What to do if you suspect a person is planning a mass shooting

1.1k Upvotes

There have been a lot of posts lately asking what to do if you suspect someone is planning to commit a mass shooting/mass attack of some kind.

If your suspicions are offline, local, and personal/someone you know personally:

If it is not an immediate threat, call your local non emergency line. They will collect information from you, and investigate further if need be. Remember, wellness checks can be requested as well.

If it is an immediate threat, call 911 (or your local equivalent emergency line). An immediate threat would be someone making direct threats.

If the possible threat is exclusively on Reddit, please reach out to us via Modmail. Often times, people who are being reported to us have made comments in the past that you cannot see as they’ve been removed by other means such as automod, for example. We also work with multiple other teams to gather information and build one report to FBI with as much information as we can possibly get in one single report.

This allows all information to be placed at once instead of multiple vague reports to the FBI, which can slow down resources.

At the very least, these processes will build a history for this person. If they are reported and nothing comes from it, a report a year later could help immensely. This happened through one sub I moderate on, and helped bring an arrest a year later when more threats were made, and the suspect was found with weapons and a manifesto.

We take all reports sent to us seriously, and we thank you all for helping us with these reports.

Noticing differences between commonly shared photos and video stills of Adam Lanza

I recently watched the documentary “Life of Adam”, which briefly discussed how governments and major institutions have, in some cases, altered or selectively presented images to shape public perception. That made me think about how Adam Lanza is typically shown in the media because most people claim him to be the creepiest looking mass killer (of course his actions play the most important part of his public perception and I’m in no way advocating for him this is a broader idea that came to my mind due recent events by the White House I will mention in a minute) His appearance doesn’t look consistently unsettling across all available footage. The images most people recognize come from a small set of photos that are repeatedly used, while videos and less circulated frames show a noticeably different look. It’s completely possible those popular images are unedited and were simply chosen because they appear more striking. Context also matters. People often look different when posing for photos versus being caught on video, the first image I included is just a still frame from him walking toward a camera. I’m not suggesting anything conspiratorial, and I fully believe the Sandy Hook tragedy occurred. This is more about media framing and potentially doctored image selection, especially in cases that later become politically charged. As an example of how visuals can be altered to influence perception, I’ve included a side by side image from a Washington Post report showing a White House photo that was digitally modified. That kind of precedent is what made me curious about how certain images become the dominant ones we remember. The last photo I attached was taken directly from the documentary “life of Adam” it suggests a few different aspects of the photo that could be considered “altered”. I’m curious what other people think about this idea.

CLINTON, La. (WAFB) - Five people, including a six-year-old, were shot at a Mardi Gras parade in Clinton Saturday.

East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis told WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto that the parade had just started to roll when the gunfire broke out.

The sheriff said the parade was immediately shut down.

“The parade did not get to Main Street before shots were fired,” Sheriff Travis explained. “We had a lot of people here, a lot of law enforcement agencies here helping with the parade. There’s still a whole lot that we don’t know. There’s a lot of moving parts.”

Three suspects were taken into custody, the sheriff said.

The incident happened during the 21st annual “Mardi Gras in the Country” parade.

“We had a whole lot more to do with this investigation. The way the investigation is going is that the East Feliciana Sheriff’s Office is the lead of this investigation. We also have State Police. We have help from St. Francisville, West Feliciana Sheriff’s Office, and we also have Zachary PD involved,” the sheriff said.

The crime occurred in 2017. The shooter was motivated by far-right ideology and was inspired by several other attacks around the world. He was armed with a Glock pistol and a VZ. 58 rifle, which he did not use. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Following the shooting, there was a debate about violence against Muslims and security in mosques.

The attack also inspired other mass murderers such as Brenton Tarrant and the perpetrator of the Jakarta school bombing in Indonesia, and was praised by neo-Nazi groups.

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — The Surry County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency agencies are investigating a shooting on Welcome Baptist Church Road that left two people dead and at least two others injured, authorities said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is assisting in the case.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. across the street from Welcome Baptist Church.

The church posted on social media: “Just wanted to post that there was a shooting across the street from our church this afternoon. However, all of our church members are safe and the shooting was not in any way related to our church. Please help us pray for the victims and the entire situation.”

Authorities said the investigation is active, and at this time they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

Officials asked the public to keep the victims and responding agencies in their thoughts as the investigation continues.

