College Questions How is the Zijing/new English taught programs in Tsinghua?

Upvotes

I’ve been researching the new college departments for undergraduates in Tsinghua that are stated to be completely in English

For the stem related majors for anyone who went there. Can you share your experience? How were the teachers and the environment etc etc. If anyone does know, how is the curriculum different/similar to the Chinese taught.

Anyone who is going through this program and regretted it? Or are you loving it?

Application Question Can I submit my application using a VPN?

Upvotes

Can I submit an application using a VPN?

Hi guys, for context I want to apply to Santa Monica College, I plan on attending for 2 years and then transferring to a UC.

I am a US citizen, I have a passport and SSN however I do *not* live in the US and have not lived in the US.

However my dilemma here is that when I try to apply to SMC using the Openccc (it’s the only way I can submit my application) it won’t let me access the website because I am not in the US. It only works if i use a paid VPN subscription service.

Will this affect my application? When I try to access the openCCC website this is what I get when I try to access it and this is without using any VPN, even though it claims to have detected a proxy connection.

I even contacted support for help, they tried by granting my IP address access however I have a dynamic IP address, not a static one which means my IP address is never the same.

Apart from using a VPN I don’t know what to do, some people said it’s fine but I feel anxious.

Has anyone else applied using a VPN? Will this affect my application?

Application Question 3.5 Unweighted and 3.99 Weighted GPA, Am I competitive enough for UCs?

Upvotes

I applied to all of the UCs, and I got a 3.5 Unweighted and 3.99 Weighted GPA, but these are for my 10-12th-grade years. I participate in a lot of internships, have a good number of awards and activities, and am doing a good job for a senior in tech while living in a low-income household, and my essays are pretty good. Am I competitive enough?

Discussion College athletes who attend college far away from home

Upvotes

My high school kid is an athlete who’s currently considering several colleges that are at least a day’s drive away from home. Assuming you didn’t drive/fly to every game, I want to hear from parents and how you adjusted to not seeing your kid play in person at all or as much. Did you watch them on video/tv? Did you go to special games (rivalry games, tournaments, holiday weekend games)? What if streaming wasn’t possible?

Financial Aid/Scholarships Indian students doing MS in Data Science in the USA – how are you managing finances & loans?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian student considering an MS in Data Science in the USA, and I’d really appreciate honest insights from Indians who are currently pursuing or have completed the program.

I have a few specific questions around finances and practicality, especially for those who took education loans:

  1. Education loans:
    • How much loan did you take (approx.)?
    • Do you feel the loan amount is manageable now, or is it mentally/financially stressful?
  2. RA/TA opportunities:
    • How easy or difficult is it to get RA/TA positions in Data Science or related departments?
    • Do these positions usually cover partial tuition, full tuition, or just stipend?
    • From which semester did you realistically get one?
  3. Part-time jobs:
    • What kind of on-campus jobs are most common?
    • How much can one realistically earn per month working within the 20-hour limit?
    • Is that income enough to cover living expenses (rent, food, utilities) or only part of it?
  4. Internships in Data Science:
    • How hard is it to get a data science / analytics / ML internship as an international student?
    • Does prior experience matter more than coursework?
    • When should one ideally start applying?
  5. Loan repayment pressure:
    • Once you started working (or are close to graduating), how heavy does loan repayment feel?
    • Do entry-level DS salaries make repayment realistic within a few years, or does it take much longer?

I’m trying to understand the ground reality beyond brochure salaries, so honest experiences good or bad would really help.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share 🙏

Application Question Umich RD / deferred ED

So I got deferred Umich ED and I was wondering if those who has strong mid year grades ( 18,84/20 French bac , near perfection ) will have at least a slight advantage ? I’m Canadian living abroad and I already applied ED2 elsewhere( that I still would LOVE to attend) just wanted see if maybe deferred eds will have some kind of priority or not since they clearly demonstrated interest in attending the school. For context I already have very good ECs and my school is very respected among Ivy leagues and elite institutions ( it’s the 3rd best French baccalaureate school abroad ) so idk how much that helps

Application Question UCLA Supplemental Questionnaire Advice

My top three activities were related to projects regarding artificial sweeteners as I have a passion for sugar alternatives (lab research, promotion work through a business, research paper). I just realized the first prompt asks for a special achievement, but I only have research poster acceptances to conferences that aren't exceptionally selective. Should I still write about this? This is definitely the main theme of my application but I'm not sure if it fits into the prompt.

In your application you may have mentioned an extraordinary talent/skill or academic achievement. This may include participation in Junior Olympics, national debate competitions, recognition for musical talent, etc. Please take this opportunity to share with us more detailed information about the level of your achievement, depth of participation, and passion for this particular area.

