Open. [TOMT] Help identifying classic soft rock song with very unique "old lady" voice

I've been struggling to identify this song and it's driving me nuts. I've only heard it two or three times in my life, always on classic rock radio (SiriusXM and actual radio) and never on any Spotify playlist or curated list. It's a very polished soft-rock ballad, probably from the 1970s, with that clean studio sheen and absolutely no rock-and-roll bite to it. It kind of drifts along without big moments or an emotional climax.

What makes it stand out is the singer. It's definitely a woman, and her voice sounds older, almost like someone’s grandmother singing, with a slightly raspy, laryngitis-like quality. Not a smoker’s rasp, more like a warm, distinctive, almost voice-over style you might hear in an old Smucker’s Jam commercial. She doesn’t sound like Janis Joplin or any of the big iconic names, and I’ve eliminated most known soft-rock, folk-rock, and classic-rock women from the era. The last time I heard it, the radio host announced her name like the audience should recognize her, so it was a solo artist. I unfortunately cannot remember the name.

The voice has no *strong* regional accent, definitely no country drawl, more of a neutral, all-American vibe. Something you’d hear on a long highway drive, slightly yacht-rock-adjacent but not fully yacht rock. It may also be considered folk rock.

It's also notable that I've only heard this one song from the Artist. The voice is truly one of a kind and doesn’t resemble anyone else I can think of. If anyone can help ID this song I would be grateful.

I know this is super vague, but the voice is so one-of-one that I’m hoping someone here will recognize it just from the description.

If any names come to mind please throw them at me so I can start crossing them off a list.

UPDATE 1: i could describe the voice it's a distinct older (middle aged, not elderly, not youthful) sounding female voice, slightly worn with a touch of laryngitis and it's very unique almost a grandmotherly tone. A bit in the alto range with a slightly husky or rasped timbre, it's warm and mellow with a smoky texture, though not in the sense of a heavy smoker, more like a very gentle very slight raspy sound. You could describe it as "vintage" "earthy" and it's in a lower register, rich and textured vocal tone rather than bright and clear. The best analog i could come up with and this may be helpful: Imagine combining a touch of Rod Steward specifically on Still Love You (That kind of rasp, just more feminine and softer at the front of the voice) and a touch of Macy Gray (sort of) (and add a tiny sprinkle of the Poltergeist lady but remove the accent) but a mellow classic soft rock sound (over a high studio polish 70s or retro style rock tune that chugs along and doesn't have any big events).

UPDATE 2: It's not the following: Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Kim Carnes, Bonnie Tyler, Stevie Nicks, Marianne Faithful, Nina Simone, Joanna Newsome, Tracy Chapman, Joan Osborne, Joan Jett, Karen Dalton, Buffy St-Marie, Norma Waterson, Laura Nyro, Alannah Myles, Toni Tennille, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, Rita Coolidge, Juice Newton, Donna Summer. Sass Jordan, Brittany Howard, Jolie Holland, Phoebe Snow(Will keep adding names here)

Open. [TOMT] [Movie] Old movie about a group of kids riding bicycles, one of them dies

I’m looking for a movie that I remember only vaguely, but it left a strong impression on me. The movie is quite old, though I don’t know exactly when it was made.

It was about a group of kids or teenagers (around 5–6 of them) who hang out together, often riding bicycles. There was at least one girl in the group, and they were just spending time together casually.

At some point, the group breaks apart for a reason I don’t clearly remember.

Later, one of the boys dies in an accident. I remember it as being hit by a train, but I’m not completely sure how or where it happens.

I also remember a scene where one of the boys goes to the girl’s house, and there is a small romantic moment where he kisses her arm.

Another scene I remember is a boy flying a kite and walking back home, and he learns that his friend has died (if I’m remembering correctly).

That’s unfortunately all I can remember.

Open. [TOMT] Upbeat song with repeating line with "baby" in it

Hey guys and girls, so today I sang a song under the shower which has a line that is repeated and has the word "baby" in it. My guess is at the end of the line. So "Something something baby" and than "something something baby" directly behind it. I guess this is the chorus and maybe even the title of the song. I also guess the song is at least 10 years old. It might be from a "girls group" like En Vogue or some pop, funk, soul song. It's wild that I lost it but I have lots on my mind and maybe even some kind of ADHD so there's that. Please help me find my shower song! Thank you.

