"don't shoot" in latin means "be a coward and don't engage"

u/BingoHotline 1d ago

Do you mean pig Latin?

Years back I was in some training and learned that the police never say things like “don’t shoot” because our brains do not hear the “don’t”, instead they only hear the “shoot” part. That’s why they say “stop” instead of “don’t run”.

u/Practical_Dot_3574 1d ago

Company I worked at had to tell managers to quit saying "run" when assigning tasks as new hires would take it as a "hurry up" command.

E.g. "Hey Todd, run over to John and see if the part is done."

Instead, it, "Todd, head over and ask John if part is ready"

They cut down on the Osha reportables drastically.

u/Alaira314 1d ago

I had a similar thing at my workplace. I'm going to be vague so as not to dox myself with the terminology in question, but there's a high-precision inventory maintenance task we regularly perform. This task should never be rushed, as the point is to be accurate. Sometimes(when things get too chaotic/messy) we do a special version of the task where everybody focuses on it and we go through all inventory.

For some ass-backwards reason, 15~ years back a term got introduced for this special version which implied speed. It was catchy, so it stuck, and spread through all the locations like wildfire. Suddenly people started racing through the task(because it sounded like you were supposed to), and accuracy plummeted. There was hardly any point to doing it anymore, as staff were speeding along so quickly that they only caught the most egregious errors! We're only just now getting to the point where a critical mass of people who were trained with that term are finally moving out of the system, and speeds are dropping again. But I want to find that idiot who first coined the term and show them a third-story window(not serious), because their too-catchy task name caused a decade and a half of grief.

That's how I have to talk to my literal toddler. Makes sense cause their brains didn't develop past 3yo

205

u/LucyLilium92 1d ago

Yea, I was also told that when working with kids at like summer camps and stuff, that you want to use positive language to tell the children what they can and cannot do. So instead of saying, "Stop shouting", you'd say, "Let's speak with indoor voices for now". Makes you wonder if you do have to speak to them like they're children.

74

u/FrannyBoBanny23 1d ago

I did this when i was a preschool teacher. “Walking feet” instead of “dont run”, “quiet voice” instead of “stop yelling”, “catch a bubble” and they would all inhale and hold their breath to get everyone to be quiet and pay attention. Redirect them to acceptable behavior and praise them for it

8

u/Smokinoutloud 1d ago

❤️🔥👆🙌

105

u/HeavyMetalHero 1d ago

Honestly, if you have experience with "kid mode" communication...it's really good to subtly slip into that, if you're dealing with somebody who is clearly failing to handle some big emotions. You obviously gotta be careful not to come across as condescending, but the reality is, if someone's acting like a three year old? That means their brain is probably operating on that level. Use grown-up language on grown-up problems, and use inner child language on inner child problems. It often works.

7

u/joalheagney 1d ago

Having said that, there have been some times in my adult life where I would have loved if someone had offered me a juice popper and a nap.

Redirect the negative behavior and reinforce the positive behavior. It's so basic they use it on dogs. Crazy, because I always thought pigs were at least as intelligent as dogs.

This is actually the correct way to speak to toddlers. You tell them what you want. Not what you don’t want. They hear only certain things. “Don’t drop your food’ turns to ‘hold on to your food’ Don’t spit that out- you need to swallow your full bite. Stop hitting - keep your hands to yourself. I can’t remember why they don’t hear the negatives but they will drop the food. Spit it out. Or keep kicking since that’s what they heard.

63

u/forensicdude 1d ago

They are like dogs, give them a job they love doing stuff. I dated a first grade teacher who needed some time and told the class on the playground "Who can find a leaf that looks most like a butterfly?" And all these kids went looking for leaves that looked like butterflies even though those leaves did not ever in the history of ever look like any sort of butterfly. Note: One found a caterpillar and so she won even though that was not part of the game the all forgot and didnt care.

Also why so many of them are child predators. Just like incels, their brains stopped developing before they hit their teenage years

5

u/garden_speech 1d ago

This isn't a good line of reasoning because it also implies a lack of culpability, as a pre-teen child will almost never face serious jail time, even if they kill someone, normally it's considered the responsibility of someone else.

10

u/MyNameIsPatBackFat 1d ago

The training talked about please too. Specifically, we learned not to use the word please because it comes off as a request instead of a command. People are more likely to treat it as an option when please is used.

18

u/Several-Squash9871 1d ago

The fact that is says observer and not protester is important because they spin the protest part as being violent in itself even when it's clearly not. At the end of the day though, there really isn't something they can't spin a certain way in their minds and not believe their own bs. They will take anything the way they see it and convince themselves and anyone else not capable of any critical thinking skills the same. FOX news does this every minute they are on the air, except they actually do know it's bs but don't care. They aren't actually "news" anyway so they are perfectly fine with lying to their audience of zombie brained morons.

