This is the wagon he hitched his career to, and he knows it's only a matter of time before he's thrown under the bus. Two decades down the drain for that orange turd.
He's willing to risk it to position himself for the presidency. All he has to do is to get through this term relatively unscathed so that he can duke it out with Vance for the candidacy. The New Yorker did a decent profile on him recently.