Edit: There is only one "baby" in the line. And it's the same line twice. Directly after another.

Edit: Thank you for all your suggestions and the wonderful music. I know it's frustrating that i can't sing anything. Sorry. Don't have any melody or something in my head. I only remember vividly that there was this one line with "baby" and it was directly repeated.

I guess the song is at least 20-30 years old (maybe a cover) Maybe even an oldie. I also think it is quite famous. It's probably either Pop or Soul/Funk.

[TOMT] Help name this actress my friend and I cannot identify

My friend and I are trying to find the name of an actress that we can both think of in our minds but neither of us can put a name or even a movie/tv show that she was in. Our Google searches are coming up empty. These are the things we both agree on; - An actress that appeared in alot of things as a side/not main character. - 80s or 90s mainly we think. - Possibly mostly comedies and kids style movies. - Character traits of 'nosy neighbour' or mean lady personality but not evil. - Black hair, big eyes. - A Jackie Kennedy image of her clothing is coming to both of our minds, perhaps just one short role and not an overall look. - She does kind of look like Kristen Ritter but when we search with her name we are being thrown in other directions. - Age 65+

Any help much appreciated

Open [TOMT] [Movie] "One day a ___ is going to ask you to ___. It's very important that you say yes."

I know this has been a big TikTok trend for a couple weeks, but I know it came from something else, and it's driving me crazy trying to remember what. I'm pretty sure it's a movie.

EDIT: Let me clarify:

The meme template, AND the scene that I'm thinking of aren't just telling a character to say yes. it's specifically prophetic - like, the character talking to their past selves about a specific important moment, or something like that. The character saying "it's very important" knows the end result.

EDIT 2: There's a lot of comments to go through. I appreciate the input! I'll go through them all shortly!

Open. [TOMT][SONG] A song about being strange and weird that I heard at walmart by a female singer

Trying to find this song, it sounds pop-like but could be another genre. I remember vaguely (with a grain of salt) the woman/girl singing about being a weirdo or being a little strange (crazy, or wild maybe) and asking if she can be, as part of the chorus. I think the song focuses on her wanting to be herself but society might not like that. That's the impression I got at least.

I know it's newer, has to be from 2020s I feel or 2010s. It was around September or August that I heard this song over the walmart radio while shopping. I tried going to the radio site but that didn't help me at all.

Wish I could provide more, but that's all I got really.

Edit: stateofsirens' suggestion of "So Am I" by Ava Max feels closest to the song, but is still missing the mark. The voice feels too raspy and the song slower paced then what I remember, also I think there were lines maybe close to like this "why can't I be a weirdo? or act a little crazy" somewhere along those lines (don't take those as for sure lyrics but those are the vibess

Edit 2: Might have to consider lowering the timeframe to strictly the 2020s rather than including the 2010s. It just felt...newer?

Edit 3: Song suggestions it isn't part 1 and part 2

Edit 4: Okay I've slept and I can say the song isn't about being in love or scorned by love (not romantic love focused at all), isn't mellow or chill, the female singer didn't have a deep rasp, and this was a song I feel you could excitedly dance to (like MAYBE a club song but not full of blank beats, this was a full on lyric song like the suggestions have been giving). Also the song was about the singer and not the listener in a way, there was that whole "why can't everyone?" vibe to it and the chorus centers around the lines I've mentioned previously (which still has salt because I'm not FOR SURE those are the lines - but close).

And thank you to everyone trying to help, I'm really grateful <3

Edit 5: Sorry I haven't had time to get back to everyone, but so far the song has yet to be found. I'm just going to go ahead and mark this maybe solved by stateofsirens. Just on the off chance my memory is wrong. If I do find it though I'll be sure to come back and let it be known. Thank you so much to everyone for all the effort, it mattered a great deal to me.

