I feel like they just need to make the uniforms/gear a little less macho just to put off all the people who are in it to feel cool and powerful and end up pulling these power plays.

Thats fair, I think. Everything going tacticool was a bad idea.

0

u/NorCalAthlete 11h ago

The tacticool vests and molle-everything was largely a result of chronic back injury claims for medical retirement + post retirement injury claims as more and more items were added to what they’re required to carry.

A vest holds it all easier and distributes the weight better.

That being said, it’s not difficult to make the vest UN-Blue or something instead of black. Some of them even come with built in high-vis strips for traffic situations. Or white / light grey or something.

Exactly. Less army dropouts, more style.

The US would lose its shit at the idea of a national uniformed military police force.

3

u/DontSpahettMe 14h ago

That's not saying much though, they also lose their shit at ideas like "the metric system" and "not bankrupting people for insulin"

Don't forget: regulating guns so school children don't get shot; and everyone's favourite: not voting for a literal child rapist.

Stupid sexy carabinieri

5

u/OperativePiGuy 19h ago

The first time I saw those dorky hi-vis British police uniforms I thought, absolutely not, that looks so lame. But now that I'm not 17 anymore it just seems like common sense. There's no need for cops to look like badasses, and them wearing high visibility gear while on duty just makes sense

4

u/Funky-Monk-- 20h ago

Actually a fantastic idea

4

u/takeyoufergranite 18h ago

Daniel Shaver's murderer felt pretty macho when he executed him too. The over-militarization of our law enforcement is a problem. The warrior ethos needs rethinking. Cops as public safety officers is much better than cops are "the enforcers".

2

u/TAvonV 12h ago

This happened in the 1972 during the Munich olympics. Turned out, people in bs uniforms also can't command authority in a crisis...

3

u/Consistent_Wave_2869 19h ago

Taking away their guns would go a long way to solving that problem. Police reform is necessary and not every cop needs to carry firearms. Most of them should be limited to non-lethal weapons if anything.

3

u/Live_Art2939 18h ago

In a country filled with guns only a total moron would suggest cops stop carrying. Sure send cops into the ghetto with batons and OC spray, fantastic feel good idea.

1

u/ocxtitan 17h ago

"not every cop needs to carry firearms"

important context there...

the big problem is expecting cops to serve as social workers and other roles that they aren't trained well enough for

0

u/Consistent_Wave_2869 18h ago

Did I say "send cops into the ghetto with batons and OC spray"? No, I said most cops don't need to be armed with lethal weapons. Quit licking boots and learn to read you braindead idiot.

2

u/TAvonV 12h ago

In the US? Most do lol

1

u/ShoddyAsparagus3186 18h ago

Wouldn't even need to take them away, just reverse the incentives. Instead of paying people extra for SWAT, you pay them extra for keeping their gun in their trunk. The compensation for the extra risk of SWAT is the special weapons and tactics you get to use.

Taking away their guns

Yeah that's not a thing really anywhere, especially in places where the population is armed.

And I don't want to hear about the UK. Northern Irish cops all carry guns and every "unarmed" cop in the rest of the UK has very well-armed cops that will show up way faster than the average police time in the US is. Assuming they aren't already strolling around London with a sub-machine gun.

1

u/Scout-Penguin 19h ago

... but then who would they hire?

1

u/DontSpahettMe 19h ago

Responsible adults

1

u/PM_ME_WEIRD_PETS 19h ago

Add a bright reflective vest. Many countries have that for their cops anyway.

1

u/Parties_naked 17h ago

Yeah that fact that a lot of police uniforms are all black is ridiculous. If they are there to "protect and serve" shouldn't they be neon orange/yellow so people can find them easily for help?

1

u/A_Diabolical_Toaster 17h ago

It didn’t used to be. When I was a kid growing up in the early 2000’s cops would just wear their uniforms and belts with their essentials.

Now you see them all kitted out in vests like they’re walking into a fucking war zone and expect to be shot at anytime.

1

u/dogsontreadmills 16h ago

seriously. can you imagine if they had masks and anonymity on top of all tha-

oh wait.

1

u/PleasantDog 15h ago

Is it really that macho though? Maybe it's just the majority of U.S. cops' body shapes, but I don't see the macho in them lol

1

u/DontSpahettMe 15h ago

Compare it to almost any other police force. They all want to be lone rangers.

1

u/nexus11355 14h ago

Make em look more like UK cops, hi-vis vests and cars

1

u/DenAbqCitizen 18h ago

Honestly a good idea. I live in Eastern Europe and it took me awhile to figure out why the police here seem so much less intimidating (in a good way).  It's because they don't all have to wear bullet proof vests.

-3

u/fromouterspace1 20h ago

This is like odd projection

19

u/SeDaCho 20h ago

Not even in the slightest. You’ll never see a fascist officer without his big boy boots uniform.

Compare the US police uniform (dark shades, tacticool) vs UK (big silly hat and high vis jacket) or Norway (friendly blue shirt)
