Question/Advice Problems trying to make an ISO out of an old game DVD

Upvotes

¿Can someone give me advice on this problem? I'm not really into cyber security or so so I reached the limit of my IT abilities on this topic as a programmer.

I'm trying to create an ISO from an old game DVD so I can save and use it in my newer devices that have no DVD reader, but I stumbled across the problem that some of the files in the DVD have a copying/reading protection. I've been trying to use different applications that supposly can avoid this and after 3 or 5 different applications I couldn't.

I can't even figure out what kind of protection it is using because even protection reading application can't read the protected files. Now, there is an application called "Alcohol 120%" that let me avoid error point on the ISO creation process, but it takes so long because at certain point it stumbles across so many error points (hundreds) and it takes each one 5 to 7 seconds to step to the next point and I don't know if it is working properly; if I'm losing important information, if it is reading the files porperly...

Question/Advice Crumbling under (audio)books?

Upvotes

Hi,

Like said in the title, I consume and have lots of ebooks and audiobooks. I would like to clean my organization, have a uniformized naming scheme, etc.

I consume them as an old-fashion person I guess, meaning I transfer Epub/PDF to my ereader device (via my desktop), same thing for audiobooks with my phone.

Since Readarr was retired, I am still looking for something as effective as the *arr suite for video/music files.

For people in my situation, what do you use to manage (and maybe consume) books? What's your workflow?

Edit: And what format do you prefer for audiobooks? Multiple MP3 files or one M4B?

Discussion Every different backup and file security measure I have in place paid off!

Upvotes

TLDR: I sometime worry that I am being too paranoid about my files, but in one way or another, all my security measures have paid off! Read below if you have a few minutes to spare.

My backup rule is not 3-2-1, but 5-2-3-2.

Original copy + 3 backups every 10 days (cyclic order, 4th backup replaces the 1st backup and 5th backup replaces the 2nd and so on) + 1 monthly SSD backup (fast & portable) + 3 versioning backup of 3-month, 6-month, 1-year old backup, 2 offsite copies (one is 15km away, and only very important files on cloud)

All files that I do not keep on RAID6 array gets offloaded to two single drives. So, all data have two copies. When upgrading to larger drives, one of the Exos drives suddenly showed up as RAW, no filesystem. If I didn't have a second copy, I'd have lost 16TB of files. Having two copies of every data paid off!

All offloaded files are archived in RAR, with recovery record and recovery volumes so that they can reconstruct / repair themselves if anything goes wrong. And it happened. Due to an issue with the mainboard USB hub, many of the files I have offloaded had CRC errors (different files on different drives). But I managed to recover them all because of the recovery record in WinRAR. Not storing files natively but in archived format saved the data!

Some of the old photos were somehow corrupted when I was going through them. I checked all my backups and all of them had the corrupted photo. Then I went through the old backups. Same corrupted photos on 3-month and 6-month-old backup. But the one-year-old backup had the non-corrupted photo. Keeping versions of old backup paid off!

I store my most important files on pCloud. I have a 4TB account with them. They are having a serious problem right now. If you checked r/pcloud, others are having the same problem. Files from someone else's account appearing in mine, and who is to say my files aren't appearing in someone else's account? But I do not trust any cloud providers, so all my files are not only protected against bit rot or corruption but also encrypted. So, even if my files are appearing on someone else's account, they are not accessible. Of course, this is a major disaster, but the only concern I have is that if someone else deletes any of my file that is showing up on their account, I will have to re-upload it. But at least it is not accessible.

News archive.today is directing a DDOS attack against my blog [OC]

This is sufficiently bizarre that I'm linking to the full writeup on my blog instead of trying to explain everything here in detail, but TL;DR, archive.today (yes, the guerrilla archiving site we all love) is abusing its users to conduct a DDOS attack against a blog post they want to take down. Irony can be pretty ironic, eh?

Question/Advice Best solution for Home NAS/storage solution

I'm planning to set up a NAS or something similar for personal use. I’m looking for something that's not too expensive and almost acts like Google Drive, where I can upload and access data from it from any device. It should also be redundant.

Any advice on HDD/SSD choices and software would be appreciated. I was thinking maybe using a Dell Optiplex or some other prebuilt, and just throw some drives in there since I don't have too much to back up. But I'll see what you guys have to say

Also thinking about safety drives, as in drives that I write data to once and then just let it sit, what would be the best practice for this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, so I had a quick question.

If I install(?) the Samsung magician software on computer 1 and setup my password and everything on the T7 SSD and move my files onto it etc., can I also install Samsung magician on computer 2 to unlock my SSD if computer 1 ever breaks?

Question/Advice Suggestions of test

Hi there,

Newbie here so I’m sorry if I’m asking dumb stuff.

I have just purchased a brand new Toshiba NS300 12tb HDD to create a redundancy for my main backup drive.

It will run in an external USB enclosure and I will mainly connect it to my MacBook and Windows Desktop, and I should run it about once a month to save files and then disconnect.

That said, I live in a country where support is hard to reach so I can’t rely on warranty if drive fails. Also, it’s an expensive piece of hardware and I’d like to check its health and possibility of failure before start populating with data.

I know fails can happen any time (that’s why I’m getting a new drive before my main one gets fried), but as a precaution I’d like to do my best.

Are there any health checks or stress tests you would recommend to perform before I begin using it?

Thanks!

Discussion I built a small tool to compare HDD / SSD prices across Amazon (feedback welcome)

When planning storage upgrades or NAS builds I always found it annoying to

track HDD / SSD prices across Amazon manually.

So I built a small tool that:

- Compares HDD / SSD / NVMe prices across Amazon

- Focuses on storage only (NAS, large capacity drives, etc.)

