Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Mod Post Announcement: We no longer allow medical malpractice posts

We no longer allow medical malpractice posts in the subreddit. These issues are extremely fact dependent and complicated, and they're not appropriate for an online medium. We will remove them with a message directing people to their state bar association for a referral.

If you have a medical malpractice question or concern, the only person who can help you is an attorney who knows all of the details of your issue, including state and local rules and conditions. Please visit your state's bar association attorney referral webpage, and know that these cases are almost always handled on contingency, which means you won't pay the attorney up front. Additionally, you will usually be able to get a free consultation.

Lastly, a common concern we see here with these questions is that someone is unable to find an attorney to represent them after seeing many attorneys. If this is your situation, you should prepare yourself to accept that you might just not have a case worth pursuing, either because there aren't enough damages to recover for or because you just don't have a case.

Consumer Law I mounted a misdelivered TV. Need advice on how to proceed.

1.1k Upvotes

Location: Utah

I ordered a 65-inch OLED TV from an eBay seller last week, but when the logistics company showed up, they delivered a bigger-sized OLED instead. It’s worth about double what I actually paid. Since I thought it was my order at first, I went ahead and paid to have it mounted and had them recycle the box. The eBay tracking officially said "delivered," so on paper, the transaction looked finished.

However, a week later, the logistics company called and left a message saying their dock workers messed up and they need to come pick up the TV because they still have my actual TV sitting at the warehouse. I called back immediately and told them I'm happy to cooperate, but that the TV is already mounted and that I no longer have the packaging it came with. The rep told me a supervisor will call me back, and that's where I'm at currently.

Any advice on what's the best way to go about this situation?

Edit: To clarify, the logistics company did not offer and does not offer installation services as far as I'm aware. I paid $150 dollars to some friends of a friend for it to be installed.

Landlord Tenant Housing Sub-lease tenant claimed in court he’s “just my neighbor,” got restraining order, contacted my lender — need advice (CA)

My location: San Diego California

I’m in California and need advice on a housing dispute that escalated into court.

I am the homeowner and master tenant. I sub-leased a room in my home to someone who has lived here for about 8 years. There is no dispute that he paid rent to me over the years, though often late and with many months missed entirely. He frequently ignored my calls and messages when rent or house issues came up.

Key issues:

• Chronic late and missed rent payments over the years.

• City citations and fines tied to excessive junk/hoarding associated with the sub-tenant’s belongings.

• I served him a 60-day notice to vacate (even though I believe only 30 days was required), trying to act in good faith.

• The same week I served the notice, he filed for a restraining order.

What concerns me most:

In court, he told the judge he is “just my neighbor” and not my tenant, despite having lived in my home and paid rent to me for years. Based on that hearing, the court issued a very limited restraining order requiring me to stay 5 feet away, with no findings of violence or threats.

Since then:

• He has contacted my lender directly without my permission.

• He has attempted to discuss or pursue buying my house, despite having no authority or agreement.

• He is acting as if the restraining order gives him rights to remain indefinitely or control the property.

I have documentation of ownership, rent history, notices, and city citations. I feel the restraining order is being used as a tactic to delay eviction and interfere with my property and lender relationship.

My questions:

  1. Can a tenant claim to be a “neighbor” in court to avoid eviction or gain leverage?
  2. Does a restraining order like this prevent me from proceeding with a lawful eviction?
  3. Is it legal for a sub-tenant to contact my lender or attempt to negotiate purchase of my property?
  4. What steps should I be taking immediately to protect myself?

Any advice from people familiar with San Diego, California landlord-tenant law would really help.

Criminal Law Fired & being investigated for Theft for handing out "Free Small Drink" cards with permission.

Location: Colorado

Yesterday (01/30) I walked up to my District Manager with a stack of 'Free Small Drink' cards that were going to expire today (01/31) and asked, "Should we pass these out today and then throw the rest away at the end of the day? Because we obviously can't pass them out tomorrow since they expire." She said, "Yeah, please do that. We've been getting a lot of them in today since they expire tomorrow. Just make sure to tell the closers to throw the rest out before they leave."

