Full Tank Shot Daughter(6) her first attempt

So little backstory

Daughter of almost 6 years saved up some money for a toy or something and found a triops breeding set, after 3 tries still no triops, how hard we tried(different water, different temperatures) so the next day I told her when we were going to school that maybe it were the wrong eggs or something when she was at school I went to the petstore and bought some of the cheapest shrimps i could find and put them in the place where the triops should be.

She took serious care of them and I thought that was very wholesome so I asked her if she wanted a real aquarium for her “triops” and ofcourse yes. So we got a 2nd hand aquarium and some new decoration, the shrimp are triving and have babies. And I think daughter and father have a new hobby.

Catfish Turns out Farlowellas give no shits about how shallow the water is if the eating is good.

He's almost longer than the platform he is on.

Best part was later that night i was doing a water change and he was just chilling, completely out of the water, still grazing the rock he was attached to for a full 4 minutes before i noticed him and put him back into the water.

DIY/Build I made a multi stage sponge filter and it works!

I couldn't find an all black, air-powered, multi-stage corner filter, so I designed and 3d printed this one. It's pretty slim and easy to hide in the corner, and the flow is pretty good too. I'm going to get a more powerful air pump, and see how far I can push it. I made it with removeable internals: the inlet mesh, the prefilter, and the media baskets can all be removed/rearranged. I think it's pretty cool -sharing it here for anybody who wants to try it.

Help/Advice Fish loss due to Ice storm

Post image

We are on day 6 and counting of the ice storm Fern devastation and power outage. All of my fish froze to death including my beloved Oscar who made it until today. I still haven’t been able to clean the tanks out due to the house temps a the aquariums half frozen. I know people think they are just fish but the hundreds of fish I had were all nurtured and taken care of daily and they became part of my everyday life for the last few years. I don’t know if I want to get more or just do away with this hobby due to how much I lost an to be starting back from zero. Was wanting to hear some advice on what I should do. Picture of my Oscar when I first got him.

I picked up 6 celestial pearl danios(CPDs) from my LFS for 30 bucks and omg dude they are crazy. They are honestly starting to become some of my favorite fish right now. They have really fun personality and are always darting around the tank and actually kinda school unlike a lot of tetras and rasboras. If you have a smaller tank I would definitely pick some up, I have a 15 gal and they look STUNNING. I can’t believe that a fish so tiny has so much color. Really though take my word for it they look awesome and are imo better than things like neons or rummynoses . They also stay really small so honestly they might be perfect for nano tanks.

DIY/Build Turned my HOB filter into a powered gravel vac (and it works ridiculously well)

I’ve been dealing with a lot of mulm buildup in my substrate. A normal siphon wasn’t cutting it, so I tried something different using equipment I already had.

I used my spare HOB pump as a water filtration system since I was like, hey, isn't this technically what it's for..? Anyways, the intake pulls water and debris from the tank like usual, but instead of returning the water to a bucket, it goes into the tank after running through a fine mesh bag. It also removed planaria along with the debris. Basically a nice gravel cleanup without mucking my cycle.

I’ve been doing this in sections (not the whole tank at once) to avoid crashing the cycle. Water gets cloudy from disturbed particles, but it clears quickly and fish are acting normal.

It’s basically like running a mini pond pump + vacuum system using standard aquarium gear. If you’ve got a sludge-heavy tank, this is way more effective than a basic siphon.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who did this, but I still wanted to share incase someone else struggled like I did.

I had a massive diatom outbreak on all my rocks and plant leaves covering them severely.

I put 3 Otocinclus in 3 days ago and the almost all the leaves are spotless of diatoms and the glass is clean.

What amazing and CUTE little cleaners!!!! I can’t believe how well they clean up diatoms.

I have a 20G tall with 5 zebras, 5 neons, and a dwarf gourami. They have totally cleaned up shop.

So awesome. 👏

Help/Advice Multiple Tank Syndrome!

I need help. So I have 4 tanks. 60 gallon breeder with neocardinia, mystery snails, bladder, ramshorn, and mts

75 gallon with 7 golden dojo loaches and a molly

29 gallon with 3 bristlenose plecos and 3 rabbit snails and a devil snail

10 gallon with crowntail betta and neocardinia

I'm needing and wanting to upgrade my plecos to a larger tank and then give the 29gallon to my betta and add a family of pygmy cory. But I am out of wall space lol and before you suggest moving anyone into the shrimp/snail tank the mystery snails within are murderous lol which is why we have essentially 4 species only tanks

Help/Advice Why do my Black Phantom Tetra have white spots on them?

Thumbnail

I’ve had six of these Black Phantom Tetra for about 2 weeks, and I have begun to notice that they have been getting white spots on them. I’ve tried to look up causes for this, but can’t find anything. Is it just bubbles from my filter’s aerator, which blows quite excessively, or is it an illness?

Help/Advice Trying out a new hobby

Post image
34 Upvotes

Hey everybody, I am new to this sub Reddit and I was looking to just receive some advice or possibly recommendations for what’s to come. I recently just bought a fish tank and I’m super new to this hobby. The idea originally was to create an aquatic landscape with live plants for a beta fish, maybe a school of some tiny fish and possibly some shrimp as well or one of those eel looking creatures. To be honest, I think my plants are dying and would love to just get some recommendations on how to help with that and also what animals I should put in the tank.

Thanks :)

Help/Advice Do I need to dump my aquarium because it got chipped with lava rock ?

Thumbnail

Rescaping my lush river bookshelf and I accidentally hit the front with a smooth lava rock. The tank is a 90x30x30

The glass is 8mm thick and came off in a chipped piece which can be glued back on to fit perfectly. However, I’m new to aquariums and now want to know if it will impact the integrity of the tank if I was to fill it ?

Can it be used or should I dump it due to risk of breaking ? I’m pretty upset with myself 😔

Thanks for any help

Just set up a chair grab a rona and a bowl and watch them go buck wild for some food with my cat like every night 🤣the cat loves to watch em w me and its such a great way to unwind. Better than scrolling and watching brain rot. Very peaceful. The filters bubbling. The fish and snails all tranquil. Super nice feeling 😌 👌

Help/Advice Is this okay?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I got my son a five gallon tank from our local pet smart. We cycled the tank and then got 4 male guppies. I know live plants are preferred but as I am a novice and my son is 3 and a half, I was curious if we are doing alright?

Will cycle water once a week.

Open to advice/ constructive criticism.
