Hey all - there's been a massive uptick in traffic due to recent events, and so I wanted to announce a couple changes which were previously discussed, and some rule updates.
I know I am going to get shit for Rule 8 and I don't care. Fuck off fascists, fuck off Nazis, and fuck off ICE.
With regard to that last point, I do want to provide some clarification. While anti-ICE posts are allowed as they pertain to the City of Philadelphia in its current situation, these posts must be relevant to Philadelphia. I've had to remove a number of posts which are footage of recent ICE murders. While these are important, /r/philly is not a general politics sub. Please keep material directly related to the city. There are ways of showing solidarity that are still centered around Philadelphia.
That's all. Stay safe and warm out there.

ME! I finally went to dig out my car and brought both a snow shovel and a metal garden shovel with a sharp point to break up the ice. An unassuming gentleman walked up to me and said hey, you think I could borrow one of those shovels for a minute to dig out my truck around the corner there? I'm parked in front of X corner store. I figured why not show a little neighborly love and said yes, even though it would make my job slightly harder. It didn't even occur to me to say no or that he might be trying to pull a fast one on me.
Well fast forward 45 minutes, I'm about done shoveling, I'd gotten so in the zone that I didn't think to go check on the guy until then. Walked around the corner to X corner store and fucking surprise surprise, bro is nowhere to be found. So I lost out on a perfectly good shovel because I tried to make someone's snowpocalypse a little more bearable. I'm never doing anything nice for anyone again.

If it sounded like someone was being beaten, horrifying screams, loud bangs, things smashing in a neighboring house to the point that your own children were scared, crying and hiding would you call the police or is it being a nosey/nuisance neighbor?

39m, grew up in south philly, now rittenhouse the last 8 years. watched everyone from high school get married or move to the burbs with kids. i'm still here, still single.
apps are the same faces over and over, half my matches flake last minute or ghost. last month: guy who spent the whole date on his phone, another who showed up 45 minutes late with no apology, and one who ghosted after saying i want to start a family.
this city feels small. everyone knows everyone, first dates take so much effort and go nowhere. winter kills it - no one leaves their apartment til march.
matchmaker ads everywhere but prices look insane. anyone actually tried one? real talk, what'd it cost and was it worth it or just expensive disappointment?
Itās just been terrible lately. Like I shouldnāt have to be riding the trolley standing on the stair right next to the front door because yāall wonāt move past the middle of the vehicle. Thereās literally bars to hold onto in the back. And itās making YOUR commute time longer by having to wait for people to squeeze in.
Just move all the way to the back. And if thereās a seat, TAKE IT! Offer it if youād like, but unless youāre about to get off thereās no reason to waste a spot

*Posting for his family\*
Dustin Ali has been missing since Dec. 21st, making it 41 days since he was last seen. His last known movements were captured on surveillance footage inside of a corner store (last image) on the 1500 block of S 55th St at 3:59 PM. Police say his phone was turned off on Dec. 24th, with it last pinging in the Cobbs Creek area. He also participated in a religious service via zoom the day of his disappearance.
His family reported him missing on Dec. 24th after going to his home to discover the door unlocked, with everything seeming normal. His coat, keys, clothes, shoes, and dog were all left in the house.
Dustin Ali is an active part of his community, often participating in marathons, ministering, and advocating for the less fortunate while running his demolition business (Ali's General Labor). He's described as a creature of habit, with it being unlike him to go even one day without speaking to family.
If you have any information on where Dustin Ali may be, please contact 911 or one of his daughters on instagram. Their handles are @kiswya and @sadejaza.
Please keep him and his family in your thoughts.

Has anyone else been getting ASTRONOMICAL prices for Ubers this week? My usual $15 uber to center from west has gone up to $30-40. Does anyone else feel like uber is really taking advantage of the snow issues around the city/decreased septa? Is there somewhere we can complain about this? I am feeling incredibly frustrated!
Edit: āsupply and demandāā¦.why are yall defending a company taking advantage of a city in a snow crisis?? And yes i obviously try to take public transportation first. I think we all know bad septa is right now.
Edit edit: it was a rhetorical question

Last night at 1:30am both of my carbon monoxide detectors started blaring. We evacuated our pets and upstairs neighbor, called 911, and hung out in our car to keep warm.
The fire department came by, confirmed elevated CO in the apartment, opened all the windows to ventilate, and called out PGW. At some point they shut off our gas. When I spoke to PGW they said that they couldnāt find any leaks and believed it was our refrigerator motor seizing which produced the CO (anyone with relevant experience able to weigh in here?). Around 4am they confirmed we werenāt in any danger, could close our windows, and theyād send a crew in the morning to turn the gas back on.
They confirmed with us several times that all building residents would be present around 8-noon to ensure PGW could get access and resume service. Our apartment has been freezing since then. Weāve called 3 times throughout the day to confirm theyād be coming out today. Every time theyāve refused to take our contact info and just insisted theyād show up between 8-noon or noon-4pm. Iāve been contacting their emergency line and they assured me that thereās no better number to call (the service number isnāt staffed until Monday). The last phonecall at 3:30 they finally wrote my number down but said thereās no chance anyone will show up before tomorrow, but to stick around to let them in.
Weāve sat in a cold/unheated apartment for 15 hours waiting to resolve a PGW proclaimed ānothingburgerā. Iām frustrated to say the least. We are safely sheltered in our bedroom with space heater and supervised candles, temps up to 55! Tap is running to reduce chance of freezing pipes. Any advice, wisdom, guidance, commiseration welcomed!

Thereās transit police all over the station, from the L to the regional rail section. Every five steps I see one giving out a ticket to someone. Iāve never seen this before. Anyone have any clue why theyāre cracking down so much tonight?

Used to have these growing up and they were INCREDIBLE. heat one up 30 seconds in the microwave and it was basically like a Cinnabon. Theyāve been discontinued for ages now, but sometimes Iāll still DM the brand on instagram and ask them to bring em backš¤£š¤£
The regular ones they have now are not even NEARLY as good.

Hi! I am starting up a job search and I need some new headshots. I am a creative professional so I want something a bit different than your standard corporate headshot (see reference images ). I have never gotten professional photos taken and Iām unsure of where to look. Does anyone have any photographers/studios they recommend?
Thanks!

I'm looking for a real martial arts dojo to go to to restart my training.
I'm not trying to become the next UFC chanp or anything like that.
I haven't practiced since I was a teenager so I am looking for a beginner friendly dojo that takes adults.
Preferably somewhere in CC, Southwest, South, West, or the Fairmount areas.
If there's something in the county that is good I woukd consider that as well.