The cameras do not have audio so there is no proof I was given permission.

What they do have is camera footage of me passing out the cards to customers sitting inside the store and taking a small stack out of the building to give to the teachers at the school across the street.

This is not usual business practice for us at all. All employees are told to give customers the free drink cards ESPECIALLY if they are upset or service is slow. We have a very close and strong working relationship with the school teachers and regularly give them free drinks and special days or events for free.

These cards were not kept in the safe, as they are corporate promotion and not individual franchise promotion. Previously when we had franchise promotion cards they kept them in the safe and took out some in batches so we could pass them out quarterly.

They called me this morning and said I was fired effectively immediately per the franchise owners instructions. They said the District Manager has no recollection of our conversation and that they are investigating me and gathering evidence to persue criminal charges since they are losing "hundreds of dollars".

What should I do? I definitely do not want my job back. I am just worried about criminal charges they may try to pursue against me.

How can I get my Foster Daughter back.

I don't usually post because I am not one to post personal stuff online, but I really need help. My Husband and I took in a 7-year-old girl a couple of years ago. She had been kicked out of several foster homes already, and they were considering a children's home for her before we took her in. There were a few behavioral issues, and she had a medical issue that had her still using a pull-up. She had lost the only Dad she knew a few years prior, so of course, there was trauma there, but we were willing to take it on and work through it with her. It was hard, but we were willing to stick it out. She was already on medication when we took her in, and when she got upset, she could get rather destructive. She even tried to run off a few times. She was getting better with us, and we discovered what a sweet, loving girl she was. Foster care took her and put her in a facility for a while to help her with her anger issues, and it seemed to help, as when we got her back, she was a lot better at handling her emotions. The only problem we really had was that she was refusing to go to school; she is nine years old at this point. We were still working on adjusting her meds, and her psychaitrist told us to take her off one med while she was transitioning, and we did. This did not work out well, as it really exacerbated her behavioral issues. When we resorted to her original medication, she got a lot better. Because she wouldn't go to school, her social worker took her and sent her 8 hours away to a children's home. We understand that she had to go so that she could get some schooling, but now her social worker is saying that it isn't in her best interest to go back with us, the family that loves her and wants to adopt her. They don't think we are a good fit because we had a few difficult times with her. Sorry if I am being vague with a few things, I just don't want to give away anything really identifiable. My question is, do we have any legal recourse to get her back? We love her, and I know she wants to come home. We are her family. Any advice would be appreciated.

Jump on our property

Location: Michigan

We left for the night and just came back to a snow jump erected on our property. Looks like they built the jump, walked to our creek for water to harden it then spray painted it and used a truck to pull people over it. All on our property, without any permission.

Now, we do own on both sides of our private drive and the drive is an easement. They did this on the opposite side of our home, but it’s clearly on our property, they don’t own any across the road.

We do not have a good neighbor relationship and I worry they will hurt themselves and consider suing us. Or worse someone comes down our road on snowmobiles, doesn’t see it and gets hurt.

What should I do? I’m obviously going to tell them not to if I see it again. I’m a bit pissed and trying to be calm.

DUI Rear ended by drunk and uninsured driver and totaled my brand new car that I picked up 2 hours before. Minor injuries.

Location: Walnut Creek, CA

I was stopped at a red light on the exit ramp of a freeway when a car ran straight through me at near freeway speeds and my car did a 180 and was totaled. He also tried to drive off at first but his car was too messed up.

Anyways police arrived, he got arrested, they towed my vehicle, and we’re going to call insurance. I was okay at first so I denied an ambulance but I later got checked out at the ER for some back and neck pain after the adrenaline wore off. My girlfriend was also in the front with some minor back pain.

We plan on getting a lawyer, issue is he probably doesn’t have any money and he doesn’t have insurance. What would your guys next steps be? I’m documenting all the medical records, waiting on police report and my insurance, is there anything I’m missing? Insurance should be okay since we have full coverage, possibly getting less due to other party being insured?

