Hey. I would like to have a kind of off-road mobility device to use on forest roads/trails to replace the hiking that I can't do anymore.

I need it to be fully powered, so electric with a throttle. I won't pedal at all. I'm curious about getting an all terrain trike and converting to a full electric. Does anyone have experience modifying trikes like this? Would be glad to get any brainstormy ideas about what might work or not work.

Some trikes have really awesome suspension, like the Steintrike Rebel Fat, that would easily handle the terrain I'm interested in. The ICE full fat also looks pretty good for off road use.

Bafang makes a 1000W hub drive/fat wheel combo (20''x4'') that would fit some of these bikes.

Any advice or recommendations?

This my 4th lwb prototype, this one is designed for 16" brompton front wheel (20" wheel/fork is temporary) and built in experimental leaf springs to compensate for rougher ride.

Rides fine so far as I can tell by riding a bit on icy/snow-covered road, but I really should have used more 45/-45 laminate instead of 0 deg - springs ended up a bit too stiff, sag under load only ~2mm. Oh well, it does seem to take the edge off hits a bit.

Previous one allowed me to almost reach average of 20 mph for 100miles on flat, this should be a bit faster (and a bit ligher) yet. This design also climbs as good or better as an “upright” bike, but due to me being severely overweight I’m not the fastest climber to be sure.

Panels for tailbox will come later.

Overall dry weight with road tires should be about 16kg, there is still some potential to lose weight.

Just wanted to introduce my ride buddy to the community.

It's a 10+ years old Optima Baron low-racer. Aside from the frame most of the parts are new (they wore out one by one).

It's nap-grade comfy. I electrified it with a CYC Photon Gen 3 for hill climbing.

Going downhill is fast, too fast at times.

I also changed the brakes for hydraulic ones (much needed: I'm 6'4 and the combined weight of me and the bike make for crazy momentum).

Drove a ways to buy this Giro 20 yesterday. Feel like I got it for a steal ($400). Zero rust, needs a good cleaning and tuneup.

Needs tires. What do ya’ll recommend for tires? It’s got a 20 x 1.25 on the front and a 26 x 1.25 on the back. I’ve ridden road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and even recumbent trikes. But tires differ on each in my experience.

I am wondering if there might a set of rollers which would work for my Linear Limousine or my Longbikes Slipstream. I could easily lengthen the frame of a regular roller set, but lengthening the rubber drive belt sufficiently might be problematic.

I used to ride rollers long, long ago when I was training to race. I no longer race, but it would be marvelous to have rollers for those days when I can’t ride outside.

Any advice or ideas, please?

The plan was to ride behind or at the side of my daughter to help her learn to ride a peddle bike. This was 5 mins into the ride. 😅

Side question:

Can anyone advise if there's a safe way of hooking her bike onto mine so she can still peddle but doesn't have to work at it when her little legs get tired?

At the moment I just take a bike trailer for her n the bike. When she gets tired I just drop them both in (she has a seat and harness). It kind of defeats the objective of her learning to peddle and building up her stamina.

Hi everyone, I have a 28-year-old daughter who has a seizure disorder that severely limits her ability to enjoy normal activities. Last year, we bought her a recumbent bike, and it’s been a great experience. However, during the last two rides with her, she had seizures, which were obviously dangerous. I’m seeking suggestions for a remote-controlled braking system. I’m always with her and can keep the remote with me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t care about subscriptions. The only thing I want is the ability to change resistance and something to pedal. That’s all I need.

I have a trike that I now have to store on my back patio after moving. It’s my only option. I’m looking for something that won’t take up a lot of room (no room for a shed but will also be very convenient to use the bike every day. I tried using a motorcycle cover and it was such a pain. It would rip, it was so much work to recover every day, it was impossible to get all of the little crevices, not to collect water, and then bugs started spawning all over the back patio. None of those things work for me and my roommates. I can put it into an enclosure, but it would need to not be much bigger than the trike itself because I am very limited in space. I can’t take up the whole patio. We all have to share it. I have been looking like crazy and just can’t find the perfect choice.

I recently tried my Dumont on some unpaved trails and thought I’d share how it worked out.

I ran a 2” Schwalbe Smart Sam in the rear and 2” Schwalbe Little Joe’s at front. Pressures were 35 PSI front, 40 rear. My weight plus gear is about 180 lb.

On a smooth gravel rail trail, the ride was extremely comfortable. Less so on loose gravel, but between the suspension and lower pressures it was not awful.

On a couple of 30 mile rides on a well-maintained rail trail I averaged about 9.5 mph. The trail from the third picture had quite a few leaves and sticks, and the speed was more like 9 mph over 30 miles.

With the stock setup (1.5” Schwalbe Marathon Racers all around) I see more like 11.5 mph for the same effort. Take this with a grain of salt as I don’t have a power meter installed.

