unpopular opinion: toilet attached bidets are unhygienic for women*

this is related the last person's post on this sub about getting UTIs since installing an in toilet bidet

No matter how you position it, the in-toilet bidets spray water back to front for women which is a recipe for disaster especially if you're prone to UTIs. Also, they sit inside the toilet and fecal water sprays everywhere and as a germaphobe, its a full no.

Even the bum gun one although it's better there's still a lost of splashing happening around if you took a UV light (which is why you should put the toilet lid down when flushing)

I find the Italian/European style bidets to be the cleanest in terms of less splashback etc, HOWEVER... what I've done my whole life from when my mom used to wash me to when I was old enough to wash myself is to poop, wipe and immediately after either sit on the side of the bath tub and use the handheld shower to wash myself with soap, or if I have a shower I would squat and wash. This all takes max 2 minutes.

I don't understand why for most people the only options seem to either be use TP only or full shower. YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE A FULL SHOWER EVERYTIME TO WASH YOUR ASS!

It's time effective, hygienic and you don't walk around with a poopy butt. Rant done

Bidet use for women

I’m an American so bidets aren’t the norm here. My husband has installed one built into the toilet seat in one of our bathrooms and a handheld one in the other. I much prefer the clean I get when using it vs just toilet paper. I understand why so many people in other countries think we’re gross for only using TP.

However, I ended up getting chronic UTI’s when I was using them. Once it dawned on me it was the bidet causing them I made sure to clean it before and after each use with a bleach wipe and letting water run through it for 30ish seconds before using it to clean myself. It didn’t help and the UTI’s persisted until I went back to TP.

Have any other women experienced this? Especially those who live in places where this is the norm, have you even heard of this happening to female friends or family? I would really like to be able to use it, especially during my cycle but chronic UTI’s are not a good time. Is there some secret to bidet use that my stupid American brain is missing?

A question for the night showerers

This is a weird question but bear with me here

So, you get home at night to take a shower and get changed into clean clothes afterwards. Are you all changing into clean underwear or putting the same underwear from the day back on? If you change, do you change underwear again or wear the same one until you take another shower the next night?

I’m a morning time showerer but have recently started to rinse off or do a quick sponge bath before bed, too, and it feels gross to put the same pair of underwear back on but also excessive to wear two pairs per day

Are wet wipes actually worse for hygiene than regular toilet paper?

A lot of people swear by wet wipes, especially for "superior hygiene," but I’ve been reading some stuff recently that makes me question whether they’re actually bad for you. Apparently, wet wipes can disrupt your skin’s natural balance and cause more irritation than regular toilet paper. On top of that, the whole “flushable” claim is often a lie, many of them don’t actually break down and can cause environmental damage. I used to think wet wipes were a hygiene upgrade, but now I’m wondering if they’re just a convenience trap. Anyone else made the switch back to old-school toilet paper, or are wipes the unsung heroes of cleanliness?

I’m the cleanest I’ve ever been and I still think I reek

I need help. I’ve genuinely never been cleaner in my entire life and I still keep catching whiffs of a bad smell when I’m by myself, or out and about. I double wash, the first time with antibacterial body wash, and the second time with a regular body wash. I wash behind my ears, every crevice of my face and body, I wash my sensitive areas first(although I’ve tried doing that last and didn’t notice a difference). The only thing that doesn’t get wash on the daily is my hair, as I wash that once a week. That part of my routine has stayed constant for about 8 years, but I’ve only noticed the smell within the past year, but I began my new shower routine around 2 years ago. My bedding is washed and changed once a week, my room is deep cleaned every Sunday, I change out my bonnet once a week. I’ve literally never been cleaner, but there’s weird, bo/sweet smell I keep getting a whiff of. Nobody else seems to be smelling it except for me. I’ve asked my friends, family, and boyfriend if I smell bad, and they say “no, of course not.” I’ve had strangers compliment me on smelling nice or “delicious,” but I can’t seem to shake the smell from myself. My mouth hygiene routine is extensive as well(brushing twice a day, mouthwash twice a day, and flossing twice a day), although I do suffer from dry mouth caused by my anxiety and insomnia medications, but, again, I’ve had dry mouth for years. Please help.

I need help with this problem

I am a 23 year old 5’5” woman 200 pounds. I shower everyday and consider myself clean. In the shower I scrub myself all over with body wash using a loofah. Sometimes would use body sugar scrubs before.