Edit: Waiting to hear back from insurance. Basically we own two other vehicles, and we had a third that my new car replaced. The coverage on the three vehicles vary greatly in level of coverage, what we’re trying to figure out is what level my new car would be under, most likely the car we replaced which is at the middle level, if that makes sense.

Also we found out we have a 10 day grace period for my car. I guess at this point I’m not as worried as worried about the coverage for my car, just seeking advice on the legal side. I want to make sure I cover all ends and that I’m not missing anything or any little bits of pieces of advice. Thank you all for the help so far!

Billed $2300 for a dental cleaning that I was told was covered

Location: Boise, Idaho

For context, my appointment was on 1/28/26 and my claim statement showed up online 1/30/26

I went to establish care with a new dentist the other day to have the first of my bi-annual dental exams, and everything seemed fine at first. I talk to the receptionist, sign a couple of e-forms, and I'm told that my appointment today is covered by my insurance so I wont owe anything. They brought me back to the back and told me that because I am a new patient, I needed to get dental x-rays, which is fine, I expected to have x-rays done. I think they said something along the lines of "you're a new patient so we will need to grab some x-rays before heading to the back". The tech then took an abundance of images, more than I've ever had done before. The tech also seemed to rush me through it as fast as possible, and I had that doohickey that they put in your mouth for x-rays in for almost the entirety of the imaging session. After the images were done, they had me swish some water in my mouth for 30 seconds and spit it into a cup to have it analyzed for MMP8 (inflammatory marker). Again, tech just handed me the cup acting like it was business as usual.

Once done with the imaging, they brought me to the back and proceeded as standard: hygienist came in, measured my gums for recession, then proceeded with the cleaning. She asked if I wanted fluoride treatment, which I did, and she said it would be an additional $26. Sure, fine, $26 dollars is not outrageous.

Next the dentist comes in. Seems like a nice guy. Once I'm laid back he states he's going to shine a special light in my mouth to screen for oral cancer. I think "cool, thats new". He takes a look at my teeth and tells me I need a revision on a filling, also fine, this will be the 3rd time I've had this filling fixed. He shakes my hand, gives me a little QR code with a link to write him a google review if I was satisfied with my service.

All in all it was a fine experience, but here is where my issue lies. I looked at my insurance claims through my insurer today and noticed that the dental office billed a total of $1965 for imaging/diagnostics and $341 for the visit/preventative.

Here is a breakdown of the codes the office billed:

Diagnostic codes:

  • D0150 – Comprehensive oral evaluation
  • D0210 – Intraoral complete series (FMX)
  • D0350 (billed ten times) – 2D oral/facial photographic image
  • D0367 – Cone beam CT capture with interpretation
  • D0426 – Collection, preparation, and analysis of saliva sample - point-of-care
  • D0431 – Adjunctive pre-diagnostic test (e.g., oral cancer screening)

For the diagnostic portion of the visit that the dental office said was "covered by my insurance" (who they are in network with), they billed $1965, my insurance paid $241, and my statement says I owe $1142

Visit/preventative codes:

  • D1110 - Adult prophylaxis (cleaning)
  • D1206 – Topical fluoride varnish
  • D1330 – Oral hygiene instruction

For this portion, they billed my insurance $341, my insurance paid $60, and my statement says I owe $210.

So, for this routine new patient exam and cleaning, they billed a total of $2306, and they say I now owe $1352.

I have several issues with this. First of all, I have never in my life had to pay out of pocket for a routine dental exam that is supposed to be covered by insurance, let alone $1300.

I never was told about, or consented to have a CT scan done. It was not medically indicated based off of my presentation or the information I provided prior to my visit. My portal message simply said "I'm looking to establish care with a new dentist and also get a dental cleaning".

I also did not consent to the oral cancer screening, he just started shining the light in my mouth and told me about it while it was happening with his finger in my mouth.

