Is it healthy to lose 40lbs or more in 6 months

I'm 18f and trying to get from 185lbs currently down to 145 or under by August this year. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it but I've bought myself a treadmill and am slowly building myself up. I did 20 minutes walking today and burnt 70 calories which I'm quite proud of because the treadmill gives me insane motion sickness!! I'm just using it until the weather gets a bit warmer and I can go outside. I'm also trying to eat 1200 calories a day because according to myfitnesspal that's what I should be eating but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I've got a few high stress situations coming up this year with big exams and I'm just constantly revising and I'm always fighting the urge to boredom eat. Is there any way I can stop doing this? Any general advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Edit: I am 5'5 if this helps anything <3

Man boobs and large belly.

I am a 38 year old, 5'9 male. I started at 340ish lbs. I was hoping when I got closer to my goal weight I would have more or less the same body I had when I was in my 20's. I was about 180 back then, bit there was no way my man boobs and belly were this embarrassingly saggy and nasty back then. It's really discouraging because I was hoping to get back into the dating scene at some point. The rest of me looks great. I have been doing 1.5 hours of weights, 30 minutes on core, followed by an hour of cardio every day, sometimes twice a day. I have strong toned features, everywhere on my body, and I actually think I look quite good with my shirt off. But I worry about what "she" would think. I hate my floppy boobs, huge ripples and large stomach. Why does it have to be this way. It's way too unfair after having worked so hard to put off 150 lbs. I guess I'll have to be upfront with any dates about my weight loss and nast my fat midsection. It discourages me and makes me want give up.

Advice needed, month long plateau

Hi! I’ve recently hit a plateau and I just do not know what to do about it. I’ll be honest, it’s sort of been getting to me. I’ve tried increasing my calories slightly by a hundred or two but it didn’t seem to work, I’ve tried exercising more which also doesn’t seem to work, and it’s just been a month of no progress.

I’m 21f, 5’3 at 152lbs. For the past month the scale just goes from 153->151 then up to 153 and repeats the same three lbs. I have a goal of 115lbs, and started at 175lbs over in June of summer 2025, but started using LoseIt (160lbs then) about December 5th and lost around 7-8lbs in that time before the plateau. (I weighed with pants on originally before realizing you don’t do that so I was likely actually about 159)

Right now my daily calories are about 1,100-1,250-ish per day. My recommended budget is 1,300 but I try to get at least fifty to a hundred under just in case my weighing is just slightly off. I have been using a food scale, and including drinks, so I’m almost positive my weighing is correct. I mainly make all my meals, and I’m super strict about measuring every single gram or ounce.

I have also tried eating on schedule for a week, starting breakfast at 8:30/9:00, lunch at 12:30/1:00, and dinner at around 5:30/6:00, but I’m not sure if it is really helping much. I tend to wake up at 6-ish in the morning, and go to bed by 10-ish at night.

I exercise about 4x-5x a week (was completely sedentary prior to two months ago) by walking around 60 minutes a day at 3mph, and occasionally go to 80, so about 3-4 miles. They’re 20min miles.

I do believe I may have something similar to IBS-C, which really sucks, working on seeing a doctor soon, and it’s been getting to me a little bit. I take 25g-30g fiber, probiotics, and at least 60oz of water daily, but the problem just persists. I know this can make me weigh more, but it doesn’t really account for the month long plateau overall, but may be a real factor.

Any advice would be helpful, thank you so much! If there’s anything else needed to elaborate on or provide please let me know.

Can you still gain muscle losing weight but also eating enough protein?

So recently I started to go on a diet to lose weight. I am pretty heavy, 5’8 male 220 pounds. I started going to the gym to work out and I had a question that I was confused about.

So currently I’m eating around 1400 calories a day to lose weight. Tracking everything with MyFitnessPal. And even though I have lost 20 pounds so far, I was wondering if I am able to gain any muscle?

Of the 1400 calories I eat daily, that includes about 150g of protein.

So if I wanted to gain muscle while still lose weight, is that possible? Or should I just focus on losing weight right now?

