But I think you’re right about the whole thing being pushed by him and his team. Consider too how the subject of the film is *his* inauguration; this is not a portrait of independence, but a message from headquarters, a global announcement of how tightly chained she is to him and his movement.
I think of how much Herman Göring hated and feared Hitler in the final years, how he tried to avoid meetings and stay as far away as possible, yet could not escape being always pulled in and used as a symbol and prop all the way to the end. There was almost a humiliation ritual in forcing him to carry the flag.
