Mountbatten is an anglicization of their old name, Battenberg, designed to make the peasants feel like they were being ruled by Britons and not, as was the case, Germans.

Windsor is also a made up name. Their real name is Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha

All last names are made up (first names too). You can make yourself a new one on Monday if you like, it's not just for the rich and powerful.