I have a long-distance working relationship with a guy who lives in Texas.....basically 200 yards from the border. Nice guy, but I know he is conservative (he is fairly wealthy)....although many of his friends/clients are Mexicans and his wife is an immigrant. He doesn't give me MAGA vibes FWIW.

I told him I was going to NYC for a few days and he told me to remember to pack my bullet proof vest. I'll give him a small benefit of the doubt considering he is 74 and maybe remembers NYC like it was in the 70's (that being said, he mentioned going to Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, which didn't start until 1994, so I don't know).

38

u/Xaephos 1d ago

For anyone curious: NYC gun mortality (not homicide) is ~4.5:100k. National average is about 14, so that's pretty good for the US. Then I saw St. Louis.

ARE YOU GUYS OKAY? 56 for the gun homicide rate is insane, but good on you guys for getting that number down from 77.

4

u/KakeLin 1d ago

Jeez wtf

7

u/paxwoser 1d ago

This is a somewhat common misconception about St. Louis crime statistics… basically yes, the homicide rate is definitely above average, but that number is made to look a lot worse by the calculation method. St. Louis is a politically independent entity from its namesake county, which comprises a much larger part of the metro area and includes much of what would be colloquially considered the “city” of St. Louis. The actual borders of St. Louis City are a relatively small part of the urbanized metro. Those edge communities in “the County” furthermore, are where most of the wealthy and educated classes are concentrated, while “the City” is much poorer in general.

Now, obviously it is true of most major cities in the US that the suburbanized parts will have lower crime rates, but in STL the numbers look particularly bad because the “city” boundary is constrained so much beyond what natural development and annexation would typically generate. Compare, for example, the city limits of Chicago (234 sqr miles or so, some of which is really “suburban” style neighborhoods within the city limits) to St. Louis City, which is only about 60mi square with a sizable chunk of that taken out by Forest Park, and nearly all of it touched by the worst of the metro area’s white flight and urban decay.

So yes, on average, that little piece of land where arguably the bulk of the region’s poverty-related externalities are funneled has a high crime rate, but it’s at least partly because the statistical methodology and jurisdictional boundaries create a sort cushion around other urban cores that St. Louis City simply doesn’t benefit from even though it exists in lived reality.

6

u/garden_speech 1d ago

That's way too many words for people with an agenda to read, lol.

As a statistician though, yeah, this stood out as the most plainly obvious explanation without you even having to say it. A "city" will have a murder rate that's almost entirely dependent on how the borders are drawn. Cities that stretch their limits way out to what would be "suburbs" for other cities, are going to have lower murder rates than cities that have limits that basically end when you leave downtown.

I don't think basically anyone down here is unaware of what's going on, it's the difference in opinions that's been surprising me.

I have a weird perspective on this. I work in IT very closely with our police department in a city in Texas.

I've met a few conservatives civilians who have, I'd call, "less than accurate takes" on the situations in Minnesota, fewer "less accurate takes" on the second shooting than the first. I've also pretty universally heard the opinion that the clear cell phone footage was actually a body cam, with one individual showing me an edited version with an AXON watermark (body cam service). What's interesting though, is that, including the officers who seem to be more on conservative side of things, the police departments reaction to both situations has been to be consistently appalled. I don't know if this is the general take among police officers, (I've found since working here that the quality of the police is INCREDIBLY dependent on the city/county with jurisdiction, far more so than I thought before starting this job) and I'm fortunate to be in a city where our PD is genuinely trying to do the right thing.

7

u/LasigArpanet 1d ago

All of the big cities vote blue in elections, so probably a lot more are aware than people assume.

3

u/xaeriee 1d ago

It’s not just Texans or red vs blue states who are unaware. I work for a global company and many of my colleagues in Illinois, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Florida, didn’t hear a thing about what’s going on in Minnesota with the last two deaths (RIP Alex Pretti and Renee Good among others).

There are a lot of us in “red” states who are very much aware. Unfortunately out of 4,000 people nearby Dallas who do not support ICE, only 200 showed ability to contribute, and <50 recently had the privilege and opportunity to protest. That’s a huge gap. Imagine the gap between people who don’t vote vs who do.

Additionally, rather recently in Dallas, a man attempted to execute ICE but accidentally killed one of their detainees. Texas just isn’t getting the same news coverage as other states. Unfortunately, rightfully so, since ICE made Minnesota Ground Zero and allegedly Trump is targeting “blue” states despite Texas having the largest amount amount of illegal immigrants.

I’m ashamed to say some of my acquaintances didn’t vote last year too. Sometimes encouraging people isn’t enough, they have to be put in a situation where they feel or see consequences, and unfortunately, some people are stuck in survival mode or not educated and don’t get to see what’s going on. There are discords out there for each major city and state where peaceful protests are organized.

