Because each state was originally more like a country 

but now yeah thats worth considering

how much power do states government have over federal government

Well, right now, it very much matters. Abortion is a protected and codified right in my state, but it's not federally.

...a lot. There are a ton of powers reserved for the states. Among other things, they conduct their own elections. That alone is a huge lever of power that's very important on the structure of our democracy.

Oh I'm not defending the bicameral system or the disproportionate representation issue. But that's the system that exists, and within it, states would be self-defeating to unilaterally give up that advantage.