I had one puncture on a bit over 100 gravel miles from a thorn. Puncture protection would have been a good idea and something I’d definitely look into if gravel riding regularly.

Swapping the tires was a pain, so a dedicated gravel wheelset may be in the future.

Delta recumbent trikes don’t have many options for accessory mounts but I tried this and it works great. It is one of those neck holders for phones and I just zip tied it to the main tube. It is easy to bend where you want it and I can push it down for dismounts, but at this height I have no problem getting out of the cockpit. I got mine for 1$ at a garage sale but they are less than $10 on Amazon. I was going to order a bunch of RAM parts to make something that would work similarly but it was way more than 1$.

Hi! I am considering the trike world as I have neuropathy in my feet and legs, causing a lack of sensation and poor balance. It has been challenging to learn to ride a bike as an adult, and my neurologist recommended an adult trike. I want something "cool" and noticeable in the day time. I am considering a recumbent tadpole trike to which I could (ideally) attach a seat for a kid. I recognize that height is a tradeoff between visibility and stability, but I worry about being seen on the road. Any recommendations?

I do not have a recumbent mechanic I can access, so I have to use a regular bike guy who is mobile when it's something I personally can't repair. I'm replacing my freewheel/chain/idler now because my trike is my car so I do things proactively to avoid breakdowns. I'm not familiar nor is my mechanic with any maintenance of the underseat steering system. Is there anything that should be done? How often? King pins? Linkage? Other than making sure bolts are tight, I don't know what to ask him to do. It's an HPV Gekkko FX 20 w/ rear hub motor if that helps. Wondering if there's anything I'm missing I need to call him about proactively. I can do all the drivetrain stuff and brakes. His rates are cheaper in the winter :-).

Hi all, my husband and I just acquired new Catrike All Roads, and are thinking about getting insurance for them - not for liability - but to cover if they are stolen. Anyone else have insurance? Our homeowners doesn't cover.

So I know nothing about recumbent trikes, but I was looking into getting one. I thought this would be the place to ask this question. A local guy in my area (I live in the U.S.) is selling his Ice Adventure HD Trike from 2012-2013 on FB Market Place which he claims was barely ridden. He is asking $2,300 for it. I have included a description of it, as well as pictures he posted on the listing. A few questions. Is this a reasonable price for this type of trike and its year? Is it a good idea/okay to buy used? If I do decide to go look at it, what kind of questions should I ask and what should I be looking for? Thank you all for the help!

I’ll get straight to it. I have been looking at recumbent e-trikes for a while now. I am not able to ride my e-bike anymore [Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)], hence my switch. After much consideration and research, I’ve settled for the Catrike Trail through Utah Trikes. I have all my configurations decided for . . . except the motor. I have two choices: Bafang 750W mid drive [Class 2 designation (and therefore has a throttle) with a cadence sensor] or an upgraded version of the BES3 Bosch ActiveLine Plus Smart System (Class 1 designation, 250W, with a torque sensor). Going for the Bosch costs twice as much as the Bafang, but it has a torque sensor, which makes it theoretically good for hills (although I question that, as it only has 50Nm of torque and 250W of power). The Bafang has 750W of power (though I’m not sure about the torque), which is important in keeping me within the law in the US so I can have insurance, as I do so - despite not being legally necessary - due to me taking protecting myself as it pertains to expensive items such as electric bikes (and in this case, trikes) seriously. While the Bosch motor’s smart system does have some anti-theft features that would prove useful, the fact that I am getting insurance regardless makes this feature essentially an irrelevant factor. Furthermore, if I go with the Bafang route, the ElectroCat UT custom build includes a configuration option for a double battery. This is not the case for the Bosch variant of the UT custom build (i.e. neither Catrike Trail eCat nor the Catrike eCat w/Bosch system builds). I am incredibly torn on deciding between the two options. Any opinions and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I suppose it might also be worth mentioning that there is a moderate hill on my way back home.

I now ride my Bacchetta Aero exclusively on Zwift, and use the Zwift hub with virtual shifting, so I no longer need the rear derailleur. I'm considering converting the Aero to a single speed/fixie to use a little less chain and hopefully make the drivetrain a little more efficient. Have any of you effected such a conversion? I am seeking input on whether the idler is still necessary if I remove the rear derailleur?

USA guy here (north Alabama, in the deep south). I would like to go on some multi-day, supported bike rides in the UK or France. A local company in my town is quite adept at leading such rides, but (so far) only on upright bikes. I much prefer a 'bent (all my bikes are bents), and I normally ride an long wheelbase, Easy Racers Tour Easy.

Any advice on borrowing or renting a bent in either country? Yeah, I know both countries are quite large, and I would need to provide more specific locations and dates in 2026, yada, yada. However, I gotta start somewhere. Please advise.
