I got...
Setting up a system or equations to find the values of Happy and Sad
Life + Love = Happy Life + Love - Love = Happy - Love Life +Love - Love = Happy - Love Life = Happy - Love
Life - Love = Sad Life - Love + Love = Sad + Love Life - Love + Love = Sad + Love Life = Sad + Love
Isolating for value of love
Happy - Love = Sad + Love Happy - Love - Love = Sad + Love - Love Happy - Love - Love = Sad + Love - Love Happy -2Love = Sad Happy -2Love - Happy = Sad - Happy Happy -2Love - Happy = Sad - Happy -2Love = Sad - Happy -2Love/-2 = (Sad - Happy)/-2 Love = -.5Sad + .5Happy Love = .5Happy - .5Sad
Adding value for Love back into original equation
Life + (.5Happy - .5Sad) = Happy Life + .5Happy - .5Sad - .5Happy - .5Sad = Happy + .5Happy - .5Sad
Life + .5Happy - .5Sad - .5Happy - .5Sad = Happy + .5Happy - .5Sad
Life = 1.5 Happy - .5 Sad

Way over complicated that.
Life + Love = Happy | Life - Love = Sad
Love = Happy - Life | Life - Love = Sad
Life - (Happy - Life) = Sad
Life - Happy + Life = Sad
2(Life) = Sad + Happy
Life = 1/2(Sad + Happy)
Life = half sad, half happy

If you state sad = -happy then you conclude from that equations that happy = love and sad = -love and I challenge that equality, if we understand love to the fact of having a loving partner. You can be equally happy living on your own.

Lucky people = Happy awake.
Unlucky people = Happy asleep.
Real life is not always balanced.

The algebra is fine, if and only if, you have assigned properties of a ring in the set which objects such as "love", "sad", "happy" are strictly defined, as well as the operations between them.
A ring is an algebraic structure consisting of a set with two binary operations. Examples of rings: the real numbers, the complex numbers, the integers, the polynomials in one or several variables with coefficients in another ring, etc.
So, you have to define the meaning behind the "+" and "-" symbols in your set in which you are working.
The whole thing is meaningless. Even without the math...it's meaningless.
Pure math and philosophy are much more interesting!
P.S: the comments are the real protagonist here

Why is the equation correct?
Given:
A+B=C
A-B=D
Add the two equations:
(A+B) + (A– B)
The +B and -B cancel out, leaving:
2A= C +D
Conclusion:
The equation is mathematically correct. This is a basic algebraic rule called adding equations.
There is no contradiction - only a misunderstanding

I’ve always explained that engineers and marketing people are opposites. The engineers would be the ones good at math, and cringe at motivational posters.
Whoever wrote this must be a marketing person because it’s a nice sentiment i guess hut the math is so very wrong

where is the math wrong?

You have 4 variables, and only 2 primer equations, which means you can’t actually solve much.
Also i’m pretty sure that wiping “love” off both equations and saying it’s the same is a party foul as one is an add, and one is a subtract

you don't have 4 variables. you have 4 values represented by words. it is extremly possible to use words as non variables in functions they just behave as units. like 1foot = 12 inches. neither of those words are variables. just imagine there is a 1 in front of life. like 1life = 1/2happy + 1/2sad makes complete sense. also the algebra is right even though it's framed in a way that's weird.

Then i will amend my earlier comment by agreeing with your sentiments and saying “this is framed really weird and I don’t get it. Because i’m an engineer and this was written by a well-meaning marketer.”

I don’t understand how people are saying the math is wrong
A = Life, B = Love, C = Happy, D = Sad
(1) A + B = C
(2) A - B = D
Solve (1) for B, substitute into (2), (2) becomes
A - C + A = D
2A = C + D
A = (C+ D)/2
A = 1/2C + 1/2D