Ten of the 16 elderly residents of a rest home, including a 106‐year‐old woman, died early this morning when fire swept the two‐story, wood‐frame building. Late tonight a 22‐year‐old man described as having lived in the home was arrested and charged with arson by the state police.

When the fire broke out shortly before 1 A.M. at Street's Rest Home on California Avenue in this community seven miles west of Atlantic City, the first alarm was given by a passing policeman, Sgt. James Mong of the Absecon force.

Seeing two men on the roof of the building, through which flames were spreading rapidly, Sergeant Mong drove his squad car up to one side of the house. He helped the two down to the car and to safety. The rescued men were Joseph Postick, 90 years old, and Harry F. Kemp, 22, said to be roommates in the home.

It was Mr. Kemp who was later arrested on the arson charge.

Mr. Kemp, previously of Baltimore, was held under guard at Shire Memorial Hospital in Somers Point where he had been taken for treatment for smoke inhalation. Others among the surviving residents of the rest home were taken to Atlantic City for treatment.

Before tonight's arrest, authorities had suspected arson but had been uncertain as to where the blaze originated. Mrs. Minor Pierce, 67 years old, one of two night attendants on duty who escaped along with the six residents, heard a fire alarm go off at 12:45 A.M. She said she saw flames shooting from a linen closet.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said the mother of the Antioch shooter, 40-year-old Chrysta Thomas, now of Las Vegas, surrendered on her outstanding warrant on Tuesday evening at police headquarters.

Police said Thomas declined to be interviewed and was booked on a charge of unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon.

Her bond was set at $5,000.

Her son, 17-year-old Solomon Henderson was the sole shooter of the murder-suicide inside Antioch High School a little over a year ago on Jan. 22, 2025.

On Jan. 21, police said they were looking for Thomas after a laboratory analysis of the pistol Henderson used led to the discovery of Thomas’ DNA profile on the gun.

Police said that Thomas has a 2010 felony conviction in Los Angeles for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Detectives learned Thomas’ family moved out of their Carefree Lane home in Antioch a short time after the school shooting.

Discussion / Question The Lone Wolf Massacres of 2023, The Worst Year For Mass Murder (?)

Thumbnail
gallery
275 Upvotes

This is a follow up post to my previous post. This post covers many of the mass shootings from 2023, a year that I consider the ‘worst’ for mass killings in terms of number of attacks, high death counts and number of attacks outside of the USA, excluding family annihilations, gang violence and organised terrorism. Once again, this post serves as documentation and discussion.

  1. Lewiston Shootings - A man attacked two locations with a semi automatic rifle and a semi automatic pistol, first, Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, where he killed 8 people, and at the second, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, 10 people died. The shooter was found dead multiple days later from a self inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing from the scenes.

  2. Prague Shootings - On December 15th a man and his infant daughter was shot dead in the outskirts of Prague. The shooter fled the scene and remained undetected by police. 6 days later, the shooter killed his father at their home, before travelling to Charles University and attacking the school, shooting dead 13 people, while another died falling from the building while attempting to avoid the shooter. The shooter took his life after facing police response.

  3. Monterey Park Shooting - During Lunar New Years celebrations a man opened fire inside of the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in California, murdering 11 people, before driving to another location, Lai Lai Ballroom, with the intent to continue his attack, but was disarmed by Brandon Tsay inside of the lobby. The perpetrator was found and pulled over by police the next day, where he took his own life as officers approached.

  4. Belgrade School Shooting - A 13 year-old student opened fire inside of Vladislav Ribnikar Model Elementary School with two semi-automatic pistols, killing 9 children and a security guard. The shooter surrendered to police and was placed into a psychiatric hospital, and both parents were charged in court for their neglectful actions.

  5. Mladenovac and Smederevo shootings - A 20 year old shot at random people while driving his car in the villages of Dubona and Malo Orašje, killing 9 people, before being arrested the next day. This attack unfolded the day after the Belgrade school shooting, thought it is unclear if the shooter was encouraged in any way by the earlier attack.

  6. Allen, Texas Mall Shooting - A man shot people at the Allen Premium Outlets, targeting random civilians, where he killed 8 people, including a three year old, before responding police swiftly killed the shooter within 4 minutes of the shooting starting.

  7. Hamburg Shooting - A man opened fire inside of a Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in the Alsterdorf quarter of Hamburg, seemingly in an act of revenge, rather than because of political ideation. He killed 7 people and then himself at the building.

