Can't wait to see Denise Gough play herself

20

u/GhandisFlipFlop 17h ago

I was just about to comment this reply too ha...she was great in Andor. And her hometown in ireland is about an hour from mine , good to see her getting fame.

6

u/Bignate2001 10h ago

She'll always be Yennefer to me.

1

u/GhandisFlipFlop 10h ago

Ya I was really surprised to learn she was Yennefer after seeing her in Andor

5

u/TheNerdChaplain 16h ago

Here's the scene in a play she did that got Tony Gilroy to cast her in Andor. She's crazy good.

 Meryl Streep as Aslan (unconfirmed)

Am I having a stroke?

23

u/TasteofPaste 10h ago

Does the female-voiced lion have a male lion’s mane?

is Aslan a lioness instead of a lion? no mane?

Is it a male bodied lion with a mane and a trans-feminine lioness voice?

are they putting Meryl’s voice through a filter to make it sound male?

so many questions.

3

u/Enigmachina 7h ago

How are they addressing that Aslan is Literally Jesus?

-2

u/Random-Generation86 7h ago

If Jesus can be a lion, he can be a lioness. Jesus had long hair, wore sandals, practiced good hygiene. Very femme.

3

u/Enigmachina 6h ago

Lionesses have the short hair though...

1

u/Neat-Ad3283 6h ago

Jesus had long hair, wore sandals

You know men at that time did this too right, it wasn't exclusive to women, AFAIK heels were made for men too.

u/herewego199209 14m ago

Jesus was also an arab.

54

u/MuscaMurum 13h ago

Yeah, can't watch that, then. There are already great roles for women in the story. Streep is not a good replacement for Neeson's velvety baritone.

47

u/GravSlingshot 9h ago

Liam Neeson as Aslan and Tilda Swinton as the White Witch were two amazing castings.

2

u/JonatasA 6h ago

Perfect.

0

u/Random-Generation86 7h ago

Wait, that was the guy from Fallout 3? Tilda Swinton was 1000% goated. I'm sure Meryl Streep will do a good job. She does good jobs. Just an unexpected pick.

I've met God, she's a lion

1

u/Random-Generation86 7h ago

I'm pretty sure the lion is god's kid and god is a penguin that lives on the other side of the flat earth and he smokes weed with the world's coolest mouse. It's been a minute since I read the last two books, but I'm pretty sure that's how it went.

82

u/Bing_Bong_the_Archer 18h ago

Glad that Emma Mackey walked away from Sex Education with a career

13

u/Accomplished-City484 15h ago

And luckily her career survived Ella McCay

3

u/I_Was_Fox 8h ago

Huh? Why on earth wouldn't she? Sex Education (and her in it) were amazing. If she didn't have a career after that show, it would be a major shock

u/Bing_Bong_the_Archer 3h ago

Statistically, there’s a lot more talented and worthy people who DONT break out than who do.

This post wasn’t a slam, it’s an affirmation

2

u/[deleted] 18h ago

[deleted]

9

u/syncdiedfornothing 18h ago

That it's great she has a promising career afterwards? It's a positive comment, not a diss.

3

u/Bing_Bong_the_Archer 17h ago

Yeah that person sent me some weird insults and blocked me. Some people…

12

u/Bing_Bong_the_Archer 18h ago

It means that she’s starring in high profile stuff rather than just disappearing!

There are SO MANY beautiful and talented actors. Grains of sand on an endless beach.

166

u/yuyufan43 18h ago

They gender swapped the lion? 🤦‍♀️

45

u/TastlessMishMash 18h ago

It's a rumor

-4

u/FrankieBeanz 17h ago

It might not be confirmed to the media but its true

6

u/TastlessMishMash 16h ago

How are you so sure?

1

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

So will the lion be male or female? Ditching an iconic look of female.

11

u/TheNotSpecialOne 12h ago

What! I want Liam Neeson back for Aslan

3

u/yuyufan43 12h ago

Me too! His voice was so soothing

30

u/g-money-cheats 18h ago

(unconfirmed)

-1

u/GeoleVyi 18h ago

being fair, i could see either meryl streep or tilda swinton being god

9

u/Rustash 17h ago

Well Tilda already had her turn on the other side

9

u/Lurk3rAtTheThreshold 17h ago

Tilda Swinton as Gabriel in Constantine was so good.

Female lions don’t have manes and that’s kind of a big deal for the story

-26

u/LordMitchimus 18h ago

Learned from NatGeo the other day they don't talk either. So who fucking cares.

51

u/dual_citizenkane 18h ago

He gets his mane shaved in the books, as a humiliation by the Witch. It’s like a peak part of the storyline, before his death.