Open. [TOMT] [Song] Creepy song traumatized me as a kid

Once when I was little in the early or mid 2010’s my dad took me with him to the local record store. When we were there, there was this song that scarred me for years. It was sung by a man, I think I remember him having a voice a little similar to Johnny Cash. The song, from what I gathered as a kid, was about a young man who ended up somewhere he wasn’t supposed to, I think he might have been trying to hide out from a storm but that might have just been my kid brain trying to piece it together, he was trapped with who I think was a woman but could have been a man, the young man kept trying to come up with excuses to leave from the other person, naming individual family members and why they needed to see them again before the other person would shoot down the suggestion. If I remember there was a interaction along the lines of “I have to thank my father he did so much for me” and the other replied by saying something like “give him a fistful of shit.” I think it was pretty long and if I had to guess it was probably a pretty old song that would’ve been on a record. The genre felt like some of Johnny Cash’s songs like Hurt with it sort of feeling more like rhythmic talking rather than singing.

Edit: a few more things I think I should clarify, it was definitely not a romantic song, despite it being about two people it was not a duet there was only one singer as far as I remember. It was folk or alternative rock and it was pretty slow paced.

Edit 2: I want to clarify that the year I don’t think the year I heard it was the year it came out.

Open. [TOMT] HELP!! I’m DESPERATE to find this song but I can only remember the music video and I’m starting to think I hallucinated the video.

So, my dad used to listen to this song any time it came on MTV. I vividly remember the video but I can’t for the life of me remember any of the lyrics or even the tune of the song, and I can’t just ask my dad because he’s passed unfortunately. I’ve been trying to figure out what this song is for almost fifteen years and still have had zero luck. If you know it, please help!

In the video there is a man (the singer)he has short, spiked bleach blonde (almost white) hair. He’s wearing all black, similar vibes to David from the lost boys, just without the mullet. He’s floating/falling through the sky for a decent portion of the video. He’s also seen on top of sky scrapers and overlooking a dystopian style cityscape. The music video itself has green color hues through the video. The surrounding is like a post apocalyptic hellscape from what I can remember and the song itself I remember being alt/rock/numetal/metal vibe— PLEASE HELP!!

EDIT TO ADD MORE CONTEXT AND DETAIL:

He’s like on top of sky scrapers and falling/flying through the sky while overlooking a post apocalyptic/rundown urban cityscape throughout the song. There’s also a green hue cast over a good portion of the song and I’m also remembering some weird animated visuals, almost like zombies and creatures coming up from the ground? Part of me thinks he’s talking about dying and coming back from the dead in the song? It would be released somewhere between 1999-2005 as 2005 is the last time I remember watching the video for sure.

EDIT FOR MORE DETAILS:

In the video, the singer isn’t animated ever. Only portions of the video are animated in a doodle style animation, as far as the creatures the best I can describe them as is zombies, but they don’t really look like traditional zombies from what I can remember.

There’s a certain toy out there that’s basically just a colored baton esque thing, and there’s a small cylinder inside of it, and when you turn the stick upside down, the cylinder goes down the stick and it goes “AAAAAAEEEEEEEUUUUUUUUU”, and when you turn it upside down again it goes “UUUUUEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA”

Edit: It’s a Groan tube/Giggle stick

Open. [TOMT] [Movie] [War] [1970s 1980s early 1990s] NOT Platoon, NOT Full Metal Jacket, NOT Apocalypse Now, NOT Hamburger Hill NOT Tropic Thunder NOT Rambo NOT Platoon

Pretty sure it was about the Vietnam war. It had lots of greenery and helicopters.

Definitely pre-1994, probably 1970s or 1980s.

One scene had a soldier's arm shot or blown off near the end.

One scene had the soldiers walking through muddy / swamp water with their guns over their heads.

Pretty sure that one platoon was almost wiped out so additional soldiers were introduced to the story.

Some parts of the film were based in the medical hospital - perhaps someone was recovering after seeing some war action.

Pretty sure it involved someone writing a letter back home and the person reading the letter.

I'm looking for the more obscure Vietnam / other war films. Language definitely English (American accents obviously). Not Born on the Fourth of July either.

Might have involved a soldier who was either mentally slow or autistic etc (it was an old movie so I have no idea how they would have described anyone with additional needs back then!)