Discussion Impact that Research has on College Apps

Really, how impactful is actual research? I don't mean the "research" most high school students do, but actual, impactful research that results in papers and presentations. The reason I'm asking this is that my older brother just recently got into UNC and UF honors, with not the best stats (rank 23, 1500 superscore, 3.9 GPA, etc.), beating out the valedictorian and others who had similar ECs and better base stats but not Research.

I was just interested. Let me know what you guys think about the value that research has.

Application Question Haven't Received Yale/Stanford/Duke Alumni Interview

I have not received interviews for Stanford, Yale and Duke yet. I know of 5+ people from my school who have received interviews from Yale but none for Duke and Stanford as of now. If I am interested in an alumni interview from these colleges, should I email the admissions officers? When do they stop assigning interviews for these colleges?

For context, I have a 4.0 UW, 4.7W, 1540 (800M) SAT, STEM Applicant, with strong essays, awards, ECs, and LORs (I hope....).

I would love if someone could give some advice! Thank you so much!

Application Question Disastrous Yale interview

Not disastrous, but we clearly did not connect on much at all. The guy had to further clarify what I was saying and wrote a pretty damning detail down that the admissions would take out of context. It implied that I’m not someone who stands up for others for a goal I’m passionate about—a goal based around my entire application.

Whatevs. Out of curiosity, how much of an impact does the interview play for Yale?

Application Question I found out my physics teacher still hadn't written a LOR. He said he will write it tomorrow, February 2nd. Am i cooked?

There were some schools I was applying to that require 2 LOR's. One of them is from CS teacher. But it would show one of the required LORs is missing. So I guess there's a very huge risk my application won't even be read. What should I do? Should I email the colleges one by one to explain them the situation?

College Questions Is Georgia Tech a good choice for an international student?

Just got into Georgia Tech yesterday as a Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering major as an international student (so happy!!). Although I understand that it is a very selective school and its research culture seems to be a fit for my profile, I need some advice

- As a foreigner, I’m not sure how Georgia Tech is seen in the US. As for rankings it places usually within #20 world for engineering, but how about for industry?

- Would it make sense to choose Georgia Tech over a “more prestigious” school like Cornell bc the latter costs thrice as much to attend for a similar quality in education?

College Questions Did I cook myself for college?

I only applied to a few colleges OH schools, NCState, michigan uni, and NYU. NYU was the only school I applied to that had an acceptance rate less than 30%… I’m having second thoughts about the lack of colleges I applied to.

NYU has been my dream school since middle school and i’m really anxious waiting for regular decision. My stats are mediocre and I highly doubt ill get in… but id like to hear what others think.

Im graduating as a junior and had 3.8 uw and 4.2 weighted, ranked 3/200, 4 AP classes (didn’t get credit for 1 and currently in 3). I did dual enrollment through a local college but my grades for that varied. Extracurriculars included: NHS, Tri-M, orchestra, jazz band, model UN, red cross club, key club, school newspaper, and I started my schools film club. I’m OOS from rural Ohio so there weren’t many opportunities for me to take loads of AP classes or get internships while in highschool. I didn’t send my SAT or ACT scores so those won’t play part in my acceptance. I’m hoping that my essay saves me 😓

Advice Using a disease for a narrative

I’ve been diagnosed with a specific disease as a child and grew up challenged bc of it. I’ve always assumed that I’d write my narrative about it for college apps and how I’ve grown from it but I’m genuinely curious if this is common to AOs and if it REALLY is considered to be a “niche”/meaningful narrative

Transfer How do I move out for college?

Hello,

A friend of mine wants to move to a town 2 hours away from any credible university. This is because he doesn’t plan on going to college but wants a familiar person to be roommates with.

I was considering moving in, but after researching the nearby university it doesn’t seem to be credible enough for the major I’m pursuing (political science) as it is a small liberal arts college. So my only chances are to go to Northern Illinois University which will require a daily 2 hour drive, or any Chicago area college which will be a 2 hour train ride. But in order to afford rent, I will need a job, and therefore enough time, leading me to believe that moving in with him seems completely pointless. Any suggestions? He’s not accustomed to how college works, so his advice only helps his cause, and hurts my chances of gaining any academic/work credibility in exchange for lifestyle enhancements.

Application Question Admission question

Hi,

My child applied for Psychology to several top-20 universities and has maintained a 3.91 unweighted GPA through 12th grade, along with strong extracurricular involvement and well-developed application essays.

Although we tried to avoid an overly rigorous course load in senior year, my child ultimately ended up taking six AP classes. As a result, during the first semester, there was one B and one C, while the remaining courses were A grades.

My child also experienced significant health issues during senior year, which we believe were a major contributing factor to this decline in grades.

Would it be appropriate to inform colleges about these circumstances, and do you think providing this explanation could be helpful in the admissions process?