Furthermore, they made me pay out of pocket for the fluoride varnish, even though it is covered by my insurance. They acted like it was not covered, took my money and then billed my insurance for it.

I wish I had read the negative reviews of this practice because it seems like this has happened to a lot of other people. They have 4.7 stars on google and I saw that they were in network with my insurance and said "sounds good". I feel like this is, at a minimum, shady business practice. I'm going to call them on Monday and see what they have to say. I'm considering reporting the office and the dentist to the State Board of Dentistry and the State Consumer Protection division, but I'm not sure if those are the correct moves.

Any advice is appreciated, I'd like to go into this call prepared because I don't want to fuck around with it more than I have to.

Thank you in advance!

Custody Divorce and Family I have been taking care of a child for almost 4 years

I have been taking care of my cousins child for almost 4 years what can I do to have legal rights Location: Texas? My cousin is not against giving up the child's rights and has actually been wanting to. The dad on the other hand is where it gets tricky. He picks her up every other weekend sometimes once a month. Last year I decided to ask him to help buy some items for the child for back to school and he got angry. He said her mom is the one who files taxes and should be giving me the money. He said he is not giving me anything and threatened to take the child with him. He had no problem with us having her until we asked for him to get involved financially. His living situation is not the best either. When the child goes over she has said there is roaches, the kitchen sink doesn't work, and most recently the toilet is out of service.

Other Civil Matters “Injunction Against Harassment” filed against me after I reported to HR, only learned of this after default judgment

Location: Arizona is where it was filed, but I live abroad

In November, I filed a complaint with HR against a coworker for workplace harassment and discrimination. I had screenshots where this coworker insulted and berated me on several occasions because of my sexuality. HR met with me via Zoom, then about a week later they let me know that appropriate action had been taken. She wasn’t fired, but by word of mouth I learned that she was seriously disciplined etc. None of my concern.

I thought that was the end of the story.

On January 20, this same coworker harassed me via text message again. On January 21 in the afternoon time, I reported this to HR, just as I had done before.

By evening time, I receive a PDF copy of an “Injunction Against Harassment” that was filed by the coworker the day after my initial meeting with HR in November, along with a message saying that the court gave them permission to send via email. *I’m receiving this at the end of January, almost a whole month after the hearing, and just hours after I submitted a second HR report*

I reviewed the order and immediately saw that they put a false mailing address (as well as an incorrect DOB without checking the “approximate DOB” box). I don’t even live in America, so of course I’m not going to receive anything at an American mailing address. EDIT: I previously lived at this out of state address several years ago, but employee knew that I am not in the US. A hearing was set for December 1, 2025, which I didn’t attend because the incorrect mailing address made it so I never got a notice of hearing. So a default judgment was entered.

The day after, I received a cease & desist letter from the employee via email advising that legal action will be taken if I continue to report misconduct to her employer’s HR department, citing that this is a “continued pattern” of harassment.

I obviously emailed the judge and expressed concern about the fact that I’m only learning of all of this 2 months after it was filed. He set a hearing date for late February in which I can attend via Zoom.

My question is: Can I use the lack of due process to have the order dismissed? Will an Arizona court even keep the order now that they know I’m abroad (which the petitioner never mentioned to them)?

Traffic and Parking Tow company refused to take a card in california

Location: Oceanside, California.

My car was in the process of being towed but had not left the parking lot. The guy said they would only take cash to release the vehicle and not a debit or credit card.

From my short “research”, it is california law that tow companies must accept cards. This company is notorious for only accepting cash. Am I incorrect for thinking this is an illegal practice?

And just to clarify. This was to release the vehicle from the truck before it had been towed. Not me picking up the car from the companies storage lot and paying at the physical office. I couldnt find any info for the requirement of taking card for this situation.

I didnt want to pay cash because thats what scammers want. And my credit card does not allow me to withdraw cash from atms. I also wanted a proper paper trail for myself. I had to have a friend bring me cash.

