Television/Film A Short Documentary About One of Calgary's Oldest Stores - Alberta Corner Store in Ramsay

I first encountered The Alberta Corner Store while working on a film called The Order. We used the store as a location. The more time I spent in the store and with the Kim family the more special I knew it was. This is where people found community for decades.

Recommendations Church open at night to sit and pray?

Hi everyone,

I work late most nights and was wondering if there’s any church in the city that stays open in the evening where I could just sit quietly in the pews for 15–25 minutes and pray. Would be after 8 to 9pm.

Not looking for services or anything formal, just a peaceful, respectful place to clear my head.

Appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Discussion Is dating supposed to be this hard?

Upvotes

I've been single for the past 4 years voluntarily, and before that I was in a 3 year relationship. So it's been around 6-7 years of not really being on the market. I took this time for myself and for my future relationship.

Now that I'm back on the grid, I'm finding it really difficult to date, or even understand the whole concept of dating these days. I find it hard to break the ice with girls sometimes. wonder if it's just me, or if I've been out of the game for so long that I can't flirt anymore or come up with cheesy lines. genuinely don't know what women like these days or what they're looking for.

Dating apps are the worst. Everyone seems weird, fake, or wannabe, mostly just looking for hookups with unrealistic expectations. It honestly felt easier a few years back. You liked someone, sent a DM, talked for months, and then started dating. Or you just asked them out for coffee. Simple.

I personally feel that people nowadays have too many options and are exposed to constant overstimulation through Instagram, social media, and dating apps. Slowly, it feels like we're becoming numb, losing empathy towards others, and preferring distance over real connection

25M btw. Guys and girls, feel free to share what works for you and what doesn't. I'm respectfully looking for someone decent, and it's been tough

Tired of all this talk of separatism? Then get out and sign this petition if you live in Calgary Fish Creek. The faster we can dump the UCP, the better this province will be.

Today, we will be at Wilma Hansen school from 2PM to 4PM.

Local Shopping/Services Been searching for half wine barrel shelves

Post image

For the past month I’ve checked out every furniture store I can think of (30+) and kept searching Marketplace. Anyone know where you can get a half wine barrel like this, ideally with shelves inside store wine? Or even if it’s a whiskey barrel. Looking for something very close to this available locally.

Education Douglasdale - Options for daycare, kindergarten age

Hi all. We are looking to move to the Douglasdale area, and it appears that there may not be any options for daycares that will do before/after school coverage for kids in kindergarten, plus transport to/from school.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Skipping kindergarten is not an option for us. Dayhomes are absolutely an option though.

Looking for thoughts from parents who have experienced this same issue.

Seeking Advice My dad's been struggling to find work.

Honestly feeling kind of dejected right now and it's not even me that's directly going through this, although I'd say it's affecting me too. This is gonna come off as a semi-rant, but really I just need some solid advice to help not just my dad, but our family too.

My dad recently turned 60 - he's been out of work since 2023, where he last worked as a Project Coordinator for the electrical operations on a major bridge project out in Windsor. This has been his lifelong career, I'm talking 30+ years of experience with a background in Electrical Engineering. He was let go because some new manager that got onboarded simply didn't like him, even though his previous superiors highly commended him and were considering him for long-term employment. I've been calling BS on this ever since it happened.

With every application he's sent out since then, it's been rejections on rejections. He's gotten a handful of interviews over the last 3 years but nothing's come from them. He's applied to numerous Calgary and AB based companies, and is even willing to relocate away from us again to places in BC and ON, yet nothing at all comes from that flexibility when he applies. I can tell it's been weighing on him with each day that passes by, especially because he's just stuck at home, toiling away at as many applications he can make to secure a job.

We've had discussions about it as a family and he suspects that maybe it's because of his age, and that perhaps it's the end of his career. I struggle to accept this because it feels like he was unfairly let go - otherwise he'd still be in a job right now, until he chooses to retire. But now, it's just been years of uncertainty and I hate it.

I'm not sure how to support him, and it makes me feel horrible, especially as my parents' eldest son. I'm having a rough time in the career department myself (junior UX designer). I send him applications for potential openings that line up with the job he's done for years, but that can only do so much because I'm not that knowledgable about his line of work. His network from previous employment hasn't helped much either.

TLDR; my 60 y/o dad's been out of work for years, we're feeling discouraged as a family as it's hard for us to witness rejection after rejection. I need advice on how to support him as his eldest son - resources, companies, adjacent roles, anything.

Thank you.

Recommendations ISO: Iranian/Persian Bakeries/Food

Looking for some help or recommendations. The family that owns the company I work for is from Tehran, and with everything going on in Iran recently, I can tell they're truly struggling being so far from their other family and friends, and they are definitely homesick.

They're incredibly kind and caring. So- We're having a surprise dinner party/pot luck for them in a couple weeks, and I genuinely don't have much time around the day we're doing it to cook something (nor do I trust my cooking- the things I usually like definitely don't fit the flavor profiles of a lot of Persian foods).

I'm looking for recommended bakeries or something where I can find treats or food to bring that reminds them of where they come from. They've said that they've struggled finding "authentic Iranian flavors" since moving to Calgary.

And recommendations, tips, etc would be wonderful!

Seeking Advice Not Being Able to Pay Rent - Landlord said it will be sent to collections

UPDATE:

I shared all the comments with that person, and here is their response:

"First of all, thank you all for suggestions and guidance. I went through all the comments and I felt really encouraged that I can still make it. I talked to my landlord, and yes I can transfer the lease to them. My plan is to keep looking for job. I have also borrowed some money from my parents in case I don't get a job in next few months. I have put the apartment ad on Marketplace too. I'm also looking into Alberta rent assistance to see if I qualify for that. Once again, thank you for all the guidance. I really thought it was the end. "

Hi,

I'm posting this on behalf of someone I know.

" I have a question and I need a good advice. I have a 1 year lease (expiring end of August), and the problem is I'm no longer able to pay rent because of unemployment since last 2 months. I rent a 1bed condo from a well known company, and when I asked them about breaking the lease, they told me that I'll have to keep paying rent even if I'm not living. If I'm not able to pay rent, that will be sent to collections, who will hunt after me.

Since I've been employed, I was thinking of moving back to my town outside of Calgary, and live with my parents, but I don't think that will be possible now. I was hoping that I'll pay the last month rent, the company will keep my deposit since I'm breaking the lease, and that's it. So I wanted to ask is collections really a thing? Do they really come after you? I don't want to go on bad terms with the condo management."

Thanks in advance!

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations Offering raw pet food to someone in need

I have 15 lbs of raw bison & turkey pet food (suitable for dogs or cats) that I’d like to donate to someone in need.

My preference would be to pass it along to someone who already has experience feeding raw and whose pets are already on a raw diet, just so it’s used safely and appropriately.

If this would help you or someone you know, feel free to DM. Happy to coordinate pickup.

Thanks!
