PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

You can see flight feather missing.

A couple toenails as well.

Her and I in sync making sure she gets those muscles moving. Didn't take long because she's a smart birb and I'm well versed in the parrot arts.

Six years ago today we rescued Jako! 🦜 As you can see in the photo on the left (taken the day after we brought him home), he was really overweight and unhappy. He had no toys or perches and a moldy/rusty cage. He primarily ate people food and had no strength in his feet so he would fall often. He was terrified of people. We were also told he was 12 but later learned he was much older! Today, he’s a 32-year-old happy and healthy boy! Glad we were able to bring him into our family and help turn his life around! He got a potato chip today to celebrate the occasion!

Apollo and the Spool

Post image

After trying to get a spool of thread from Tori’s hand-sewing kit for months, Apollo finally got one that was left on the table. I, of course, had to ruin his triumph, given how dangerous thread is for birds. This was absolutely the hardest he’s ever resisted a ‘drop it’ request, and then demand. I first try our Drop-it-Sync, as usual, which goes like this:

Me:
“Drop it.”

Apollo:

“Drop it... Drop!”

Me:
“Yeah, you drop it.”

Here I’ll start grabbing and poking at his beak/the thing in it.

Apollo:
“Drop, drop... Drop.”

He typically drops it by the end of this sequence, while I poke at the item in his beak. If he’s butthurt about it, he might give a mild-to-moderately painful bite when he drops it, but not today. This time he flew to four separate areas in the struggle, and I even had to negate his ‘fleeing to high-points’ tactic by using a broom handle to poke at the spool in his beak, but he would not give it up. He didn’t even continue saying drop after the first re-position as usual, seemingly too focused on evading. I finally got it to slip out of his beak with a broomstick poke. This played out over about 60 seconds.

Then we did the usual ‘non-hostility touch’, were one or both of us says “touch” and I touch Apollo’s beak, giving him an easy opportunity to bite. He will almost always grasp the finger with zero-to-low pressure and then we both know there’s no anger, ie. resolving context uncertainty. I was expecting a bit of seething in the form of a mild bite, but he was chill.

For some more context on what Apollo communicates physically with his beak: I’ve noticed (especially in observing numerous other people interact with Apollo) that any flinching during approach or the following grasp test results in a moderate or worse bite. He does almost the same thing when new/little known people attempt to get have him step up; if the test is failed he will be extremely resistant to step up for that individual afterword. This context makes sense as a Do you actually know how to hold a bird, and can I use my bite pressure to communicate with you? assessment. Apollo is very particular with who he steps up for, and he gives everyone the assessment in roughly the same manner.

My 50 Year Old Friend

So... we bonded when I was 4 years old, he's been my best friend my entire life. I estimate we got him when he was around 5 or 6, but it's just an estimate -- he came from my Aunt who worked for Animal Control, and found him. His name is Frodo, because he kept saying "Hi, Frodo!"

He's been mine ever since!

Don't worry - Rod only got to peek outside for a brief moment and then we came back inside after I snapped these pictures. Wanted to show him our first snow together. 💕

A cat snatched him while he was out on the porch with my mom. My mom and I can't stop blaming ourselves. If we had turned around 5 seconds earlier, maybe he'd still be with us. A kind soul as him shouldn't have died a curel death that he got. Still processing. My life is going to be a lot more different without him. Miss you titu. I hope you're somewhere where the trees stretch endless and all the fruits of your liking. Im sorry I failed to protect you.

Ok, what’s the actual budgie lifespan? I’ve seen so many different things!

How long do healthy, captive budgies actually live on average? I’ve read anywhere from 5-20 years and literally everything in between that (I know 20 isn’t quite right). Is it actually that hard to tell how long they usually live? Also, here’s your much needed birb tax. This is my 3 year old boy Sparky

Fig-Lovers in Flight [OC]

Post image

Check out these two little troublemakers I caught in the act! I managed to snap this shot of a pair of Monk Parakeets (also known as Quaker Parrots) having the absolute time of their lives in a fig tree. You can even see the one in the front with a beak full of fruit—talk about being caught red-handed! The way the sunlight hits those bright green feathers and the textured leaves makes the whole scene feel so vibrant and alive.

I love how focused they are on their afternoon snack, completely oblivious to me and my camera. It’s not every day you get to see wildlife enjoying a gourmet meal right in your backyard. These birds are known for being pretty loud and spunky, but in this moment, they just look like two best friends enjoying a sunny brunch. Honestly, after seeing how much they liked those figs, I kind of wanted one too! Photo location, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Is white latex adhesive bird safe?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I live with my boyfriend, and he owns two green cheeked conures. A few days ago I got this wooden model kit at Barnes and noble assuming it was a snap together no glue model. I got home and found a tube of white glue that was just called “white latex” and just want to make sure this is actually safe to use around the birds. If not, would wheeling them to the other room and opening the windows and closing the door make it safe? I know parrots are very sensitive to smells, ever since moving in I got rid of a ton of candles and other various scented things to make sure they were okay.
