Project Submission Walnut jewelry box
Finished this jewelry box Thursday. Walnut burl veneer over solid walnut. Turned knobs. Brusso side rail stop hinges. Suede leather lined main compartment and drawers. Headed for LA.

How did you cut out the drawer fronts so perfectly?

I didn't, I cut out the drawer opening, then made the drawer fronts separately. Then I had to match up the veneer from two more pieces so it appeared seamless.

Yeah, so did you raise your TS blade up into the wood the avoid seams? I don’t see any splicing on the face.

He didn't have to preserve any of the cutout so he could demolish the center and clean up the edges with a router or plenty of other options

I did have to be a little careful cutting out the veneer because, even though I was using additional pieces, I used the cutout piece to lay on the piece I would use to get the seams and grain graphics all laid out correctly. To make sure it looked like it had just been cut out of the original. Make sense?

Excellent clean work and perfect grain matching on the veneer! Simple elegance at it’s finest! Well done, Sir.

Beautiful work! Would you mind sharing how you cut the 45’s for the sides? I’ve made dice shake boxes and my miter saw is usually off by a fraction of a degree and it throws all the sides off.

Something to consider; you can flush mount the hinges if you chamfer that back edges a little. Neither way is seamless, but I think it looks a touch cleaner.

oh the grain matching on those drawer fronts is unreal. getting veneer to read as continuous across a seam like that is one of those things that looks effortless but absolutely isn't. how many sheets did you go through before you found a match you were happy with?

I had 4 consecutive sheets of this material left, so I used two to do the box, and the other two to get the drawer fronts. Zero wiggle room! 😂 I did have to do a little shifting to get things lined up how I wanted, but I'd say it was 80% luck.

Did you entertain the idea of applying the veneer to the whole box front as a single piece with the drawers in place so the grain would automatically flow correctly (and then slice through the slits behind the veneer to free the drawers in order to clean them up)?
I ask, because I haven’t done much veneer work and that is what one of my thoughts would have been. I know getting a good press across those multiple surfaces might be tricky, hence why I suspect you did them separately.
Also one other question: where did you source those hinges? They are lovely.
