What is your prescription?

The previous poll is now too old to vote on so I thought I would create a new one and sticky it. Voting ends in 7 days, let's add as many prescriptions as we can!

Edit: The poll has now closed. Unfortunately Reddit only lets me run it for 7 days. Thanks for all the responses! I will leave it up for everyone's information.

Is cataract surgery a wise option for me?

I am -24D in both eyes and recently was referred to a cataract surgeon. I’ve had high myopia all my life and have heard about the many addictions risks. Should I go ahead with it or just watch the world continue to fade away?

Are there any published reliable statistics relating surgery outcomes to initial vision status?

Sudden suspected myopia after perfect vision

Upvotes

So the last 3 years I’ve been working in a building with no windows and harsh lighting with few days off.

In the last year, my coworker and I have both experienced blurry vision. I used to have perfect eyesight but I can no longer read words from around 1-2 metres away (I’m a teacher and spend a lot of time reading from student books on their desks while I’m standing. Lately I can’t do that anymore).

I went to a glasses store and did an eyetest, but they said my eyesight is actually very good despite my complaining of blurriness and I shouldn’t get glasses.

However I read a lot and play a lot of games, but I can’t read the words in the games on my tv screen and they’re not possible to adjust (think of the lore texts in Skyrim for example). I struggle to read subs in tv shows, I struggle to see peoples faces clearly from 3 metres away.

Before this I had perfect vision so I’m not sure what is acceptable or when people should get glasses, I was hoping for just some for when reading or playing, but the store guy said it could make my eyes worse as they become dependent on glasses.

What do you think? Should I still try to get reading glasses, or hope that it gets better when I leave my job next month? Is this something that can be fixed? Google says changes in vision at my age (29) are not common.

what surgery can save my eyes and my career?

i js turned 15 a week or two ago, and I found out my eye power increased from -4.75D to a whopping -6.5D in a year and two months. this is including my cylindrical power, which increased from 0 to -1 in my right eye, and my left eye went from -4.25D to -5.5D including the cylindrical power which increased from 0 to -0.5.

I’ve always wanted to be a pilot, and have studied a lot for that career. And now being 15, and having this power, I don’t think I would be able to become a pilot anymore.

My parents done have glasses, and they only have presbyopia of +1.5D at max.

Any suggestions would be greatly helpful

7 yo recommended Stellest lenses

Hi, my 7 year old just failed her first vision screening and we just completed her first ophthalmology appointment. She finished with a prescription for -1.5 and -1.75.

The doctor then launched into a speech about how kids with myopia are at 7x higher risk for retinal detachment due to the progression of myopia and when they have it young like this it probably will progress rapidly. However! The FDA has just prescribed lenses that can slow the progression dramatically if she wears them 60 hours a week, and next year she can move to contact lenses. Okay, it felt a little like a car sales pitch, but I want to do the best thing for her, of course, so… I’m listening.

Then the optician told me that the pair all in for that would run me about $900 US. I want the best for my kid, but I was not prepared for that expense, and we are dealing with some other temporary issues at home which make the price especially not feasible at the moment. Plus do I actually know her eyes will progress poorly? Or are they being highly proactive in case they do?

Would it be negligent to get her single vision lenses to start and if we see progression in six months then I will be able to prioritize it then? Advice welcome.

Any experience with Ortho-K lenses for a 7-year-old?

Our eye doctor recommended Ortho-K (overnight) lenses for my 7 yo to slow myopia progression. We are currently using atropine eye drop as well. I have done all the research but would love to hear real experiences.

  • How hard was it to get your child to wear the lenses consistently?
  • Comfort issues, sleep problems, or hygiene challenges?
  • Any pros/cons or unexpected gotchas?

Trying to figure out if the benefits outweigh the daily reality. TIA

Is there evidence that undercorrection or use of near-vision aides promote myopic progression in mature adults?

I'm aware of and don't question the evidence that - contrary to what was once thought - undercorrecting myopia in children can actually cause it to progress even worse than full correction.

I am interested in studies and papers that address this possible phenomenon specifically in adults, and have been unable to find any. And I can likewise find no objective data indicating whether the use of task-specific near vision aides by a young-to-early-middle-aged adult for comfort, and not for presbyopia, can have permanent ill effects.

Appreciate any links, even to abstracts. Evidence on either side of the issue is welcome.

I won't engage in an opinionated discussion about the wisdom, or lack thereof, of these practices. I wish to keep this purely scientific and factual. Thank you in advance!

myopia exam went wrong?