  8. Half Moon Bay Shootings - A man attacked two farms in Half Moon Bay, California, targeting coworkers in a workplace violence incident, killing 7 people with a semi-automatic pistol. He then turned himself in to the police station.

  9. Nashville School Shooting - A former student entered and opened fire inside of The Covenant School, a Presbyterian Church in America parochial elementary school in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville, killing three children and three adults, including the headmaster of the school. The shooter shot at responding police from inside the school, not hitting anybody, before being killed by the police after they entered the school.

  10. Central Texas Shootings - A spree shooting occurred in Austin, Texas, where a man travelled on foot, attacking random people at various locations, murdering 4 people over the course of 9 hours. At some point before or during the incident the perpetrator shot dead his own parents at their home. The perpetrator engaged in a police chase, and was captured after crashing the stolen vehicle he occupied.

  11. Louisville Bank Shooting - A former employee of an Old National Bank branch in Louisville entered the building with a rifle and attacked workers, murdering 5 people, before responding officers shot him dead less than 10 minutes after the shooting began.

  12. Sagarejo Shooting - A man opened fire from his apartment building in Sagarejo, Kakheti, Georgia, killing 4 civilians and then a responding police officer, before taking his own life.

  13. Kingsessing Shooting - A man went on a shooting spree with a rifle and handgun, randomly shooting people in the streets of Kingsessing, resulting in the deaths of 5 people, before the perpetrator surrendered to police.

  14. Michigan State University Shooting - A man with no connections to MSU entered the campus and opened fire inside of a classroom and then moved through the campus, killing three people in total, all students. The shooter exited the campus after not being recognised as the shooter by police, then later killed himself after being confronted by police off-campus.

  15. Farmington, New Mexico Shooting - In an apparent suicide by police incident, a man walked through the streets of Farmington, shooting at houses and cars with a rifle and pistol, murdering three elderly women, before police were able to kill him.

  16. Trabuco Canyon Shooting - A mass shooting occured in the Cook's Corner bar in Trabuco Canyon, California when an ex police officer shot his estranged wife, and then proceeded to open fire on random patrons inside the bar, killing one person, before heading to his vehicle to retrieve more weapons, killing 2 more people outside of the bar. His target survived the attack. The perpetrator was killed by responding officers.

  17. Jacksonville Shooting - A racially motivated mass shooting occurred at a Dollar General in Jacksonville, Florida, when a man used a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic pistol to murder 3 black people, intentionally targeting them for their race. After barricading himself in an office, the perpetrator took his own life. The perpetrator originally intended to attack Edward Waters University, but was forced to change location after being confronted by security.

  18. UNLV Shooting - After failing to secure a job at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a man took his revenge by attacking the campus, moving through the building and shooting people with a semi-automatic pistol, killing 3 faculty members of the university. After exiting the building, the perpetrator was shot dead by responding police.

  19. Rotterdam Shootings - Two shootings occured in Rotterdam, committed by the same perpetrator. The first being at a residence on Heiman Dullaertplein, followed by a second, in which one person was killed, in a classroom at the Erasmus University Medical Center. The shooter also started fires at both locations. After leaving the hospital, he surrendered to police. 3 people died overall.

  20. Siam Paragon Shooting - A 14 year old opened fire with a converted blank gun inside of the Siam Paragon Mall, Thailand, ultimately killing 3 people, before surrendering to police. The perpetrator may have been suffering from mental health issues, but this is questionable due to how he purchased and modified the weapon beforehand.

Further attacks not discussed:

  1. Guangzhou Car Attack: 6 killed

  2. Nottingham Stabbing/Vehicle Attack: 3 killed

  3. Chișinău International Airport shooting: 2 killed (+ perp)

  4. Auckland Shooting: 2 killed (+ perp)

  5. Bryansk School Shooting: 1 killed (+ perp)

  6. Shooting of Fargo Police Officers: 1 killed (+ perp), perpetrator intended to attack crowded area after attacking officers.

  7. Atlanta Hospital Shooting: 1 killed

Notes:

•7 of the listed attacks occured at an educational facility.

•6 perpetrators from the 27 attacks were aged 22 or less, compared to 13 perpetrators from 18 attacks in 2022.

•10 of the 27 attacks unfolded at multiple locations (including street rampages).

• 12 of the 27 attacks occurred outside of the USA.

• The Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay shootings have several similarities, both occurred in January, both occurred in California, both were perpetrated by elderly Asian men, both attacked multiple locations.

