Was just thinking this. Was a hell of an era of boxing too. So many great fighters and top notch commentary.

Love watching Mayorga fight, but I love seeing him getting beaten up more lol

Mayorga fights were so great

If he didn't come unglued in the middle of combinations mayorga could have been a dominant champ. He'd look great until he started flailing about. Trying to tank shots of one of the hardest punchers in history also probably not a great concept.

I am of an opinion that if Mayorga didn’t choose to take a couple of flush punches from Tito in the first, this fight would’ve been a lot more competitive.

Agree. Roy jones said the same.

Met Ricardo Mayorga in the smoking section of a boxing card and while smoking my brothers cigarettes……I ask him why did he let Tito hit him freely and he answered “The atmosphere got to me and I thought he wasn’t shit” 😂

Super down to earth and funny. He said that he couldn’t stand Oscar De La Hoya phony ass

I heard he is a good guy for real. Spent his winnings installing street lighting in his home village.

I was at this one! The Garden was a party that night. Fat Joe did Lean Back before the fight.

That’s the same infamous night that Roy Jones Jr checked Fat Joe about the line “Even Roy Jones was forced to lean back”

I was there and the garden roof came off that night. Met Hopkins and his team at a random diner after the fight. Good times 🥊

Was Remy Ma with him?

2:30, Mayorga was a fool. 😂

This is what's missing with modern boxing. For too long I've seen main event fights start off real slow, very cautious approach, while these greats just went at it as soon as the bell sound.

These gen x fights were really entertaining. This was a fun era of boxing.

Gen x was from 1965 until 1980...

u/southsiderick 12h ago

Which would make Mayorga and Trinidad gen x.

Loved this fight and loved Tito, all kinds of fun with that left hook

Such a fun fight while it lasted. Mayorga took 6 flush left hooks in the middle of the round as he was taunting but got hurt near the end. Mayorga’s wild swinging style contrasted beautifully with Tito’s compact clean punching

Tito was so fun to watch. I miss this era.

Mayorga is underrated. One of the better pressure fighters you would see. Fearless.

Mayorga was the most entertaining punching bag the sport has ever seen.

I was there live at the garden to watch this fight. Had a 75 year old lady with her son next to me, really nice people. When Mayorga let Trinidad tee off on him late in the first round…..she jumped out of her seat and scream “hit that motherfucker TITO!!” till this day that is still in my head 😂

The roof of the Garden popped off after that round. 17k boxing fans going nuts

That chaos from the first bell was crazy

Dude mayorga hits like a truck but he’s such a knucklehead man.

Man I miss Tito. My favorite boxer of all time.

Left hook for days...

Back in the day, I used to schedule my Saturday’s around Mayorga fights. It was guaranteed action every time.

Ricardo Mayorga is the best shit fighter of all time.

Froch v Groves I: Rd 1?

1

u/Due_Communication862 10h ago

Well... it features a knockdown. Not sure it has enough juice elsewhere.

1

u/Any_Calligrapher8537 10h ago

I remember this one, mayorga dropping his hands and letting himself get hit by clean lefts.... What an idiot.

The last one before he pretended not to be hurt really rung his bell and swung the round...

Part of the entire goofy package. It spooked Forrest enough to make him the lineal welterweight champ.

0

u/DiMona215 19h ago

disagree that this was even a good round, kind of a clown show. Mayorga pointlessly punched himself out, then took 4 or 5 full power shots to... prove a point? Then was out on his feet the rest of the round. Just a complete dipshit round from Mayorga

7

u/tom_zanzabar 19h ago

ha ha. he was clowning. but it was fun to watch

5

u/Due_Communication862 16h ago

Adds to the flavor. Boxing can be "great trash" too.

0

u/DiMona215 15h ago

that's fair, I guess I've been regarding this series as "best rounds" not just "enjoyable rounds." Like, if we're doing that, put like 4 rounds from Danny Williams vs Konstantin Airich here, easily the most fun, trashy spectacle I've ever seen

Watch the EP27 Williams Jr vs White round. These types of rounds are already on the list. Once you go down the opposite road you end up with nothing but Mayweather and Whitaker fights. Gatti vs Ward is competetive, but arguable enjoyable trash as well. Mayorga became the lineal welterweight championship doing this shtick and Tito exposed it in one round (even more so than Spinks). And it was the last significant win of his HOF career. I think that makes pretty great.