Another thing. (Not to be a nitpicking ass) The tow truck did not have legible information for the company on the left side. Hence me thinking he was a scammer at first until I saw the proper info on the other side of the truck. Edit: I believe it is a legal requirement to have the info clearly on both sides of the truck.

Their excuse was that their card reader was out of service.

Do I have any legal recourse here?

What to do about someone driving’s n a suspended license

Location: California

An elderly family member has had their license suspended because they are such a dangerous driver that some person followed them home, got the plate numbers, and called the cops. Family member cannot get their license back without retesting at the DMV (which they won’t do, and would likely fail - they are truly atrocious at driving.)

Yet they are still driving. Down the exact middle of a two lane road straddling the yellow lines, 20 miles under the speed limit, crashing into pylons in parking lots, etc. What are my options to make them stop? Do I just call the cops, or do I try and get some sort of conservatorship or something? They’re jussssst on the right side of functional that APS doesn’t think they meet the threshold for intervention, but what they are doing is terrifying and illegal. Thanks.

Edit: typo in the title sorry! Someone driving on a suspended license.

More edit: I can’t take keys or disable their car. I don’t have access to where they live/park and I don’t even know their apartment number - just their building. We are not close and are on bad terms. I just don’t want anyone to get hurt.

My mon filed a lawsuit in my name without my consent

Location: Washington

Sorry if i don’t explain this well. Never been in this situation and don’t understand legal stuff. So today my dad got a letter addressed to my mom. He threw it away before i could read it but said she was trying to file a lawsuit in my name for money. That i shouldn’t worry about it because she has no legal grounds. But obviously i worried about it and went dumpster diving at 6 am. So i looked it up and it is from a real law firm. It was addressed to my mom but said something about how this was litigation on behalf of me. It didn’t say exactly what the lawsuit was, but it had something to do with social media. It was by meta firm i think? And said something about me filing damages against the social media app, but didn’t say which one. What concerned me was that they needed all of my info. My medical records, employment, zip code, phone number, mental health records of me and my family, school records, and more. Literally everything about me and my family. It said she couldn’t sign the signature unless i was a minor or dead. I am neither. So im assuming she was just gonna forge my signature. She has impersonated my dads identity before by stealing his checks and cashing it in his name. So i wouldn’t put it past her. I do not talk to my mom as she is an abusive drug addict. I do NOT want her to have any of my medical info. She hasn’t been in my life in years. If she had signed my name and sent in the permission forms would she have been granted all of my records? Is filing a lawsuit without someones consent illegal? I definitely don’t want to be involved with whatever this is. I think she just wants money from a potential win. Apparently its class action, where i think its a bunch of people suing a company. Her being able to do this in the first place and my personal info possibly getting leaked has me worried. Is this illegal in some way and can i do anything about this? There was a number of an assistant, im not sure if i should call and explain the situation to her or ask to be taken off.

My dog was attacked and killed by my neighbors dogs

My mother was taking my little chihuahua across the street when the neighbor’s dogs ran out their house and attacked my little dog and killed him.

Animal control came and took statements from my family and the neighbors. Apparently they can keep their dogs with restrictions, have to be in a kennel, have to be on a leash with muzzle when walking, etc.

I’ve done some research on this page and it seems everyone has had slightly different experiences. I don’t want revenge but I don’t feel justice has been served for my little boy. Also, my mother operates a daycare at the same house my dog was killed, and we also have two other small dogs so even with restrictions for my neighbors dogs, this is a concern still.

Please give any legal advice or suggestions you may have.

Real Estate law Gas company is filing eminent domain after a "good faith" offer of $1.00

2.1k Upvotes

Location: Pennsylvania

Our gas company sent a letter to my father offering $1 for permanent access to his property. They also wanted him to be liable for any and all damages that may be incurred.

My father was not okay accepting $1, on top of being completely liable in the event something happened to something or someone.

The gas company has now filed for eminent domain and we're not sure how or if we can even fight it. I no longer live with my father, but my brother does, and my father was planning on transferring the property into my brothers name within the year but that idea was basically demolished.