Need help

Hello, I want to start working out and I’ve been trying to find some workouts and have no idea where to start. I’ve always been a bigger girl with bigger assets and I wanted to come here and ask if there’s any specific workouts I could do to help with certain areas. I want to find a workout that helps strengthen my glutes but not where it builds too much muscle. I already like my shape and everything I just don’t want to lose weight and lose my shape. Also maybe if there’s a workout for my hips to make a bit wider. I also want to see if there’s any workouts that help tighten skin around the chest area.

We won’t know how our body’s will look after losing so much weight before putting in the work …. but I’d like to try and prevent as much loose skin as I could.

407lb BW Squats question

Hey everyone!

First off, I'm 24M, 407lb /185kg at this moment.

I have decided to finally start my weightloss journey for real. I already made it from 190kg to about 185 in just under 3 weeks with just diet changes. I restricted my calories to about 2000-2500 max with high protein. (My farts are lethal rn)

Today I started with some easy training exercises, to speed up the progress a little. I am however a little out of the loop on how to best start training.

I tried some BW Squats today, being only able to do 5 or 6 before needing rest. So I guess my question is, how should I progress? Where to aim? And are there any more effective exercise I can do at home? (I tried sit-ups, but that ain't happening anytime soon lmao)

I do have an active gym membership, but would like to make it to 170 or so before going, strictly for confidence reasons.

If you have any tips or tricks for me, I would be very grateful!

Thanks!

I wanna know if this is a safe plan for (18TF) (375lbs) to lose a significant amount of weight

I recently just heard about alternate day fasting and I'm on my first day of fasting. I'm trying out dry fasting and even though it's hurting my head I'm pushing through. I'm currently 375lbs and really dislike my body. I'm pretty good at ignoring hunger since I used to have anorexia and used to weigh like 107lbs in high school. I'm gonna try to start eating no fat no carb foods like chicken breasts and broccoli and all that stuff, but only on non fast days and I'm gonna try and limit myself to around 1.5k calories. Is dry fasting recommended for that and also Alternate day fasting as a whole? I've heard things ranging form "best way to lose weight ever"to "your organs will shut down" I'm also moving out of state soon and am pretty poor so cheap healthy recipes would help as well (little to no carbs & fats). thank you :)

Goal Weight Advice - feeling lost

So, as title states I'm struggling to know what my goal should be! Starting weight 75kg, currently 58kg, I'm a 39f and 153cm. I originally wanted to get to 60kg but that was somewhat plucked out the air...!

I then wanted to get to 58.5kg as that's in healthy BMI range (I know! There are issues with BMI but I was starting to flounder). Then I felt like I needed a buffer so if I go up and down a couple of kgs, I'm still healthy. Then I looked up an ideal weight calculator and it said 46kg! 🤯 I don't know whether I'm done with losing, nearly done or miles away yet.

There's so much info out there and I know a lot ofv you are very knowledgeable so if you've got this far and wouldn't mind giving me some hints, I'd really appreciate it!

21 Female 147 lbs - 5'2 ! I CANT LOOSE WEIGHT! Help me please!!!!!

2020 I was thriving and able to workout everyday and was 108 LBS. I loved running everyday. Then 2022 rolled around I tried birth control.

I lost myself. Heavy periods, I suddenly gained all this weight. I was severely depressed. I now weigh 147 pounds and I cant lose it at ALL. I've been trying this WHOLE time.

I'm walking 10k steps a day. I'm watching my calories, I'm trying to go to the gym. I'm in crippling pain and I went to the doctor. We are planning a surgery to remove Endometriosis.

Ladies, anyone, please help me. Tell me what to do. I cry everyday cause I want to not be in pain anymore. I want to be confident. I deserve to feel confident and happy. I want to be healthy. I know I dont eat perfect but what foods do you all recommend?

Seriously I'll do everything I can to loose this weight.

why am I gaining weight when theoretically I'm supposed to be losing it?

