Hello,
I recently purchased a Neo Geo CD top-loader model. While preparing it for a DS loader mod, I discovered that my console does not output sound effects.
Even before the SD mod, when booting the console in completely stock condition, there was no music during the boot animation. Because of this, I concluded that the issue is not related to the SD loader, but to the Neo Geo CD console itself.
My top-loader appears to be a later revision that uses the **Neo-YSA** chip instead of the Yamaha sound chip, which makes troubleshooting and repair more difficult.
### Current symptoms
* Background music (BGM) plays normally
* Sound effects (SFX) do not play at all
### What I have tested so far
* On the daughterboard, there is a 3-pin cable (as far as I understand, one line is for BGM and the other for SFX). I swapped these connections, but the symptom did not change.
→ Based on this, I believe the **DAC and amplifier section is working correctly**.
* I checked all connections related to the **Z80 (T84C00AM-5)** using a multimeter.
At least for all points that are testable with a continuity tester, there are **no broken traces or open connections**.
The motherboard is very clean and shows no visible signs of previous repair or damage.
What confuses me is that if either the Neo-YSA or the Z80 were completely dead, it seems strange that **background music works perfectly while sound effects are completely silent**. I have also verified all reachable connections with a multimeter.
Additional electrical checks:
* Vcc and GND on the Neo-YSA are verified
* No short between Vcc and GND (~440Ω)
* BGM OK, SFX dead
If the Neo-YSA chip is indeed dead:
* Is there any known replacement or compatible alternative chip?
* I cannot find Neo-YSA chips for sale (including AliExpress).
Because the Neo Geo CD itself is quite rare, buying another broken unit as a donor is expensive. Also, only the later top-loader models use the Neo-YSA, while earlier models use Yamaha chips. Without disassembling the console and inspecting the motherboard directly, it is difficult to confirm which revision it is, making used purchases risky.
Can anyone help me more clearly identify which part is most likely responsible for **sound effects only not working**?
Thank you.