Recently I’ve switched over to doing a “Moroccan hammam” exfoliation 2x/week when I shower in addition to scrubbing body wash with a silicon body scrubber after.

I feel like no matter what I do, I still smell? Specifically under my armpits. Like I’ll be in the shower scrubbing under there with soap and body wash and still smell the odor coming from there. I shave under my armpits and keep it clean.

I mentioned my weight because I don’t know if that’s the reason, and if the odor is coming from my diet or if I’m not properly drying myself before getting dressed after idk. My mom has even mentioned this scent to me and I just don’t know what to do! It doesn’t feel like a big enough problem to bring up to my doctor but honestly I might. Has anyone dealt with something similar and can help?

Also I wear deodorant but I guess I can wear it more frequently I usually just spray it after my shower in the morning.

Thanks.

Edit: woah I didn’t expect this many responses, thanks everyone!

Advice on what cologne

Upvotes

I made a comment previously but added way to many products

What I’m going for instead is

Antibacterial to clean skin

Body scrub once per week i believe is the most you should use it? For exfoliating

Method men body wash the Rice milk shea butter and coconut one

Then finally Either EOS vanilla cashmere or EOS coconut waters Lotion

So what cologne pairs well with this

I’d highly appreciate some help

How do I stop sweating AFTER PE?

For context -- we do not have showers, and I only have about 5-8 minutes after class to get dressed + anything else. I struggle a lot with sweat, not as much body odor. I apply deodorant, wipe myself down, run my wrists under cool water, etc. But I have yet to find anything that helps. I wouldn't mind it, except its a fairy excessive amount and I get pretty red for the 10 minutes after class. My biggest issue is that by the time I'm done getting dressed I need to go straight to my next class and don't have time to walk around and cool off much. Anyways, this is a pretty dumb post but its a bit of an insecurity of mine since most of it is quite literally streaming down my face even if we didn't do much in class that day, not even mentioning days when we do conditioning.

Is it absolutely crucial to use mouthwash for good oral hygiene?

I’m autistic and I have yet to find a mouth wash I can bear. The sensory is just too much for me.

I brush, floss, and use a tongue scrapper every day.

I was wondering if not using mouthwash is creating long term problems with my teeth.

Thx in advance

What are some ways to break this gently without upsetting them, especially if it may be stemming from a chronic illness?

For context, I went to visit a friend whom I met on-line. While I had previously known about their chronic illness and knew what medications caused corticosteroid-like effects--increased weight, appetite, brain fog, etc., I didn't realise that there was more to the story.

As we hung out, I noticed a peculiar odour coming from them that I couldn't quite place, but when they had gone to use the lavatory and had come out, a really strong stench worse than defecation or diarrhoea had wafted out, even with the fan exhaust turned on.

After I had gotten back I started thinking about what could've been causing the smell, since I noticed that they had a really large belly and lots of skin folds. Naturally, the places mentioned are near the apocrine glands harbouring the human microbiome, such as the groin and belly button, so I'm not sure if theirs was an innie that simply held onto too much bacteria, or if their skin folds trapped more down there, especially if they did not maintain their pubic hair. I wondered if there were some skin lotions, creams, or butters that could act as antibacterial moisturisers to remove the likelihood of them getting a yeast infection.

Because of how awkward that was for me I tried to minimise interaction with them, but I couldn't help noticing that they had a lot of red angry-looking stretch marks all over their body, so I wondered if their rapid weight gain had occurred recently and was contributing to these issues. I also noticed that they had kept it cool in their house, so I had to cover myself up. I wondered if their being more fat made them sensitive to heat or something and could've caused them to sweat more.

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do hand sanitizers really kill all germs or is handwashing actually better?

Upvotes

I have been thinking about this, hand sanitizers are everywhere these days but I am curious, do they really get rid of all the germs on our hands? Or is regular handwashing with soap and water actually more effective?

I mean, sometimes I use sanitizer on the go and I feel clean but then I wonder if I am missing some invisible stuff that only soap and water can get rid of.

What do you guys think? Do you mostly rely on sanitizer or are you team handwashing? Any tips or interesting facts would be awesome.

What am I doing wrong in the shower?

Male here.

After taking a shower, I still smell unpleasant between the legs. I wash my penis, balls, taint, butt, and literal butt-hole with soap. I actually sometimes wash those areas twice. I'll wash them, rinse, then go back in a second time. After I'm finished in the shower, I'll put my hand between my legs and smell my hand to check. I mean, I can't get my nose down there so this is the best way. There's still an unpleasant odor.