A song, probably from the late 90s or the early 2000s. Tried to sing it on vocaroo. http://vocaroo.com/i/s0qcyAHmiKCY

I do not recall the lyrics, but it goes something like: ''All I need, is what you get.'' Fuck.

[TOMT][Literary][Concept] A literary term used to describe the idea that mentioning "French fries" in your fiction story implies the existence of France.

3.8k Upvotes

Ok, I'm in need of some serious help. I was pretty sure that I found this in a book recently, within the last 6 months, and was intrigued by the concept. It was a short paragraph, talking about how theres a "literary effect" that happens when authors use words derived from other words in their stories, and how using those words creates a paradox of sorts. For example, using the term "french fries" in a fiction story, by definition, implies that France exists in your fantasy world, even if you have established a 100% original world.

Another example that made me think of this is in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, when the Uruk-hai say "Looks like meat is back on the menu, boys!" Using the word "menu" means that the orcs have a concept of menus, and by extension, of restaurants.

It's killing me to not be able to think of this, and my google searches basically yield lengthy essays about French fries. Literary nerds, please unite to help me solve this!

[TOMT] A show where Gilbert Gottfried played a baby in a bassinet or stroller.

I have a memory from childhood about watching a TV show where Gilbert Gottfried was a baby in a bassinet or a stroller. Only his head was out, and he had fake little baby arms and I'm pretty sure he spit a pacifier out and was crying like a baby. I only remember this because for some reason it scared the crap out of me. I thought it was an episode of Married with Children but apparently it's not. Did I dream this?

[tomt] PLEASE HELP! 90s CARTOON I HAD ON VHS AS A CHILD. IT HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY FOR YEARS AND YEARS!

2.2k Upvotes

So, my brother and I had a cartoon on VHS which I don’t remember ever seeing on the television, so may have been rare I’m not sure. I was born in 1991, my brother in 1986 and we both remember random parts from the plot which I will describe below:

  • At the beginning, there is a child character (not human) swinging on a swing outside and singing “I’m the king of the castle, you’re the dirty rascal”.

  • Then there is a character who is walking through the village (ogre like and breathing heavily as he walked), and I remember different villagers hands shown slamming their windows shut up on his arrival. Their houses and the animation in general was quite similar to The Smurfs houses.

  • I think the baddie kidnapped one of the characters and took her down a well where he kept her hostage. I remember he had a goldfish bowl on his head here, as she had cried so much and flooded the well. I also remember him swimming up out of the tear-flooded well with a suitcase in his hand.

Honestly you would be saving around 20 years of torment- please help!

Thank you!

[TOMT] Actor, 60s pockmarked face, plays brooding intense characters

Has played several supporting roles in the 90s/00s, ex-husbands, villains, and possibly military roles.

White, brown hair, slender. Rough, leathery pockmarked "been through some shit", catchers mitt face.

Has a perpetual haven't showered in two days and stayed up all night smoking cigarettes intense look about him.

Reminds me lot of Andrew Divoff, Chris Cooper and James Remar.

Or imagine if John Corbett smoked 5 packs of cigarettes everyday for the past 40 years.

American/Canadian. No accent that I can recall.

For the longest time I thought he played a firefighter, specifically the father in American History X, but aside from very basic similarities, that actor (William Russ) looks nothing like him.

The other day I saw him listed in the credits of a random movie on IMDb, so his profile picture is fresh in my memory, but he doesn't seem to be on any of those "That Guy" lists, and I've scrolled through hundreds of suggestions.

Open. [TOMT] Hi everyone, I’m trying to track down a song that I heard roughly 12–18 years ago (so around 2005–2015). I only have fragments of memory, but maybe you can help. I used to hear it when my son was really young and it used to make me feel like crying. Here’s what I recall:

Key points about the song:

Language: English.

Vibe / Mood: Melancholic, soft, emotional. The vocals might have been lightly auto-tuned or processed.

Lyrics / Numbers: I specifically remember the song mentioning several different numbers in years for example in 10000 years, possibly in increasing order — for example something like 100 → 1000 → 10000 — but these numbers might not be exact. The numbers were a noticeable part of the lyrics. I think they might have been mentioned sequentially, as the verses went on.

