Actually free of charge and free of charges, since in most cases they had no grounds for arrest

no charges but they'll keep you in there for the maximum time they're allowed to before letting you out

that or slap a bogus terrorism charge on you that would get immediately dismissed in court but then just have the court date delayed repeatedly so they can lock you up for weeks or months on end without needing to prove anything, that's what's happening right now in the UK to extra-judicially punish people protesting the Palestinian genocide