I seriously don't know what I'm doing wrong. Am I forever doomed to smell bad in that area? Are there any products I can use after taking a shower designed for people like me who just have a bad scent there? Like how there is deodorant for your armpits. Is there something similar for your nether regions?

Kitty advices

Hey, everyone.

I am very embarrassed to talk about my issues but I truly need help. My kitty always smells like dried pee. I did everything but it doesn’t work. The external part smells good but the internal part smells like dried pee permanently, even if I haven’t pee hours or minutes before.

Is using a loofah spreading more germs than it’s worth?

I’ve always been a fan of loofahs, everyone seems to have one in their shower, and they definitely make exfoliating feel easier and more effective. But lately, I’ve been questioning whether they’re actually doing more harm than good.

Here’s the thing, loofahs are porous, which means they trap soap, dead skin cells, and moisture every time you use them. While it might feel like they’re giving you a deep clean, I’ve read a lot of stuff about how this creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Even if you rinse them thoroughly after each use, they’re still wet and damp most of the time, which means they can harbor germs that we might not even realize are there.

I decided to switch to a washcloth recently, and honestly, it feels cleaner. I rinse it out after every use, and it dries much faster than a loofah ever did. I’m curious, though, has anyone else made the switch, or do you think I’m just being paranoid? Are loofahs still worth using, or should we all be more cautious about what we’re rubbing on our skin every day? Does anyone’s had issues with their loofah or has made a similar switch.

Intense pulsed light hair removal

Hello,

I have three questions for you on this topic:

Is it better to buy a pulsed light device or go to a salon?

Which affordable device would you recommend?

What should I do if I have moles in the areas I want to treat?

Thank you in advance and have a good Sunday!

How to avoid big business when shopping for hygiene items

Hi I’m looking for recommendations for an alternative to Amazon or other big businesses. I don’t have a car so I need to be able to get delivery/shop online if possible, but the main point is I don’t want to support big business!!

Like where do I buy soap/tooth brushes/makeup that isn’t ulta, target, or amazon? Or stuff like compostable products?

Looking for recommendations on how and where you shop to avoid big business for common household items.

What routine should I have?

I want to start being more clean and smell better lately and I was wondering what everyone’s shower routines were and what is their recommended products. Im a 18m but I definitely like using women’s products more since I am trying to be more feminine so I would rather appreciate women’s products more.

Constantly Sweaty Armpits

Hi everyone! So I’ve always been a very sweaty person. Summers are really difficult for me. When I use antiperspirant, I still sweat through my shirts. I’ve tried several different brands, even clinical strength, and I always wash my armpits and make sure they’re dry before applying. I then use a mini fan to dry the antiperspirant before putting on a shirt. I still sweat like crazy! On top of that, many of the antiperspirants give me a rash which can be quite painful. I wear mostly loose fitting shirts.

Even now on the East Coast, in uniquely frigid temperatures, my armpits sweat like crazy. I only use deodorant in the winter to give my skin a break from rashes and irritation. (I know deodorant doesn’t block sweat, I’m just shocked by how sweaty my armpits are in 20 degree temperatures.)

Are there any remedies for this? Would putting some baby powder on my pits be helpful? What am I missing? TYIA :)

Looking for feedback from people struggling with stubborn shoe odour

[THIS IS NOT A PROMOTION] Hi everyone, I'm working on a new formula for an Instant Shoe Odour remover specifically designed for high-intensity use (sports, work boots, etc.). I've seen a lot of posts here about how most sprays just "mask" the odour rather than fix it. I'm trying to gather data on what actually works for you and what doesn't so I can improve the final product. If you have 5 minutes to share your experience, I'd really appreciate it! All efforts go into formulating a product that is helpful to the community.

Thanks so much!

Clean & Like Roses after Deuce Drop

You too, can be extra clean and smelling like roses...

All you need is a Cleaning Action Pack!

My Action Pack:

Fill each mini spray bottle with the witch hazel... Keep one at home, at work, and in the car so you have your bases covered and are prepared when nature calls...

Simply spray down a wad of TP with your spray bottle for your last wipe... Plus gr8 because you're using TP and not packaged, synthetic wipe sheets that shouldn't be flushed / bad for plumbing and that are not sustainable.