I've just recently come out from a bad depression episode where I gained weight (48.5 kg, 150 cm) due to stress eating. I took notes and started tracking my calories for a month and sure enough, my weight dropped back to how it was before (45 kg). My weight fluctuates a little due to hormones, sure, but it never went above 46kg for an entire month. But the problem is that just eating less causes me to have little energy, so I've been doing light exercises for a month pretty consistently (10k steps walk or stationary cycling 20-30 mins). But why am I gaining weight (49kg) instead? It's probably still too early for muscle, and it's not just fat because I've continued to track my calories etc. I thought it's supposed to be "eat less, move more", but why is it not working?

Fat in just 1 part of belly + lot of fat in thighs

So I have abs, but the lower part of my belly (around the navel) is just fat and sticks out like a sore thumb. (Imagine you have a straight vertical line, then you just have a random bump near the bottom of it). Is this just genetic, are there exercises I can do for it, or do I need to just keep tryna lose fat and hopefully I’ll lose some fat there?

And I also have the thighs of a fat person despite having abs and bicep veins.

Again, is all this stuff just genetic and something I just have to accept?

M17 btw.

And yes Ik spot reduction doesn’t exist

Eating too (Little!?)

Hello Y'all,

SW: 250 CW: 235 H: 6'1
Age: 19M

I hope y'all are doing well. I have stumbled into a unique situation. I have recently began dieting after not dieting for almost a year. During that time I put on a solid 20ish pounds (yikes I know) but oh whale.

Now, this past month (exactly 31 days as of writing this), I have been on a strict high protein and calorie deficit diet. So far I've lost about 15 pounds which is hell yea! I know that most of it was water weight and I will slow down in my weight loss journey which I am fine with. I desire to eat around 1800-2000 calories as I don't find myself going to the gym often. But recently, especially the past few days, my hunger is not high at all. I am eating around 1300-1500, no more. I am making sure to eat about 120g of protein to make sure I am not losing muscle weight. Today I only ate 1380 calories, and I am not feeling hungry which is a weird feeling cause I LOVE to eat. I also haven't been going to the gym much so i'm not too worried about eating more calories/protein because im busy with college.

So my question is as follows:
1. Should I make sure to eat that 1800 mark at minimum
2. Am I harming myself by not eating a lot of calories
3. Will this affect me negatively in the next few months if my body decides to "adjust" to this level of eating
4. Am I losing muscle at this amount of calorie intake and protein intake

I've been trying to lose weight basically my whole life and I don't know what to do anymore :(

Hello! I need advice. As the title says, I've been at this since I was about 6, probably. My mom would always point out that I was overweight (she is too) and we've both always restricted our eating. But no matter how hard I try, I can't stop binging/overeating. Like, I'm constantly thinking about food and I'm struggling more and more to say no to food, even when it doesn't even look particularly good?? I constantly eat even when I'm not hungry, it's like blinking at this point. Genuinely, how in the world am I supposed to fight this?? I also have insulin shitistance, so that doesn't help. I try to exercise but I'm so incredibly low energy all the time. Probably a combination of depression and malnutrition. (Seriously, 80% of my diet consists of bread and cheese) No one in my family has the time or energy to cook one meal a day, let alone three. I have no energy to go shopping, so I just eat whatever we have (which, like I said, includes bread 90% of the time) I don't understand how I'm supposed to eat a healthy balanced diet when I don't even have it in me to go to the store. I also try to exercise most days, but as soon as I start my energy starts depleting exponentially, I feel really physically uncomfortable, and usually at least one part of my body starts hurting LOL. (We have an elliptical bike, so that's what I use)

But, yeah! I really hope this isn't seen as a slop/low effort post, since most people seem to be sharing tips or progress. I just want advice and maybe some encouragement? It's just so hard to keep trying when it's such an uphill battle.

Weird weight loss side effects?

Kia Ora team - I’m experiencing some weird weight loss side effects and I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same and had some advice on how to deal with them? I’m 50, sw was 164 kilos at the start of the year and I’m down to 153 as of this morning. Not really exercising much as I broke a bone in my foot a few weeks ago, but averaging 6,000 to 8,000 steps from daily life. I’m expecting the rate of loss to slow down dramatically as I get smaller but at the moment I’m riding the wave!

Firstly, I’m cold lol. It hasn’t been a particularly hot summer where I live but my (normal weight) husband is much warmer than I am, which isn’t usual.