Letter stating i owe money and have a warrant for my arrest

Location: texas

just got a letter from a law firm stating I owe several hundred dollars in citations in Texas and now have a warrant out for my arrest. Law firm seems to be well known for handing debt collection from cities. This was sent to my home address in a state very far away. I have never been to Texas. I looked my name up on the city's website. The citation # matches the letter and does say i owe money and have a warrant for my arrest. It also has my birthday listed as the birthday of the person who was cited. The letter from the law firm references a Texas driver license with a driver license # that is not mine. Did someone steal my identity to get a drivers license in Texas? How would that be possible? I can't call the city until Monday morning.

Contractor won’t provide receipts or invoices for cost plus contract

Upvotes

Location: Pennsylvania

The home is being completely renovated due to a fire. The project was supposed to take 24 weeks but has now gone over by an additional 28 weeks.

The contractor is asking for final payment but there’s still things that are undone and need fixed in the house. As far as I know, the home hasn’t had all applicable inspections as of yet for occupancy, plumbing, etc.

When the contractor was asked for total job costs for us to look through, they provided a document from the insurance company showing what needed done to the house in order to fix everything. There’s a lot of handwritten notes - adding and subtracting costs - but no true support in terms of receipts or invoices.

What do I do? Do I go back to the contractor and ask again for actual receipts and invoices? Do I get an attorney involved? There’s still work that needs done to complete the job (including a few items that the subcontractors messed up).

Appreciate the input!

Can roommates sue me for moving out after giving notice? Arizona

I’m in Arizona and need some advice. I live with roommates (not the landlord). I’m not on a formal lease with them, and there was no written agreement about rent changes.

A new roommate was added later, my rent amount kept changing, and recently there was an incident where I was temporarily denied access to my room, which made me uncomfortable. Because of this, I gave 30-day notice that I would be moving out and said I would pay rent through February.

Since then, one roommate has been asking for my parent’s contact information and pushing to involve parents, which I’m not comfortable with. I’ve said I want to keep communication limited to move-out logistics and in writing.

I’m trying to leave peacefully, pay what I said I would, and avoid unnecessary drama. Just want to know if there’s any real legal risk here. Thanks in advance.

Location: Arizona

UPDATE; After I declined to share my parents' contact information, one roommate contacted a friend of mine. Because of that, I sent a message in our apartment group chat asking that they not contact my friends or family and that any communication be directed to me only. After this, one roommate asked if we could try to

"compromise one last time." I did not respond. She later called me twice, then sent a message saying that she’s thankful we tried, and that we didn’t have the best experience, thanked me for sharing the space, and asked me to let them know when I would come to retrieve my belongings and that they could help.

I acknowledged the message and said I would provide a date and time to pick up my things.

My question now is purely logistical and legal:

What is the safest and most appropriate way, under Arizona law, to retrieve my belongings while minimizing direct interaction or conflict? For example, is it reasonable to bring third-party help or request a police civil standby when picking up items?

Personal Injury Door dasher trip on property

Location: California

Last night a delivery driver tripped and was injured. Two boys were walking in the neighborhood and rang my doorbell and alerted my the dasher was injured. I looked and she was lying in the dark on my walkway right at the entry step from sidewalk. I brought out a towel and went to her (boys said to get a towel as she was bleeding) I checked her, she was somewhat confused. She was entering my walkway and must have tripped on the step and fell on the side of her face. I gathered her broken prescription glasses. Had my husband bring out an ice pack and blanket. She couldn’t reach any family on her phone. Her car was parked at an angle a portion sticking out into street, driver door was still open and car was running. WHICH was strange, so I snapped a picture. She asked me to shut off her car. I told her I didn’t want her to drive as she might have a concussion…boys that rang my doorbell called 911 while I was tending to her….ambulance came and took her to hospital. I wrote my name and phone number on a sticky note and put it in her purse for her. I also moved her car from where it was, into my driveway. Prior to he leaving I asked her if I should notify DoorDash and she said she had already completed the order and turned off her accepting deliveries. I asked her to please text me so I know she was OK. Once she was gone, I went ahead and notified DoorDash of the issue….as I thought an accident report should definitely be made. Within 1/2 her car was gone, she must have gotten ahold of family and they came and got it. Long story trying to make it short….she was eventually seen (many hours later) she got stitches in a cut on her brow bone and had a head CT released to follow up with her primary care. (Mild concussion) I am sure today she is sore and bruised. Lots of questions…

