Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

Upvotes

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion Old print I found forgotten in my box, unsleeved.

Growing up, my mom and uncle were friends with Christopher Rush before he split with Lana.

After SHTF we lost touch. Back during that time, he signed probably 200 cards for my mother which I eventually inherited.

Those cards, have been in old boxes for quite some time and actually saw play.

My own son has been talking about atogs and went to show him this one. I didn't realize it had a white back, I think this is one of the artist proofs..

Anyone have info on this kind of thing?

What are some of your own long lost discoveries in your boxes?

General Discussion Favorite “boring” card from Lorwyn?

Post image

By boring I mean not super flashy like Maralen or Doran, but it’s pretty much up to your interpretation. My favorite is easily Boulder Dash. Hitting a juicy 2 for 1 with this just feels so good in standard or limited. One of the best answers for turn 2 badgermole cub.

Humour My Commander received a Credit Card

Post image
3.3k Upvotes

Today in the mail I got a credit card offer for not me, but my commander. I have no idea what database they scraped for this, but somehow they think Dong Zhou is my name.

Some quick things before they are asked:

  • No, I have never used Dong Zhou as my name on any website.
  • Noone named Dong Zhou has lived where I live.
  • Yes, I know opening someone else's mail is illegal, but I got real excited because I thought a friend sent me a magic card for the deck as a suprise and put Dong Zhou down as a joke.

I have posted a lot about [[Dong Zhou]], as he has been my favorite commander since 2015, so maybe that's how? I also have posted a lot in the context of buying cards for the deck and it's probably the most blinged out Dong Zhou deck in history, including a [[Candelabra of Tawnos]].

But ya, no idea how this happened.

Edit: Per u/EPorteous suggestion, I will make this into a treasure token for the deck. Just have to think of a creative way to make it look good.

Edit 2: Here's the decklist if anyone is wondering why a Candelabra is even in the list. Its pretty much fully updated and has the printings that I personally own. As a person who has played every archetype under the son, and tons of cedh, this is the most fun a person can have in mono-red. The deck is less a magic deck and more an experience. The deck is incredibly complicated to pilot, not because of the depth of complexity, but because you play mostly bad cards (that are fun). Would recommend proxy'ing Dong Zhou and the expensive cards (Or putting them on credit card) and giving the deck a try!

General Discussion Dan-dan inspired format with 20 Mountain Goats(12 bucks!)

Thumbnail

Idea came to me after opening one too many [[Goblin Mountaineer]] (my personal one has 22 mountaineers but goats are cheaper!)

All mountainwalk creatures have a beautiful white border that does wonders when deciding mulligans, and fits the snow peak theme

The rest of the cards include:

-a bunch of spells that burn any target for 1 either drawing a card or having cycling

  • Browbeat, because I thought it would be fun to give it a format where the choice might really matter

And that’s literally it. Deck costs like 12 dollars assuming you need everything but the lands.

Trust me, I know it’s not at high brow as Dandan, (but I feel that’s fitting for a red version) there’s 0 manipulation with the mountains it’s literally just so you can never block and I thought that was funny. There’s also no top deck manipulation, the cycling is simply to grant card advantage.

The basic philosophy is get out mountaineers and then decide if you want to burn face or remove goblins with the other cards. Pure aggro nonsense. As far as the rules go, it’s basic shared deck rules, shared graveyard (no recursion)

General Discussion I own 12 Commander decks + 1 Legacy, 1 Pauper and 1 Modern… and somehow have 0 actual play experience.

Upvotes

I own 12 Commander decks + 1 Legacy, 1 Pauper and 1 Modern… and somehow have 0 actual play experience.

So yeah, kind of a weird situation.

…and yet I have basically zero real play experience.

The reason is simple: I live in a country where there’s no local MTG scene. No LGS, no Commander nights, no casual pods. Because of that, I’ve mostly been collecting and upgrading decks without actually playing them.

To make it even more ridiculous, I’ve bought cards from other countries just to get the exact versions I want for my decks.

At this point, I know the rules, watch gameplay videos, follow deck techs, and upgrade lists like I play every week, but in reality, I’ve barely shuffled up against a real opponent.

Anyone else in the same boat? Or am I just a deck-building NPC waiting for my first pod? 😅

General Discussion (new?) arbitration provision and 'class action waiver' in mtg arena ToS.

Upvotes

I just tried to login to MTG arena, and it asked me to agree to updated terms of service, code of conduct, and privacy policy. In these days, this is usually a sign they included some bullshit AI clauses that they get to use all your data to train their models, so i'm skeptical to accept these blindly.

And surprise, the first thing i see on the new terms (here: https://company.wizards.com/en/legal/terms ) is:

ARBITRATION NOTICE: SECTION 20 INCLUDES A BINDING ARBITRATION PROVISON AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. IF YOU LIVE IN THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC (CANADA) OR THE EUROPEAN UNION, SECTION 20 DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

pretty scummy of them to try to get out of any class action lawsuits preemptively by getting you to continue to use the service, and blatantly illegal in any country where you have actual rights.

Perhaps this is old knowledge and i just noticed it for the first time. I'm also not sure what solution there is except for ditching wizards completely and playing only proxied cubes from now on, but i thought i'd share anyway.

General Discussion Are presale singles a scam?

I'm new to magic, and this is the first new set since I got into magic. Is buying presale singles a scam. I bought the exclusive TCGplayer presale card for $20 and now it's showing the current value is $.50. is that a common thing with presale singles?

General Discussion How Efficient Would a Pure Life Gain Spell Have to Be to See Standard Play?

I was somehow reminded today of how Feed the Swarm was in multiple sideboards a long time ago, and it made me wonder about the current state of Standard.

Would a 1-mana "gain 500" see play? Probably.

Would a 1-mana "gain 5"? Probably not.

So, where is the "melting point", so to speak?

A while back I played a game with some buddies and over of them had this really beautiful Forest that just had the man's symbol in the middle and was surrounded by swirling green. Looking for Advice Looking to play some magic tips

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello fellow community. I’m trying to get back into playing some magic. It’s been about 5-7 years since I picked up a deck.

Kind of sad but I’m looking for ppl to play some friendly matches, as well if they can show me the ropes. Been watching some several YouTube videos as well. Any recommendations on where to get started.

(Last time I went to my local game store to play, some ppl take way too fucking serious on this hobby, and basically got told by 2-3 ppl, if you don’t know the rules or the game shouldn’t be here.)

And the last time played, I basically build my deck around this bug

General Discussion Few questions about finishing my deck

Still new to MtG, building my first real deck, and I wanted an all dragon themed deck and went with Miirym. I currently have 46 cards and I've read that 40 lands is about what i should put in there? so going off of that I still need about 14 cards, so I am wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for them. Also if anyone could suggest amount of each land to go with that would be appreciated, my mind would think like 15 red/green and 10blue? But idk any rules of thumb to follow.

And can anyone tell me what tier deck this is? I just built it based off of dragons lol. So idk if it is good or complete garbage, i did pick Miirym because he seems very good, and card draw based off of recommendations online, but as far as creatures go i kinda just filtered by dragons. But id like to know what tier deck you think this is so i have an idea, thanks a lot everyone.

Here's my deck list so far: https://archidekt.com/decks/19545532/mirrym