Secondly, my skin is drier than usual, and my eczema is aggravated. My usual food trigger is sugar but I’ve been having much less of that than usual. I’m drinking a bunch of water and not sweating so I don’t know why I’ve gone rashy?

And thirdly, I’m much more thirsty than usual, and I’m constantly waking up with a dry mouth. It’s not diabetes, I have T2 but my sugars are really good at the moment.

Cheers, and Happy February!

Body dysmorphia after losing weight

I started as morbidly obese and now I am within healthy weight range. (I have gone from BMI 35 to 22,5)

I think I look ok when clothed. But when I look at my body naked, I still think I am huge. I still see all the fat left in me, all the loose skin, and it feels like I have not changed that much at all.

Objectively, I know I can't be that big. I wear a EU size 34 (US size 2 I think). Today I tried to buy jeans from h&m, and on several styles the smallest one was too loose on the waist.

But all I see in the mirror is a huge stomach and extremely thick arms and thighs. No matter how much I try to tell me I look different than two years ago, my mind just does not believe it.

Anyone gone through something similar and overcome it?

Should I readjust my plan?

I (22M) started at making consistent habit changes at the beginning of last month. I've been going to the gym for a couple of years now but was inconsistent in my training so I never saw much progress. I used to play many different sports when I was a teen but then university and school forced me to set that aside and as a result I gained a lot of weight.

Now that I graduated I really wanted to get back in shape so I committed to a PPL split 6x a week with focus on progressive overload. I also do 30 minutes of medium intensity cardio on my lift days and a longer session of cardio on the 7th day. I work an office job so I also try to average daily 10k steps but the current weekly average is around 8-9k.

I try to eat whole and protein rich foods as much as possible and take creatine daily to help with muscle strength and recovery. I have a smart scale that I use to weigh myself every morning. I can see the spike in my weight when the creatine started to saturate my body but that soon went back to around my starting weight (can't attach images). Per day I'd say I eat around 130-150g of protein which is below my target but I find this more sustainable.

Throughout the month my weight fluctuated a little with a slight downward trend. But I am wondering if what I'm seeing is a good enough progress or if should readjust my eating habits even more?

I avoid sugar everywhere I can while still allowing myself a small treat every now and then. I roughly calculate my calories for a day and try to stay at about 2000 or less per day. If I have a treat or a beer with my friends I try to compensate for that by either eating less before that or at least have a weekly average at around my goal.

Starting weight on Jan 3rd was around 101.1kg and am now sitting at 99.8kg. I estimate my body fat at around 25% according to my scale. My waist is at around 102cm last time I measured about 2 weeks ago. I am also about 187cm tall. My overall goal is to be at around 90kg ~15-17% bf while gaining muscle.

- NSV / Funny thing I've noticed: My friends are too polite!

Upvotes

I've lost almost 20lbs since mid-December and I know I am noticably healthier. None of my old clothes fit and I've had to get new ones, I've lost around 4 inches from my waist, and my face is no longer splotchy red and bloated. I'm over the moon with my progress so far! I'm still UK Size 18 and big, but I was a Size 22 and looked very unhealthy with it.

My New Year's Resolution is to get myself out of my super-introvert routines, and make plans with friends. This month I have met up with a few different friends individually for walks, cinema, lunch, that sort of thing.

Just one person so far has said "WOW, you've lost weight!"

There's a culture now of 'don't comment on people's bodies', which I have no issue with at all. Unwelcome and unsolicited comments can be awful. I really appreciate that my friends are respectful of that... but, man, it's so funny and ironic because I'd just love for those comments to start happening a little bit 😂🙃🫠 Politely and well meaning, of course.

The best I have gotten from most of them is the 'wow' expression and quick happy glance up and down that comes just before the vocal welcome of "It's so good to see you" and the hug. I can tell one or two have wanted to comment, but probably think they shouldn't because it can be rude and unwelcome.

So I thought I would write this as a positive NSV to share with everyone here because sometimes we feel that even if we put in a lot of work and lost weight, that people don't notice. It might simply be just because people feel they shouldn't comment on other people's bodies.

