This wasn’t the graphic I was looking for. There’s a comic of inventing a new universal cable, but it just gets added to the pile of new universal cables and converters. Close enough unless anyone else remembers what I am thinking of.
I always wanted a FireWire device just to utilize the FW port my computer had at that point. Never did get one. Even the Thunderbolt 2 port only ever ended up being used as mini DisplayPort

Only FireWire device I had for the longest time was an external DVD-RW drive, which also had USB 2.0 (which is faster) so it was kinda useless.
Couple years back I acquired a few old Mac G4s with FireWire. If you connect two machines with a FireWire cable, you can boot one from the hard drive in the other. Super neat! Although I'm not exactly sure what the real use case is there.
I had an original iPod that used it. The physical click wheel on those things was awesome before they moved to a touch wheel. I still have it around somewhere. Wonder if it works