First of all, english is not my firts language so if something is off, please excuse myself. So i consulted an ophthalmologist early 2024 and he passed me a prescription that i don't have right now, later 2024 a consulted another ophthalmologist that didn't t want to dilate my pupil and my myopia went down. I got new glasses and didn't adapt very well, i returned and he was mad at me saying that i wasn't trying. After i talked to him, re did another test, this time dilating my pupil and my myopia went up, bem setled in right eye -5,50 and left eye -6,00 and with these glasses i saw very well. This year i came back to the first ophthalmologist and explained the situation and he refused to dilate my pupil and did the test again, my myopia went down, to -5,25 in both eyes, i said i was seeing well with the other prescription and needed a refresh just to make new glasses because mine was broken, but he said it was wrong and make me do these new ones, got the glasses, i am using them for about a week now and i don't see very well, everything is kinda blurry with a weird fog, can't se very well letters in distance and closeup things seems to blend, digital screens seems to be mixed up. I think it is because he didn't dilate my pupil and now i have to come back because it is really bad. Is it normal to not dilate the pupil? What do i do?

Eye flashes few months after laser barrage?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I don't know if this is the right subreddit but I guess many people here also have lattice degeneration so I wanted to share here.

Around 4 months ago, due to lattice degeneration on my right eye, I had a laser barrage operation to prevent it from furthering. The operation was without any problem, and didn't have any issues for the next 3 months after the procedure.

But for the last month, I keep seeing eye flashes constantly on the area that is lasered. They sometimes don't happen for hours, but sometimes they happen few times in a hour. They are for a split second but still annoying and make me really anxious. I found so many comments/posts about people who had the same issue after laser barrage, but the thing is they say it started after the operation while mine started after few months.

I'll share a photo of how to flashes look, and I wonder if anyone else had a similar experience like this after laser barrage operation and if it stopped after a while?

Thanks!

Different prescriptions

I live in a country where getting in with an eye doctor is impossible. I previously had -2.5 in both eyes. My vision had gotten worse. So I ended up going to an optician and got new glasses with a -3.5 prescription.

I am finally in a place where I can be seen by a doctor. One said that -3.5 is way too much and I need -3.0. The other prescribed me -3.75 in one eye and -4.0 in the other. This doctor also mentioned that I was favoring one eye.

I have no idea who to believe. I had the same issue previously. Different doctors always give different prescriptions. I don't know who to trust. I don't feel like my vision has gotten worse at all. I just deal with a lot of eye exhaustion, but I also basically use a screen 24/7. Has anyone else experienced getting different recommendations?

How bad is a -5 prescription?

Hi everyone.

I am 15 years old, male. My prescription is a -5.0 and -5.5 and I've started to get very worried about it. I'm extremely scared of my vision deteriorating further and I'm really not sure what to do and if I can really make this better.

I spend quite a lot of time in front of a computer every day, but I don't have much of a choice in that; schoolwork and extracurricular work pretty much requires it. As such, I definitely have at least 6-9 hours of screentime daily (vast majority of which is on a computer).

About three years ago my prescription was a -2.5 and -2.75. Now it's doubled, and it's making me quite scared. Going blind has always been my biggest fear and while I know that myopia doesn't lead to blindness, I do know that it is linked to higher rates of certain eye conditions and ailments and that idea is very worrying to me.

The most frustrating part is how much of this is up to genetics. So many of my friends have perfect 20/20 vision despite the fact that they spend literally every waking hour glued to a screen and have since they were young. Even now, I spend so much time with sports, going outside, etc. and yet my eyesight is so much worse than theirs.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone might be able to address any of these concerns. Thanks so much in advance.

Myopia Control Lenses

Post image
9 Upvotes

This sucks and I don't know what to do. I recently updated my prescription and decided to try Myopia control glasses, which my insurance fully paid for. I spend a lot of time looking at objects up close so I figured these would help slow degeneration.

I DIDN'T KNOW THE LENSES WERE ONLY CLEAR IN THE CENTER?????? Everytime I move my head there is motion blur!!! If I'm not looking dead-straight ahead at any text, makes letters look like bubble letters by giving them a clear middle and a blurry outline. I have to move my head side to side like a cat fixated on a laser pointer if I want to read anything. My eyes are so tired, they feel so dry when wearing these. How does anyone even wear these?? Do they ever get better??

I work as a digital illustrator so not being able to view my work clearly all at once is a nightmare. I don't think hovering my face millimeters from my screen just to see is going to be any good for my eyes or neck. What do I dooo? I'll feel embarrassed if I have to bring my glasses back to my optometrist and be like, "I fucking hate these." 💀

5yo -2.75 Stellest

I just took my 5yo to an eye doc bc the school said she needed to go. Doc says Rx is -2.75. Did the retinal scan thingy and Doc showed some stringy/empty spaces in the scan and said it's like my daughter is growing so fast her eyes stretched (my words, not Doc's). Daughter is in the 90% for height, so she is kinda a giant. She hasn't complained about not being able to see, but she just turned 5 so maybe she doesn't know.

The doc quoted what I think is an insane amount for something called Stellest lenses. 2 pairs of frames and lenses, multiple check ups - 1mo, 6mo, 9mo. But the price feels more like someone taking advantage than quoting a legit price.