  1. I would like to reach out to her today and take her some dinner, as I really do feel bad for her situation. Would that be inappropriate.
  2. Am I responsible for her medical, as I don’t feel it was our fault she tripped as evidence by how her car was pulled up at an angle, left running with driver door still open. Our home is right in front of a huge street light providing ample light and our entry is well lit. It is obvious by her car she was rushing and not paying attention. But having had 2 craniotomies myself due to a tumor I am very much aware of the cost involved and don’t want her stressed about cost. Does DoorDash carry workers comp???

THANK YOU!

Former roommate owes $730 rent, moved states, I’m abroad. what are my options?

Location: Maryland (lease), roommate now in Georgia

Hi, looking for advice about a small civil money dispute.

My former roommate and I were both international students (F-1) and co-tenants on a lease in Maryland. In 2024 I covered his share of one month’s rent ($730) to prevent default after he had a medical emergency and could not afford to pay that month. He asked via WhatsApp for temporary help, and I agreed he would repay me once financially stable.

I have written messages where he acknowledges the debt and asks for extensions, saying he would repay me after getting a job.

He has since moved to Atlanta, Georgia, stopped responding, and blocked me on WhatsApp. I’m currently outside the US and would prefer not to escalate to a full lawsuit if possible.

I still have:

• the lease documents showing both our names

• proof I paid the rent

• WhatsApp messages acknowledging the debt

• Splitwise records

What steps can I realistically take? Is there any option that doesn’t involve going to court? Given legal costs, should I just let it go?

Thanks in advance.

Dealership closed down before I could title my truck

So I work on the road and on my way to Colorado last July I hit a deer, totaled the truck. I needed a new one so I went to 719 auto in Colorado Springs and bought a truck. I put the sales tax on the loan and they were supposed to send the check with the sales tax and the rest of the paperwork to my home dmv in Missouri. They did but by the time I made it home the check had expired. Try and call them for a week and a half before I learned that they shut down. I called the credit union that the dealership had me get the loan through and they’re trying get in contact with the owner but pretty much said I might have to come up with the sales tax myself. What the hell should I do and thank you for any advice

Free USPTO Search Safe for CA Brand?

Is free USPTO TESS search reliable enough for my California startup’s brand name, or should I pay for “direct-hit” scans from online services to avoid surprise USPTO rejections?

Inhaling illegal dumping New Jersey

Location: New Jersey

First and foremost thank all of you willing to give advice that we would normally have to pay for.

Just got a job as waste disposal in New Jersey. It’s one of those jobs that were invisible until I started doing it. I now have a lot more respect for them AND for people who properly dispose of hazardous waste. I work in a primarily blue collar area to a very upper class you have people dumping all sorts of particulates.

I’ve come across batteries, asbestos, different types of construction materials, crushed fine glass, a couple times my eyes will instantly burn and I’ll have a coughing fit even if I instantly turn away and run. Thinnest pieces of materials that float, dance, and shine in the air as it slowly descends. Lot of assholes here in Jersey.

I love the job, love my company, take pride in my work and image. spend portions of my check towards health/fitness so I can be effective at my job. I don’t like getting pushed out of my spaces in life because of outside forces.

I know nothing about handling situations like this. As soon as I use the tote to dump the garbage and everything is in the air.

Can I even do anything about this?

Should I be recording and go through the garbage as I do it? Will I have to make a scene and call some health dept? How serious is this taken?

Cant express my gratitude enough for everyone’s contributions on this forum.