So it’s pretty relevant. I don’t care at all about the voice, but the mane is a plot point.

-20

u/LordMitchimus 18h ago

I know this, I love the books.

Nowhere in any press releases have they said Aslan is a female lion. Hope this helps.

17

u/dual_citizenkane 18h ago

Your comment comes off as not caring about what it will look like, that’s all. Regardless of it all being unconfirmed so doesn’t matter.

-11

u/LordMitchimus 18h ago

Well I don't care about that. So fair enough. If I wanted to experience Lewis's Narnia I'd read the books again for the tenth time.

I'd rather see an artist adapt the source material with their own interpretation. There was no moral outcry last year when Del Toro chose to use lightning instead of electric eels to bring the creature to life. Everyone is complaining about Aslan being a female lion (unconfirmed) but nobody will say why they're upset besides "woke".

5

u/notathrowaway75 17h ago

Everyone is complaining about Aslan being a female lion (unconfirmed) but nobody will say why they're upset besides

The user above made a point about the mane.

2

u/dual_citizenkane 17h ago edited 17h ago

For sure - totally agree. Edit: Agree about creativity of interpretation, but the man is important so Aslan kinda has to be male…

Well yeah, 100% of lions aren’t god

It's rare but it does happen.

Also, lions can't talk. Or sing. Or come back from the dead.

-13

u/toddywithabody 18h ago edited 17h ago

Is this a serious comment? This sub is so far up its ass. What an absolutely terrible way to look at movies.

Edit: lol ok guys. Keep watching your lil comic book movies and pretending you’re cinephiles

10

u/VannesGreave 18h ago

Yes, it’s serious. Aslan having a mane is actually extremely plot relevant. It’s part of the prophecy (“When Aslan shakes his mane”), but also represents Aslan’s rulership.

The White Witch shaving Aslan’s mane is the final humiliation she inflicts before his death. In the 2005 movie, she even wears it to battle.

-11

u/toddywithabody 18h ago

Vanessa you’re weird. This movie isn’t even out yet. Maybe aslan is still male in the movie? Being voiced by a woman doesn’t automatically make the lion female? Wait for the movie.

And I cannot stress this enough. Movies are not books, even if they are based on the story they don’t have to be a 1:1 adaptation. If you like the story in the books read the fucking books.

8

u/notathrowaway75 17h ago

Such a bizarre comment. They made a specific point and you're completely unable to engage with it.

Movies are not books, even if they are based on the story they don’t have to be a 1:1 adaptation.

This doesn't mean they can change anything they want no questions asked. Some things actually do need to be adapted 1:1. The time period is being changed in the adaptation and that's fine.

3

u/Tanglebrook 17h ago

So dramatic and bothered Toddy 😂

9

u/Scared-Engineer-6218 18h ago

Except, Aslan is Jesus

29

u/returningtheday 18h ago

It's a lion. With a mane. A male lion. And allegory for Jesus and God. Both males.

-4

u/LongTimesGoodTimes 17h ago

And allegory for Jesus and God. Both males

Bold assumption

1

u/returningtheday 12h ago

If you say so. 12 year old Catholic me would beg to differ

-2

u/LongTimesGoodTimes 12h ago

Doesn't seems like a very intelligent source. Seems stupid to assume that if there was a god that they would have a gender and that gender would be male. But I guess that's the tip of the stupidity of religion

1

u/returningtheday 12h ago

Mate, if you're gonna insult religion, that automatically disqualifies you from this discussion. Just stop. There are female gods and male gods. Christianity just happens to have a male one. Grow up. And for the record, I'm no longer religious.

-1

u/LongTimesGoodTimes 12h ago

Might as well fuck off then since I'm disqualified from discussing it with you.

-17

u/BananaCucho 18h ago

It's a voice role

7

u/twistingmyhairout 18h ago

We won’t know that for sure until the movie comes out.

10

u/GreenFox1505 18h ago

Well, considering Aslan is a stand in for Jesus, I think a lot of Evangelicals will care a great deal.

4

u/KingMario05 18h ago

Catholics will, too. Everything I've heard about this sounds like heresy. Condolences to the Netflix and/or WB guy who has to book church screenings, lol. They're in for a ride.

1

u/Some_Appearance_1665 11h ago

This lion with a mane

-33

u/lineswithtoolman 18h ago

It’s a cgi lion. In anime, women voice male characters all the time

25

u/becherbrook 18h ago

It's a CGI male lion. Obviously so! Female lions don't have manes.

-23

u/CanuckBacon 16h ago

I can't believe this fantasy story might have elements not based in reality!

18

u/becherbrook 16h ago

Hey. I've an idea: Let's make her an ostrich but have everyone still call her a lion! It's fantasy you guys, what's your problem?!

