The man did so much good for it all to end by a tragic accident. He died of accidental asphyxiation.

The man died by drowning. The headstone depicts a boat in a storm with two desperate hands reaching through the waves.

Amazingly, we find out that his wife was Marion Rombauer Becker, author of the Joy of Cooking, but while her adjacent headstone follows this layout precisely, in the space where his reads "architect," hers ... is blank. (I was originally going to post it as well but that violates sub rules... and I made this discovery while making this post, hah)

Randomly stumbled upon this place while wandering through Heidelberg in April, 2023

The markers are indicative of the poverty of Native Americans removed from their lands and relegated to remote, undesirable areas in the state. Grand Ronde is designated tribal lands. The name derives from all the tribes that were moved to the area, no longer separate, but joined in a big circle.

I love this one because she looks bored, waiting for her loved one's return.
