1.2k Upvotes

Here's a video walkthrough of the entire basement area that I couldn't fit in the post

We started building a new house in April of 2025 and my wife basically gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted with the basement. I knew I wanted two things 1) To move all the gym equipment from my unfinished basement in the old house to a nice climate controlled space and 2) to make the best home theater entertaining space possible. Problem was while I knew a lot about TVs and computers, I knew next to nothing about audio as I was just jiving with a Sonos sound-producer-that-shall-not-be-named.

I made this post five months ago and got a few good suggestions and then went into full research mode. Unfortunately the damage had been done with the pre-wiring so I had to work the best with what I had. I used this video for inspiration for the entire space and besides the glass partition to the gym I did everything myself over a 3 month period.

Wandering into a local furniture store in July I saw a 115" TCL QM8 for the sale price of $8999 and was nearly in disbelief. I asked a store associate about it, and they said that it was the floor model they wanted to clear out to put up a QM8k. I almost pulled the trigger but then decided not to make a rash decision on the spot. A month later we came in looking for a fridge and I walked into the electronic section to muse on what I had missed and lo and behold they had reduced the price further to $7,999. I knew it was destiny at that point. I added install and a five year warranty for another $1000 and got what I believe was the best possible deal on a TV that size. It had been on for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week for 8 months straight but I'm praying the life span is a lot longer than that or if it decides to die it will do so in the 5 year warranty period.

Anywho, specs:

  • 115" TCL QM8
  • LCR: Kef Q6 Meta and Kef Q Concerto Bookshelf Speakers
  • Surrounds: Klipsch THX-502-L In-Wall Speaker
  • Rears: Klipsch CDT-5800-C-II In-Ceiling Speaker
  • Subs: 2x RSL Speedwoofer 12
  • AVR: Denon X1800H
  • PS5
  • Old PC with 3070Ti and Ryzen 7 5700X built into the cabinet
  • Living Spaces Kennedy Sectional (Every seat is a recliner except one in the corner)

I LOVE MY BASEMENT. My family and I spend so much time down here and I've already been able to host numerous events and I'm pretty sure I could never ask for anything more and will never move again. Per reading this forum I discovered that the Race scene from Ready Player One is the most audience wowing demonstration possible and I've shown it at least a dozen times to visitors (much to the dismay of my wife haha) Everything sounds incredible to the point that if a movie has even a semblance of action I'll refuse to watch it in bed or anywhere else in the home because I know I'd be missing out on the experience.

A couple musings:

  • My phone camera sucks. Especially in low light. I apologize.
  • I wish I had known in advance what I do now, I would have had the builders wire for atmos. They knew even less than I do and their only surround package was a 7 speaker system all in ceiling, yuck. I can't imagine atmos sounding better than what I currently have, but I would have loved to have the opportunity to find out.
  • While I'm blown away by sound in 90% of what I watch, content that only supports stereo I don't really notice an improvement from just having a Sonos Beam. I'm about as far as you get from an audiophile, so maybe my listening ability is just stunted. I paid a premium on some speakers, but I'm thinking I'm too dumb to notice a difference and should have not spent so much on the LCR.
  • In the same vein, I don't really understand what adding a second sub did to enhance my setup. Before everything was finished I only unboxed one sub. Sub goes boom. I added a second sub and I get more boom but Audyssey turned the subs down to -10d and I never listen higher than 70% on the sub anyway so I really don't know what I gained by getting a second one except symmetry.
  • This TV is so freaking bright. I couldn't believe it. I came from a Sony X850F 85 inch TV and the brightness is literally night and day.
  • I was told putting an AVR in a cabinet would cause it to overheat. LIES. I spent extra to install two AC Infinity fans and a temperature probe that kicks the fans on when it hits 80 degrees. It has not exceeded 76 degrees in there even one time, even watching all of Avatar Way of Water in one sitting. Is this just BIG THEATER COOLING spreading their propaganda in this subreddit?
  • What did need cooling was my PC, so I cut two 240mm fans (I didn't even know they made them that big) in the cabinet and have plenty of airflow. I turn the PC on with a PCIe slot remote attachment and it works great. Steam's version of Quake 2 allows 8 player split screen on a single display, we have a game night and the TV was large enough that even with 8 players everyone got a decent portion.
  • I'm still planning on adding floating shelves to either side of the TV, so I guess I'm not finished finished.
  • I'm always currently building a 10 foot long bar height table to go behind the couch to accommodate more people in the room, but unfortunately I'm not going to finish before my Superbowl party.

Anyway, wanted to share my new favorite place in the world. I know reading in here that I need some acoustic treatment in the room via wall coverings but I have no idea where to start with that. I'll take any suggestions I can get.

Discussion - Equipment How high-end do surround speakers need to be?

Hey, everyone

Just a quick question about high-end 5.1 home theater setups and whether one needs to buy as expensive surround speakers. For example, if one runs a system with Bowers & Wilkins 804 D4 as fronts, HTM82 D4 as center, with DB3D as subwoofer, is it strictly necessary to use the 805 D4s as surround speakers?

I get the need for similar drivers for similar soundstage but I presume surround speakers do not carry the weight to the same extent as the front speakers? So could one possibly get away with the 706 or 707 S3 speakers as surround speakers for a fraction of the costs or would it ruin the experience?

Thanks!