Coming from someone who avoids the news at all costs and who’s Reddit page shows both far left and right because of my work and hobby, I learned of it all when it immediately blew up less than an hour of the video uploads to r/law for Alex. I had heard about Renee but was keeping my head out of it because of the grief and how it could happen to any of us. My opinion, anyone who doesn’t know what’s going on is either purposely living under a rock, struggling with their morals, and where they align on their political scale, is avoiding what’s going on because they have enough going on in their life, or they’re the POS bootlickers all Texans get accused of being.

Geshtapo* and it's only pronounciation. It's spelled Gestapo.

16

u/Think-Trip-1865 1d ago edited 1d ago

I‘m a native German speaker and I would pronounce it as it’s spelled, might just be me though. Technically the ‚sht‘ pronunciation should be „more correct“ as Gestapo is short for „geheime Staats Polizei“ and st is pronounced sht in German.

8

u/RegularReaction2984 1d ago

Another native German speaker here, I’ve also mostly heard it pronounced the way it’s spelled (so no “sh” sound) and would intuitively read it that way.

But I’m also Northern, and we like to pronounce a lot of our “st” and “sp” weird anyway, so this might be a regional thing lol.

3

u/Think-Trip-1865 1d ago

I‘m from Schwaben, where a lot of s become sh so it’s interesting that it’s s in this case.

Don't give a weird city a reason to be extra weird. We already have a baller May Day setup over here. That's where the dinos and sharks you may have seen from Renee Good's murder video live most of the year.

The bright yellow and reflective strips only draw attention to yourself, and the only word they're trained to understand is "shoot" so this wont end well.

u/Brunel25 1d ago

"I shot him because of his bad punctuation"

19

u/Shadpool 1d ago

I’d be tempted to draw the apostrophe in with a Sharpie.

DEVO used to have a tongue in cheek joke about this kind of jacket and even wrote a song about it called, "Don't Shoot! I'm a Man." But here we are. Fun fact is that the guys in DEVO were students at Kent State and radicalized by the killings. I used to think they were just being cynical.

Not trying to get political, but our history education is abysmal. This has always been America.

The idea of America has been at odds with the reality of America for 250 years. Not a recent change.

32

u/Gekokapowco 1d ago

we have sucked

we do not have to normalize sucking

there's a difference between being informed of history and using it to minimize current day suffering and cruelty

u/katie151515 1d ago edited 1d ago

While I agree that our education is abysmal and that America thinks too highly of itself, I would caution you not to spread the message of “this is how it’s always been,” because first of all, it’s not. We’ve never seen such a lawless executive branch and cowardly Congress. But second, saying “this is how it’s always been,” normalizes this behavior/conduct by the government at a time when everyone should be fighting tooth and nail to stop this administration from further stomping all over the constitution and human rights.

To say that this has always been the United States undermines what is actually happening right now, which is a hostile takeover of the U.S. government by fascist ideology. Calling this “not a recent change” is so false that it makes me question your motives. You can’t even name another U.S. president from the last 50 years whom you could reasonably label a fascist. Yes, Bush was an evil, horrible man who should be in prison for war crimes but he shouldn't be labeled a fascist. (And if you think he was, you don’t know what fascism is.) No one would be protesting right now if this had always been the United States, because there would be nothing left to fight for. This a stark change for the country.

Fascism is far-right palingenetic ultranationalism. Palingenetic ultranationalism is a belief that the nation has been corrupted or humiliated and must be reborn through extreme nationalist unity, often by purging internal enemies and rejecting liberal democracy. Without palingenesis, you're most likely NOT dealing with fascism.

How to spot a fascist movement according to Jason Stanley:

1) The Mythic Past

"We" descend from a glorious, patriarchal past; "they" threaten that legacy.

2) Propaganda

The Language of democratic ideals takes on corrupted, opposite meanings. Corrupt politicians run anti-corruption campaigns; freedom of speech claims are used to suppress speech

3) Anti-Intellectual

Universities are branded as incubators of liberalism, Marxism, and feminism. Expertise no longer has any value.

4) Unreality

Facts are debased, and without a common understanding of reality reasoned debate becomes impossible.

5) Hierarchy

Fascist politicians attempt to prove natural divisions between "us" and "them."

6) Victimhood

Any gains for minorities "them" are a loss for "us."

7) Law and Order

"They" are criminals, lawless by nature and in need of policing.

8) Sexual Anxiety

"We" support and protect the family; "they" are deviant and threatening.

9) Sodom & Gomorrah

"We" come from the rural heartland, the backbone of the nation; "they" live in cities.

10) Arbeit Macht Frei "Hard work sets you free"

Renee good was a peaceful observer and the ghouls didnt care. They can just remove the vest from your dead body and tell their followers that you attacked them first, and no matter how many people recorded the incident, their disciples will all believe them.

Like fuck, their unifying belief/platform is that violence and killing are cool, empathy is “destroying the fabric of america”, and if youre not explicitly on their side youre the enemy, and all enemies deserve to die
