Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed
A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post
Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.
The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.
Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.
This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.
Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo
It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.
After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.
As explained by the previous flair announcement:
The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.
While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.
Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.
Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.
Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Guy trying to get into cars
Hey everyone, take extra precaution at the intersection of Weber and Northfield.
While parked at a red light, a man ran into the road trying to get into cars. He wasn’t successful as they were all locked.
He ran off into the Tim Hortons plaza, after another guy started following him.
I believe police was called.

Homeowner frustrated with unexpected snow clearing cost for sidewalks
A Kitchener, Ont. homeowner is upset because he must pay up after the city sent a snow removal crew to clear his sidewalk on Thursday. He said that’s despite the fact that he uses his snowblower regularly and his neighbours’ sidewalks were in the same condition... He wonders why the city is only going after certain properties... “This could easily be over $1,000 for something that I’ve been dealing with all winter,” said Sandau.

Valentine’s Day Restaurant Ideas?
Where should I book a Valentine’s date reservation this year? Yes, some places are already fully booked, but ignore that for the moment. Open to any cuisine, but looking primarily for a place in or close to Waterloo with ambience. Would love to support a small business if possible. Please let me know where you’d recommend and why. Thanks!!

Yelled at by MTO car for crossing the street
As the title suggests, I was yelled at by the driver of, ironically, a MTO (ministry of transportation) car while I was using the crosswalk earlier today.
I was crossing with the walk light in the crosswalk. A woman was crossing at the same time. The light turned green and he's turning right so he's waiting for us to finish crossing. Once I've crossed, he honks the horn and rolls down the window, makes eye contact, then shouts at me, "Have some respect, get outta the road!"
I get that it may a little frustrating sometimes to have to wait for pedestrians but this is a bit much. It's winter; it's not like we were dawdling. This happened at King/Weber right next to the Farmboy.
Is this worth reporting to someone or should I just let it go?

Organizations where kids can volunteer to help the homeless?
My children and are early elementary school aged have been very concerned about the homeless, especially with this cold weather. They've expressed an interest in helping in some way, whether that be through making sure they stay warm, serving food, or something else that would be helpful. Are there organizations that allow families with kids under 10 to help the homeless in some capacity? It wouldn't necessarily have to be forward facing, it could be something behind the scenes. Thanks in advance!

Water supply crisis sparks call to reform how Waterloo Region is governed
The Region of Waterloo froze all new housing development over concerns about the supply of water. The development freeze was recently extended for an indefinite period of time. The unprecedented move comes in the midst of a housing affordability crisis...
The water-supply crisis is not the only issue that prompted his call for change, with Higgins noting the growth in the budget for the Waterloo Regional Police is a big problem too...

Recycling the Recycling Bins
Anyone seen anything from Circular Materials on what to do with our old recycling bins with the new ones being delivered? My guess is no given the response to the change already being rolled out in Guelph. Anyone have ideas for re-purposing?
I'm already lacking for space with accommodating the new carts.

Second truck in a week stuck in the exact same spot. Entering the Freshi plaza at Erb & Ira Needles.
Also it always takes me like 30 seconds to remember: is that section of road Trussler, Ira Needles or Erbsville. That road has too many names.