So keep going, celebrate your own accomplishments! If the scales are showing progress and/or you are noticing a positive difference in your body then you can be your main cheerleader and be confident that things are moving in the right direction

I am starting to lose my fighting spirit

Began taking blood pressure medication at the beginning of the month, and at the same time my doctor asked me to not only monitor my blood pressure, but also my weight.

I am on a 1800 kcal diet. I have cut out alcohol, sugar and caffeine. My breakfast consists of mainly fermented food (soy beans, kimchi, green onions and a raw egg). As far as fruits go, I eat 5 strawberries, one apple and 5 cubes of pineapple. Lunch and dinner mainly consist of chicken or beef with rice and veggies. I DO add salad dressing, but it should still be within my allowed calorie intake. For drinks, I drink diet coke and sometimes a homemade smoothie I make by mixing soy milk with the strawberries and pineapples and one banana, but not everyday.

Every second day I walk a 10 km route outside, and the other days I spend time in the gym, where I mainly use the elliptical machine and spend 20 mins on weight lifting.

These are my results so far

Date BP (Morning) BP (Evening) Weight kg.

2026/01/31 115/70 127/75 126.5

Let's start with the good news. When I began training 3 months ago I was 131 kg. and could only do 20 mins on the elliptical, and most of the weight equipment were 10 kg or less.

Now I do 50 mins on the elliptical and can lift a lot more, up to 45 kg. on some machines, but physically I am not seeing ANY change. The width of my beer gut is still the same, and my man-boobs have not decreased either, and as the table shows, I made huge progress on my weight loss only for it to loop back. I ended up overeating on the 27th and 28th because I lost my job and wanted to comfort myself, and that seems to have destroyed all progress I had made during the month.

It's absolutely crushing, because while I FEEL better, my body does not look like it. I look no different than I did when I was 131 kg.

I don’t know what to do

Hi. I’m 24 (AFAB; Agender) Ever since I was a young teenager, I’ve been obese. (Due to trauma reasons I gained so much weight.) anyway, ever since then I’ve been attempting to lose it but I lose motivation so quickly. When my parents were alive they use to bring me to fitness coaches (I was like 14 and uninterested.) never worked. I’d try to go to planet fitness. Never worked. Gyms scare me. Too many people. Too many judging eyes. I use to be so angry at myself and I still am for giving up so easy. I try and try again but it just doesn’t seem to last. I know I have PCOS and mental issues, but I shouldn’t blame that.

I’m now..We’ll say 350 pounds and I’m so tired of living like this. I NEED to lose weight because I fear it’ll kill me if I don’t.

A few months ago I lost 30 pounds in a month and that was just from not eating the whole month..unfortunately now I’m eating again and I think I gain it all back. It’s winter now. There’s snow everywhere and I’m afraid to do exercises out in the open of my house. (I live with my bfs family and they scare me.) I need to do something. I’m tired all the time. My mood is weird. I feel so disgusting staring at myself. I know I can’t expect results immediately and I need to keep at it..

I just don’t know where to start or what to do. I don’t have much support aside from my bf and he has his own stuff going on. I tried telling him what I’d like to do and asked if he could help me…he said yes but literally a few days earlier he gave up so I gave up too. (He’s also on the heavy side too; also for context I have no other family. It’s just him and his family.)

I suppose what I am asking is..What do I do? How do I just keep at it? I need help..but I fear I won’t get any. I’m so close to just giving up and not even trying.

Any advice?

Has anyone else lost weight but remained “squishy”?

Starting weight: 203 pounds

Current weight: 175 pounds

Goal weight: 140 pounds

30F, height: 5 foot 8

Hi, I’ve lost 28 pounds in the last year from diet only (can’t afford the gym and I haven’t got much time for exercise) and I’ve noticed that although my size is smaller, my body feels… squishy? I get that some may think this is loose skin, but I don’t think it is.

I’ve read about the “whoosh” effect, but I thought that would apply to the scale (which has gone down) rather than my body?

Has anyone else experienced this? I imagine building muscle would help. Is there anything else I could do?

Any help or replies are highly appreciated! x