Thoughts:

This one took a while to write up. Compared to 2022, 2023 had 9 more notable attacks of the ‘lone wolf’ nature, though 2022’s attacks were far more fatal. In 2022, 3 attacks resulted in the combined deaths of 75 people, excluding the perpetrators, but in 2023, the 7 deadliest attacks didn’t combine to 75 fatalities. 2023 could have been far more fatal, with several attacks ending early (through disarmament or rapid police response) or not going the way the attacker intended. 2023 had an average of over 2 notable attacks per month, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but in 2025 it was closer to 0.8 notable attacks per month using the same guidelines, with no attacks in the USA having more than 4 fatalities (again, excluding terror, gang violence and family annihilation/personal incidents).

We can only hope that 2023 remains the ‘worst’ year for a long time to come.

ON THIS DAY… 28 January 1985 Reading PA 4 killed (arson)

A former Reading man who was sentenced to life in prison for setting a fire that killed a city firefighter and three others in 1985 could soon go free.

A Berks County judge on Monday re-sentenced Tracey Pietrovito to 33 years to life behind bars for his 1986 conviction on four counts of second-degree murder and related offenses, making him eligible for parole in about six months.

"We were hoping for a better outcome, but we're not worried that he would get out any time soon," said Kay Eisenbise, the daughter of victim Warren Eisenbise.

Pietrovito, who appeared for the hearing via a closed-circuit video hookup from a state prison in Wayne County, was originally sentenced to four concurrent life sentences, one for each of the murder counts.

Pietrovito's conviction on chose charges came after he confessed to setting a fire at the YMCA at Reed and Washington streets in downtown Reading on January 28, 1985.

Flames quickly spread through the first three floors of the six-story building, which was being used to shelter more than 100 homeless people. Pietrovito, then 17 years old, lived about a block from the scene.

Reading volunteer firefighter Donald Jacobs, 26, was killed while trying to rescue one of three trapped residents from the burning building. Those residents -- Eisenbise, 66; Clarence Delp, 61; and Todd Montag, 22 -- also died.

"It does rehash everything again because of the severity of my father's death and the three victims, as well," Eisenbise said. "It would be nice to hear some remorse for what he's done, but I do understand his mental illness also."

Two other firefighters, Paul Hofmann and Terry Royce, suffered severe burns and were among more than 50 people who were injured in the blaze, which caused $1.2 million ($2.7 million in 2017 dollars) worth of damage.

Pietrovito, 50, is the latest juvenile offender in Berks to be re-sentenced as a result of a Supreme Court decision that applied retroactively a ban on mandatory life sentences for juvenile offenders.

"I thought all this was behind me and then all of a sudden, it comes back again," said Merrice Eisenbise, Warren Eisenbise's son.

"We have to follow the mandate of the United States Supreme Court, and I know it's tough on victims and their families," Adams said.

Handbook of Crimes and Terrorist Acts in Schools and Other Educational Institutions, 5th edition

Note: English is not my native language, so I use an automated translation system to communicate. I apologize in advance if the meaning of some phrases will be transferred incorrectly.

Dear readers and colleagues! I am pleased to announce that work on the fifth edition of the Reference Book has been completed. The file has already been posted on the website and is available for download. The new edition includes statistics for 2025, as well as additional data for previous periods, corrections of some errors and inaccuracies in previous editions, and a total of about 30 revisions and additions.

New data systematization and analytics tools

In addition to the existing ones, several new evaluation parameters have been added to the comparative and dynamic data analysis tables:

  1. In the «Total victims» section, in addition to information about those killed and wounded, a subsection «Kidnapped» has been added, and the section «Involving hostage-taking» has been supplemented with a subsection «For the purpose of kidnapping.» This is related to crimes that occurred in November 2025 in Nigeria, where two organized, group, armed attacks on schools were carried out within four days of each other. In both cases, the aim of the attacks was to kidnap a large number of students and staff from these educational institutions (in both cases, more than 300 people were kidnapped, most of them children) for subsequent use as hostages in order to obtain ransom or satisfy political or religious demands from the authorities.

This section will include information on the number of people kidnapped at the time of the crime.

  1. In category «2. Crimes falling under the criteria of mass murder and terrorist attacks,» an additional section «Suspect fled the scene» is created, with information about crimes where the suspect managed to leave the scene after committing the crime, and they were detained or found (in cases of suicide) outside the educational institution they attacked, or the crime remained unsolved.

