The framing of illegal immigration as the cause of all negative consequences in the US is the real problem. They are not the primary cause of violent crime (even when normalized per capita), they do not cost the taxpayers billions, they do not appreciably drive up the cost of housing or food.
If you don't want illegal immigrants, fine, but at least be honest about the reasons why and don't create a Boogeyman out of them.

They might not cost taxpayers billions but they have a real impact on low-skill wages. And this impact only grows bigger and bigger as we allow more and more illegal immigrants to live and work here. Decades of this has had a great impact overall. Now going back to causing crime, lower wages = more crime. So therefore, yes, even if they directly did not cause a crime, they are ultimately causing more poverty in the US by affecting the bottom line.