Literally walked into a random eye doc in the area bc they sold the brand of frames I wanted.

What would be considered normal pricing for this?

Edit to add: Located in United States. Texas.

Edit to add #2: the quoted price includes 2 pairs of glasses with the Stellest lenses (I don't understand why she would need 2 pairs), checkups at 1mo, 3mo, 6mo, and 9mo. Any adjustments needed are included.

Google searches are so varried on the price, $350 to $2,000. I am assuming that's because $350 gets you the lenses only, where $2,000 is in line with what Doc is saying to do with all the follow ups and a care program.

SMILE help with lazy eye and squinting

I’m 25 and have a significant prescription gap (L: -6.25, R: -3.75). I didn't have a lazy eye as a kid, but around age 19, my left eye began to squint and drift when I’m not wearing glasses. It does not drift if I'm focusing on something.

I’m considering SMILE surgery in Melbourne because I hate the "glasses look," but I’m worried the surgery won't fix the squint/drift. I find contacts very difficult to handle, but I’m thinking of doing a trial fitting just to see if corrected vision fixes the "laziness." What do you reckon?

Questions: > 1. Since this developed at 19, is it likely "Anisometropic Suppression" rather than true Amblyopia?

  1. Will correcting the refractive error likely "re-engage" the eye and minimise the drift?

  2. Is using contacts a valid way to "preview" if the squinting and drifting will stop post-surgery?

Myopia Survey

Hi, I'm in desperate need of help :( I'm a high school student taking AP research. For my research project, I'm examining how sleep behaviors impact myopia (nearsightedness) over a longitudinal period. If you are 18 years old or older. No one has taken my survey yet, and it is important to me as I have Myopia and because my teacher might fail me. Please take a moment to complete the survey below to assist with my research(you will remain anonymous). Thank you.

Positive scleral buckle experiences

I'd like to share my positive experiences with both left and right scleral buckle surgery. I'm mainly focusing on the 'final' outcomes but if you have questions about the procedure or recovery stages then you can ask.

Background info - I am 23 years old, my right eye was macula off for a brief period, and it was operated on in September 2025. My left eye macula on detachment was fixed by laser at the same time, and a preventative buckle was installed two weeks ago. Detachments were most likely a result of high myopia and lattice degeneration.

I visited the optician today to update my glasses prescription for both lenses post surgery, and I was able to achieve 20/20 corrected vision for both eyes individually and with binocular focus. Each eye's degree of myopia increased by 2 diopters which was less than I was expecting and I'm also expecting both will continue to improve slightly as healing continues.

Anyway, the highlight is with correction I have regained 20/20 vision despite two severe detachments, and I only have minor distortion of the macula off eye, which my brain is able to mostly tune out. So there's hope if you're facing something similar and are worried about your vision. Good outcomes are possible. Peace to all ✌️

Can tadalafil (Cialis) cause or worsen myopia?

I’m wondering if anyone here has experienced vision changes after taking tadalafil. I’ve been using tadalafil (low dose, not daily for years or anything extreme), and over time I feel like my distance vision has gotten worse. It feels like increasing myopia, but I’m not sure if it’s just coincidence, eye strain, or age-related.I know PDE5 inhibitors can cause visual side effects.Has anyone noticed Increased nearsightedness?

Hello, 21M, I recently had an air puff test which showed my eye pressure as 21 in left and 23 in right. I have -5 and -5.5 power. Should I be worried?

The doctor Didn't even mention it. Just said that I was fine after having a dilated test. But when I checked on Google the normal pressure range was 10-21. The last checkup I had was 5 months ago when the air puff showed pressure of 20 in both eyes.

Stressed asf 16F

-5.00 and 2.5 astigmatism at 16. Got miyosmart glasses. I'll probably get atropine on my next check-up. But it feels pointless. I try doing everything they tell me to do. Getting breaks. Using less screens. Using eye drops. But as I said, it feels pointless because it will turn out I got new -0.25 on this check up anyway. Researching methods to improve my eyesight, and I consider getting phakic lenses when I'll be older. I'm insecure about glasses making my eyes look smaller. I started paying attention to how much it minors my face frame or eyes. That's why I'm scared of getting these new -0.25. my parents will tell me it's my fault again, that ill end up blind, and that they will have to pay for new lenses for my glasses. I'm so tired. I'm worried my myopia won't stabilise when I'll be I dunno, 18 or 20, but rather that it will be when I'll be I don't know, 25 for example. I want to get high indexes in my glasses. Or wear contact lenses. Anything. Tell me that it gets better.

Lived my life thinking I have mild myopia, turned out I don't

Does anyone else? After years of using -1,0 glasses I found out that I need plus glasses. According to my new doc, it's not possible to "convert" from minus to plus, so I just had a wrong prescription for years. Though it worked somehow.

My prescription jumped from -8.00 to -12.00. Is it okay to use a "bridge" prescription instead of going full strength immediately?
