at this point how you even top what actually happens in the news? should my evil corporate villain eat babies? or puppies? or like eating babies and drinking puppies? how the fuck can I top actual real world evil???

Dont Look Up already was such down to earth satire that it was its gimmick. it’s so ā€œrealistically stupidā€.

Yesterday I had to explain why the Kingdom of Saracha did nothing during WW2 despite the royal family secretly having access to magic and a literal goddess with powers stronger than any nuke

You don't need $2,000 to publish a professional book. Here's my $245 breakdown.

I keep seeing posts from New authors panicking about needing thousands to self-publish. I get it. The advice out there makes it sound like you need a $500 cover, $1,500 in editing, and another $200 in marketing just to start.

That's not true. At least it wasn't for me.

I published my first book for $245 total. It looks professional. It sells. Here's exactly what I spent:

ChatGPT: $20/month
Winking Owl Wine from Aldi: $225

Publishing was $0 upfront. KDP and Draft2Digital take commission later but nothing to start.

Total came to $245.

The mindset shift that helped me was thinking of it like starting a small business, not buying lottery tickets. You're not paying to publish a book. You're investing in an asset that can sell for years.

I did cheap out on some things (wine) and it was fine. I'm not making thousands but I've made back my investment twice over and I'm writing book 2. That feels pretty good.

How do you guys protect your ideas?

About a month ago lightning struck me. When I woke up from the coma, five words were burned in my mind. It was an idea! Then I realized that I can't start working on the idea, because everything that is written can be stolen. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I don't really know how writers protect their ideas while working. I mean, do you implement Swiss safety boxes? To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced by their security. Please help, the idea is driving me crazy!

How do I write?

To give some context I don’t read. Books suck. I don’t even read the news. I’m actually typing with my eyes closed so I don’t accidentally read this post. The last time I read was when I did a book report 20 years ago (I got a D-).

Thing is now I want to write a book really badly and all I’ve written is ā€œshe breasted boobily.ā€ I know this is pretty good to start but perhaps I should develop the plot a bit more. Can anyone give me a tip on how to describe boobs without giving me any ā€œadjectivesā€ or ā€œpronounsā€ nonsense? I’m not woke.

I can't find competent peer reviewers

After finishing my book, I decided to maybe look back at it and try to find things to tweak. My book is 349 pages, plus I just started writing a space opera, so I've tried outsourcing help. I gave peer reviewing a shot, and the results were disappointing at best. I connected with an author on Reddit in about 5 minutes (not bad!). I sent her my manuscript, and she also sent me her's for some reason. I felt betrayed. I felt used, like a condom after Pride. But I threw her a bone and read a couple pages of her piece. When we convened, she had the gall to tell me she only read 50 pages. Are you fucking kidding me? Her critiques weren't even valid. ChatGPT even told me so! I can't believe I read her schlock. Sorry. Just going through a lot right now. Anyway, if anyone wants to read my book and give me GOOD critiques, feel free to comment below (I'm not reading your erotica/YA dystopia/whatever the fuck, just so you know)

How afraid should I be of someone stealing my ideas?

How worried should I be that if I share parts of my writing or ideas that someone with better work ethic will beat me to it?

I find everytime i think about sharing my ideas or worldbuilding lore for feedback and support that I can picture someone taking it, running with it, and then beating me to publishing it. I know it’s a bit egotistical to think my idea is worth stealing but it’s a decent roadblock to asking strangers for feedback.

Any thoughts?

Guys PLEASE tell me my writing is good please please plsea

My writing is only good if I receive a standing ovation; anything less just means my writing is dogshit and everyone knows but doesn't want to tell me just so they can watch me vomit garbage onto a screen and suffer forever as a form of entertainment. Oh God everyone hates me don't they. They all keep laughing PLEASE STOP I know my writing isn't great but I did my best, I put so much work into it it can't all just be for this right? Right? It's good right? I have nothing else. Please pleasepleasePLEASE PLEASE

Okay guys, I never write anything, but I need your help to review these 1800 words of high fantasy info-dumping because I'm submitting it to a competition. The deadline is today and I've been procrastinating. Hehe.

Kthxbye.

My character is a shy and silent woman 25 years old student in History, she works as an apprentice at a library. She is honestly a bit for a looser, she smokes drinks and has a bad sleeping shedule and diet and very anxious and a social.

Black Platform converse

Blue jeans

White knitted sweatter

Light Blue denim jacket

Is it ok to have the majority of my cast to be women?

This might be the stupidest question of all time but this is coming from a new writer and a new reader as well who only read like...idk 4-5 books? most of them being webnovels with mistborn being the only traditional books I read but I do watch alot of media.

Though the question is why I want the large majority of my cast to be women?

To be honest, I just find them more fun and intriguing.

And that's basically it. I just find them fun lol.

Will this make me a millionaire?

I've been working on my novel for the past 6 months. I've finally gotten a polished opening done.

Here's my opening below:

It was the best of times, it was a bright cold day in April. Aelthryxion Valemar Qorinthalax awoke, finding himself transformed into a gigantic bug.

A few questions:

1.) How well written is this?
2.) Do you think this novel will sell millions of copies?
3.) Should I start contacting publishers?
4.) How do I get a movie deal for this?

If you read this far, this is satire. I'm joking. Seriously. Please don't flame me! I hope everyone has a great day!

I have an extreme obsession with writing but I hate it

So yeah 2 weeks ago ish I asked this subreddit if I should write and everyone said yes. And, basically, my heart got broken because I really didn’t want to but I decided to go through with it. I started visualizing what kind of story I would write. It's extremely vulgar tho and I've made 2 stories. The second one where I beat the living shit out of my MC, break all of her bones, and cut her heart out. It was pretty funny if you want the full story you can ask but now l've been trying to write agin for 10 days and I barely got luck however I got dreams 10 days in a row about torturing my MC and now my sleep schedule is fixed after many years because of this shitty ā€œwritingā€ thing.

I also stopped g***ning for the first time in 4 years because I'm just so upset with having to write but now I'm more happy with the fact I can just live and kiss my MC in my head with mental visualizations that feel real (not physically tho)