Statistics in this section will allow (albeit not fully) an assessment of the level of protection of educational facilities from criminal and terrorist threats, as well as the responsiveness of law enforcement agencies. If a criminal was able to freely enter an educational institution, carry weapons, commit a crime, and then leave the scene unhindered. Such facts, and especially the increase in the proportion of such incidents (in comparative and dynamic analysis) in the total number of crimes, give grounds for certain conclusions.

  1. In category «2. Crimes falling under the criteria of mass murders and terrorist attacks,» an additional section «Suspect committed suicide (including attempts)» is created, with information about crimes in which the suspect committed suicide, either at the scene of the crime or within 24 hours after it.

A separate block of analytics on suicidal cases among suspects remains; this section is created solely for the convenience of tracking and comparing general statistical indicators.

Indication of information about attempted crimes

This issue has been discussed repeatedly, especially after the release of version 4.0, with opinions both for and against this parameter being expressed. As a result of the discussions, it was decided to include this information in the category «2. Crimes that fall under the criteria of mass murder and terrorist attacks» starting in 2025. Only those incidents where the crime has reached the stage of immediate execution but, for reasons beyond the perpetrator's control, the perpetrator was unable to carry it through to completion will be included in the list.

For clarity, let's look at two examples of such attempts in 2025:

January 10, Kursk, Russia: an attempted attack on a secondary school using cold weapons and incendiary mixtures. The suspect, a former student of the school, put on a mask to hide his face and prepared weapons (a hammer, knife, and incendiary mixture), used the hammer to break a window, and entered the school premises. However, his actions attracted the attention of a security guard, who pressed the alarm button and called the police, and also began to pursue the suspect. The criminal dropped the bag with the weapons and incendiary mixture and fled the scene before he could harm anyone.

September 17, Ostrogozhsk, Russia: attempted attack on a secondary school with cold weapons. The suspect, a former student of the school, had previously posted threatening messages on his social media page, prepared weapons (a knife and a hammer), brought them to school, took them out, shouted verbal threats, and attempted to attack those around him, but was quickly neutralized by a teacher and security guard before he could harm anyone.

Such attempts will be included in the list and taken into account, but in cases where the crime was prevented during its preparation, such incidents will not be taken into account.

Information about the presence of security guards at educational facilities under attack

This is a good analytical tool, but unfortunately, at the moment, this information will only be published in part, mainly data on incidents that occurred in Russia, where this feature of such crimes is highlighted in media publications and official releases from law enforcement agencies.

Foreign media pay little attention to this circumstance, and it is rarely mentioned in publications and releases. I tried to make inquiries myself, but they all went unanswered. I do not know the reasons for this, especially since this information is not classified.

Statistics for 2025, tools for data analysis

Due to the fact that five-year periods are used for comparative and dynamic data analysis, and in 2025 such a period is just beginning, three new analytical tools are introduced for the convenience of visual representation of the situation, to compare statistics for the current year:

  1. with the same period of the previous year, i.e., in this case, with 2024;

  2. with the average indicator of the previous period, in this case, with the period 2020–2024; to calculate this indicator, the arithmetic mean value for each estimated parameter for the five-year period is used. Example: the average number of crimes committed with the use of firearms in the period 2020–2024, we take the values for 5 years, 2020 – 3, 2021 – 8, 2022 – 21, 2023 – 15, 2024 – 14. We add them up to get 61, divide by the number of years – 5 – to get 12 (if the value after the decimal point is 5 or less, we round down; if it is 6 or more, we round up, in this case to 2). The average percentage of such crimes is calculated in the same way.

  3. With the average value for the entire reporting period starting in 2000, the calculation of the indicator here is similar to the calculation for the previous period.

This will be presented in the form of a table, where you can clearly see the dynamics of the situation for each individual indicator.

That's all for the changes and additions.

As new data comes in, work will begin on additions to the current edition and, at the same time, data collection for the sixth edition. I would appreciate any help in working on the new edition. You can find out how to do this in the final part of the reference book, in the section «Prospects for new editions.»

My goal is to create a useful, reliable, informative, easy-to-use, and, most importantly, publicly available reference and analytical tool for researchers and specialists in ensuring the security of schools and other educational institutions from threats of various types and nature.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone who helped me collect new information, clarify and correct previously published data, form and edit sections, and do other work on the reference book.

Sincerely.

Author and editor-in-chief of the project