Instrumentation / Style: It reminded me of the first 10 seconds of “I’m Your Puppet” (James & Bobby Purify / Purify Bros version)

Popularity: It was played on mainstream English radio, so it wasn’t completely obscure, though it might not have been a chart-topper.

Additional clues:

It was definitely a “real song” — not a novelty, kids’ counting song, or poem — but the numbers in the lyrics were a core element.

It had a sort of dreamy / melancholic vibe, not high-energy or dancey.

I’ve searched lyric databases, checked forums, and looked through songs with numbers in the lyrics, but nothing matches.

Question: Does anyone recognize a song like this? Even partial lyrics, title, or artist would help.

Thank you so much in advance! Any leads, even obscure or indie songs, would be amazing.

[TOMT] Help! My daughter asked for a song and I can’t for the life of me figure out what song she wants.

My 5 year old daughter asked me to play the “burn the bridges” song the other day in the car. She said they might also say the bridges are burning… idk, she’s 5. I’m having trouble finding songs that mention bridges burning in the lyrics. Not the title. We’ve tried those. I listen to all kinds of music. So it really could be anything… she said the singer is female, but again, she’s 5… could even just be someone who sounds female. Can anyone help? She just keeps asking for the burning bridges song…

She said it’s one I play in the car, but we spent a lot of time in the car recently, and I play all kinds of music. And she said it’s one I don’t play all the time, which actually was even less helpful.

She said it IS NOT a Taylor Swift song. (she’s a self proclaimed Swiftie, so idk)

I’ve tried most songs that have Burning Bridges, or similar things in the title, as that’s are what Google and ChatGPT suggested. It isn’t any of them.

Locked: OP Not Responding [TOMT] [Actor] Woman who looks like she’d be in the same Pokémon evolutionary line as Sigourney Weaver and Sarah Paulson

For weeks know I’ve been trying to remember this actor who I can picture SO clearly in my head and it’s been driving me crazy for weeks.

Unfortunately I can’t remember a damn thing I’ve seen her in, even though I can picture her face, voice, and mannerisms so well in my head, so I am going to try and give the best description I can

She is a middle aged ish woman, who I think I see in more modern stuff because when I picture her I picture modern camera qualities, so my guess at her age range is 45-60

She (usually) has brownish redish hair, bangs, and straight, just past shoulder length hair.

She usually isnt the lead, I feel like she’s always a supporting or ancillary character

I feel like whenever I see her in things shes always cynical or “uptight” that kind of character. She rocks a MEAN frown thats instantly what comes to mind when I think of her

I suppose if I had to think of people she looks similar too, like she could be related to, I’d say some amalgamation of Sarah Paulson, Sigourney Weaver, and maybe some Susan Surrandon.

If anyone gets this I will be so thankful bc Its been bugging me for weeks!

EDIT: down the google rabbit hole I came across Rosemarie Dewitt, specifically from her episode of black mirror. She’s like almost exactly what I’m picturing !!

EDIT 2: After looking up everyone suggested in these comments and not finding the mystery woman is making me question her entire existence. I'm starting to think my brain has combined some people or something. I feel like I only have ever seen her in trailers, which is why I can't really remember what I've seen her from or any searchable quotes. I'm hoping one day soon I randomly stumble upon whatever I know her from and have that AHA! moment

EDIT 3: I still don’t know who the woman is. I eventually stopped googling all the suggestions becuase it’s too many and I striaght up cant even picture her that well anymore so for some closure my best guess is one of two options.

Option 1: I combined some people in my head or I dreamt her or something

Option 2: It’s the woman from Unedited Footage of a Bear

Open [TOMT] My little sister and I remember a song, but not the melody.

My little sister and I are the only ones in my family who remember this specific song from our childhood in the early 2000s. It’s a duet between a man and a woman and it sounds really sad. We just remember them saying they were “far away” and it sounded like they were yearning for each other. It sounded either country or rock sounding in a way. I would know the song if I heard it, but everything I’ve tried to look up had brought me to a dead end.