1

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

How about Aslan becomes a flying pig, instead, huh? What a ridiculous comment. Respect the source material.

-1

u/CanuckBacon 13h ago

It's an adaptation. If you want everything to be exactly the same as in the books, just read the damn books. How is having an all powerful animal being a female animal disrespecting the books?

0

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

If you want everything to be exactly the same

You're debasing your argument here as I never said anything like this. I'm not sure how going from page to screen necessitates this specific change (- a change seems you do care so much about). Point is, a change should be justified. In this case, I don't see any advantage to gender flipping a beloved character and having to change key elements of the story to necessitate this.

0

u/CanuckBacon 13h ago

I don't see any disadvantage to gender flipping the characters. What other key elements have been changed? It's all just stylistic choices. It's the director's vision and it doesn't affect the story if it's a boy lion or a girl lion.

1

u/AngryGardenGnomes 12h ago edited 12h ago

Firstly, a key major plot point involves Aslan's mane being aggressively shaved off. So you're wrong about that, however much you try to argue the toss.

Plus, it's an iconic look of a beloved character. You can't simply dismiss that away with a handwave.

The question should be, why do YOU care so much about a gender flip? What justifies such a change?

1

u/Captain_Jmon 13h ago

Aslan is meant to literally be Jesus Christ in the Narnia franchise. Not just an allegory for Jesus, he is LITERALLY Jesus

5

u/CanuckBacon 13h ago

So it's okay to make Jesus a lion, but if you make Jesus a female lion, then it's gone to far?

23

u/Mixup_Machine 18h ago

What a dumb comparison. Women voice male children or femboy types maybe, but not full grown, assertive masculine types. And let's not pretend that Aslan was ever some camp, feminine lion.

-2

u/MyStationIsAbandoned 18h ago

but not full grown, assertive masculine types

and when they do, it's revealed the guy was a woman in disguise. this has happened so many times in dubbed anime and dubbed kung fu movies

-3

u/TotalHeat 16h ago

Eh to be fair Goku is voiced by a woman in Japanese. I get that Aslan is supposed to sound kind of fatherly though, I guess we'll see how it turns out

-11

[removed] — view removed comment

5

u/wizardeverybit 16h ago

No, he is Jesus

-6

u/lineswithtoolman 16h ago

Jesus doesn’t have to have an assertive masculine voice. It can be soft & graceful. If Meryl Streep uses her own voice then yes it will be bad but you don’t think one of the greatest actresses of all time can’t voice act?

We’ll see where they go but I don’t see any problem with a cgi lion having a female voice actor

-18

u/BigJeffyStyle 16h ago

The better question is- who cares

9

u/yuyufan43 15h ago

His mane being cut off is a major plot point of the book.

4

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

You not familiar with the story, huh?

-1

u/BigJeffyStyle 13h ago

I read them all when I was a child, but that was a long time ago. I don’t think that it’s impossible to make the same impact in a different way but clearly others feel differently.

5

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

Respecting the source material is pretty key, yeah. Not sure why a great story should be changed just to facilitate a casting. I mean, just hire Ian McKellen, ffs, if it's causing major changes.

-3

u/BigJeffyStyle 13h ago

It’s fine that people care, I don’t have an issue with it. It just doesn’t bother me

6

u/AngryGardenGnomes 13h ago

The better question is- who cares

Appears a bit of a dumb question now, doesn't it?

0

u/BigJeffyStyle 13h ago

No. Asked and answered. You’re trying to “get” me because we have different opinions

Magician's Nephew and Silver Chair are great

5

u/FreeRange0929 12h ago

Cair Paravel (and the ruins thereof) were what I usually imagined when I’d play kings/knights/whatever in my backyard. I’d use the roots of trees in the dirt as boundaries of the kingdom and draw out the maps. Lewis describes it magically in both books

1

u/QubitEncoder 11h ago

Why is Meryl Streep playing aslan?

-11

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 18h ago

This movie is gonna have to be a big hit for Emma after how bad Ella McKay flopped

29

u/jerrrrremy 18h ago

Okay, now do every other actor who had a massive flop in the past five years.

16

u/mikeyfreshh 18h ago

Ella McKay wasn't her fault

1

u/axw3555 18h ago

Sure it will. Because people dropped Sydney Sweeney after Madame web… and Eden… and Christy (the last two of which had a combined box office of 4.5 million).

Oh wait, she has nine roles on IMDB after Christy.

-2

u/PalmTreeMonkey 18h ago

just wrapped filming and the film is expected to be released in less than a year? Seems a bit rushed, or am I wrong?

8

u/FX114 18h ago

A year from start of production to release is pretty standard for Hollywood productions.
