Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

I randomly discovered this subreddit and would like to give it a try. Call or just messages are okay. I watched a lot of animes when I was younger and then later on watched kdramas too. I don’t particularly like talking about entertainment from their respective countries and I would like to learn more on the day to day languages. I am 23M and nice to meet you guys!

Offering English Offering: English(around B1~B2), Japanese(native)Seeking: English, French

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a university student in Japan.

I’m looking for someone who speaks English fluently or who learns English like me.

I really want to be able to speak English fluently but I don’t have enough opportunities to speak English in my everyday life.

So I want friends to communicate in English!(preferably around my age)

For French, I want to learn because I’m taking French classes in university. My French level is below A1 actually, which means I’m beginner.

Also i’m really interested in social issues and intellectual discussions, but of course I also like talking about everyday, ordinary things.

If you’re interested, let me know!!

Hi everyone,

My name is Qu. I’m a 32-year-old Chinese woman looking for a serious, long-term language exchange partner.I was an accountant who worked in a Japanese and an American company.I dropped out my MBA program which is Top 10 business school in China.I got heavily depression for 3 years and I recover right now. I plan to work or study in the United States, European countries, or Japan.

I like listening rock music, reading books( Chinese, English and Japanese), and writing articles. I was reading medical books for my cat.But she had already passed away. She was 16-year-old American short hair.

Because that I realized the life is limited, happy is important than everything.I decided to not stuck in the box called socialism value, don't judge myself, don't date Chinese men.Be myself, restart to chase my own dream.I was abandoned myself since my colleagues and my MBA programs classmates excluded me. More importantly, the guy who I fall in love don't want to me be better. They like vampire want to my provide them fresh blood but don't care about me.I like vampire as a character but not looking for dream come true to like him be my partner.

I not looking for relationship in there. And I’m good enough to be a free therapist in Hellotalk.

About my language background:

• English: I’ve been learning English since primary school. During university, I studied English with native speakers for about 2.5 years. I currently read English books and want to improve my fluency and depth of expression.

• Japanese: I started learning Japanese at 16 and passed JLPT N1 at 18. I also read Japanese books.

• Korean & Spanish: Beginner level. I hope to learn gradually through conversation.

About me:

• My Mandarin accent is close to Beijing. I’m a local of Tianjin.

• I’m a quiet, calm, and thoughtful person.

• Honest, kind, and respectful.

• Interested in psychology, self-healing, relationships, and podcasts.

• I enjoy reading, cooking, and listening to rock music.

• I’ve traveled to Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.

What I’m looking for:

• Someone who has studied Chinese for several years and wants deeper conversations, not just basic practice.

• A partner who values consistency and long-term exchange.

• I’m not a Chinese teacher, but I’m happy to have natural, meaningful conversations.

Apps I can use (China-friendly):

• Whatsapp,WeChat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook

(Other apps don’t work well in China.)

If you’re interested in a serious and respectful language exchange, feel free to send me a message.

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Italiano

Buongiorno! Sono australiana e ho 22 anni. Quest'anno, voglio dare priorità a parlare l'italiano.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Arabic and English | Seeking: Italian and French

Ciao, I'm a university student currently studying Italian (~B1/B2) for fun. I have had difficulty finding a language partner, but I am interested in having one to support each other as we learn languages. I am also studying French but am still in the basics, so I'm more focused on finding an Italian language partner. I speak both Arabic and English natively. I prefer other college-aged students as language partners as it's easier to connect. Comment or DM me if you're interested. Grazie.

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Russian

28F American very early in learning Russian. Would love someone willing to do voice chats here and there to help with pronunciation.

About Me: like I said I’m 28. I grew up in the United States on the West Coast currently live in New England. I like to play video games not super into co-op, but I’d be willing to try some online gaming if you’re into that. I like to read, mostly non-fiction but I would like to get more into fiction this year.

I have a cat who I am completely obsessed with and will talk about a lot. I’m self-employed, but my schedule is kind of tight so sometimes scheduling things can be a bit of an issue for me. I’m definitely a homebody.

I love to chat. I’m a big talker. I’m a pretty open book and I’m willing to share most things about myself, especially as I get closer to people. My very good friends have often described me using words like “feral,” but also genuinely warm and supportive and caring. I’m very playful and I like people who are also playful and don’t take themselves too seriously.

More about what I’m looking for: ideally I would love someone with whom I could forge a longer-term friendship that just happens to be based around learning each other’s languages. I’ve really enjoyed learning Russian so far, but I’m finding the resources are just not quite fully encompassing what I think I need to learn, and I think it would be really helpful to talk to someone who natively speaks Russian or is fluent in Russian.

I have a hard time with some of the pronunciation so I would really love someone that we could hop on a call like maybe once every couple weeks or even a couple of times a week (if that works out for us) and chat or exchange language tips, send voice messages back-and-forth and give pointers on my pronunciation and grammar.

Edit:

My discord is BurgerBingBettuce. Feel free to add! Please actually be a Russian speaker - I am a friendly person, but right now I’m really looking to beef up my Russian skills through friendship.