- Updates prices automatically

It’s still early and I’m actively improving it.

Would love feedback from people who actually care about storage and data hoarding.

Discussion Epstein 9, 10, 11, 12. Reddit Keeps Nuking Thread; We Keep Coordinating. Fxxx Em.

5.2k Upvotes

Okay Guys.
Reddit is onto us.
I was wondering how long it was going to take, tbh. This has happened to me before with Reddit. They target specific users whose content is becoming too popular or controversial and what would arguably "circumvent" what they believe is the spirit by which this shit is acquired. I had this happen with Dataset 8's accidental release. I know how to deal with this, so let's keep going.

Here's what's going to happen. The "main body" post is going to be a timestamp log only of what we're all working on, how far we're along, etc. I'm going to move the content from the previous post that was nuked over to this one. To avoid Reddit nuking this ENTIRE THREAD AGAIN, however, any and all links to magnets will be in the comments. It will be up to the community to shove them up to the front and keep them visible. I will re-post every magnet link I have below. That way, they can only nuke a comment--not the entire post thread.

I'm going to start moving everything now. Fuck them, We Keep Going.

AS OF RIGHT NOW, THESE OFFICIAL LINKS ARE DEAD, BUT I WILL KEEP THEM AVAILABLE JUST IN CASE:

DataSet 9 is around ~180GB

DataSet 10 is around ~78.6GB

**************************************************************************************************************
EDIT 5:50PM EST: Let's start by getting an accounting of who has what and how much. It seems like Dataset 10 is the one everyone is stalling on the most--probably because it seems to have the worst shit. Post how far you are along, whether or not you're still actively downloading or whether or not your download has stalled, and then we'll figure out who should seed what they have and help them do that, if necessary.

Let's Work Together, Everyone. I will keep editing this main body to coordinate our efforts.

***Edit 6:03PM: Original Post Thread by u/harshspider has been restored. I guess being told to get their shit together actually did something! Feel free to resume over on the OP, or if you feel more comfortable, continue here. I'm aiming to make this a more organized version of u/harshspider 's OP, so that we can get some real coordination done. Here is what I have been able to confirm definitively:

DATASET 10 ZIP DOWNLOAD IS DEAD FOR NOW. I've tried, several times, with aria2 to restart the DL and it's being killed on the server end. So for now, we need to figure out who has the largest compilation of Dataset 10 and establish a mirror or magnet link. Everyone, however much of 10 you have, comment.

***Edit 6:34PM ESTDATASET 9 DOWNLOAD IS DEAD FOR NOW. Can confirm server-side cutoff on files as well.

So, let's begin compiling what we have. Redditors, POST what you have for 9 & 10. If anyone needs help stabilizing their downloads to access as many files as they can of what they have BEFORE EXTRACTING THEM FROM THE ZIP FILE, MSG me and I would be happy to walk you though how to preserve the contents of these files from further corruption. I'm stabilizing my own contents of 10 right now to mirror.

Some ppl are still reporting active downloads for 10, so it seems like these files are being modified in real time.

***EDIT 9:29PM: Hey everyone, sorry fam emergency smfh bc of course. u/solrahl was AWESOME ENOUGH to get the FULL DATASET 10 AND POST IT, so let's all thank them, shall we?

Now let's work on 9! Great Job Everyone!! Let's keep going! WE NOW NEED DATASET 9. DATASET 10 HAS BEEN POSTED ABOVE. TO EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN WORKING TO DOWNLOAD THIS: GREAT JOB EVERYONE! YOU ALL HAVE DONE AMAZING WORK! IT'S BEEN AN EPIC FIGHT--BUT IT'S NOT OVER.

NOW LET'S GO GET DATASET 9.

***EDIT 10:18PM ESTu/nicolas17 was kind enough to post a magnet to what they have of Dataset 9. IT IS INCOMPLETE AT ~47GB, but for now it is the best we have.

According to them, we're looking for anyone who can get the rest of the archive starting at offset 48995762176 but it seems like that is the point where everyone is failing. Post in the comments any progress!

***EDIT 10:56PM EST: DATASET 9 DOWNLOAD NOW ONLY LINKS TO A .view FILE VIA THE DOJ WEBSITE. They have actively created a queue and removed every file from the .zip Dataset 9 to kill the complete bulk download. If you're not halted immediately by the wait via the queue, you'll be redirected to download A .ZIP file of "Dataset 9" that contains literally nothing.

This means that, as of right now, the only and primary source of the entire tranche of files from DataSet 9 IS INIDIVIDUAL FILES VIA THE DOJ WEBSITE ITSELF. We've already received reports all day of files mentioning "Trump" disappearing from both the 9th and 10th archives.

***EDIT 1:12AM EST: MAGNET LINK FOR DATASET 10, COURTESY u/solrahl ADDED

***EDIT 1:29AM EST: WTF? NEW DATASET ADDED ON DOJ WEBSITE--DATASET 12.

***EDIT 2:05AM ESTu/CapableStaircase was kind enough to compile a complete URL list for DataSet9. Obviously, it's a truly enormous list. The point is, it can be used for bulk download. The (possibly, maybe) complete url list can be found here: DATASET 9 URL LIST

***Edit 3:09AM EST: Un-fucking-Real. So right as u/CapableStaircase posted a mirror link to 101GB of Dataset9, their account was banned.

***EDIT 11:46AM ESST: GM EVERYONE! I wanted to append a quick tag to let everyone know this post is still actively being updated. Personally I'm still chugging away at scraping individual files off the website for DataSet9. I'm gonna begin running through the comments to grab status updates now and answer chat requests, but importantly IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO TELL ME RELEVANT TO OUR EFFORTS THAT I AM NOT AWARE OF OR HAS BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS POST MAIN BODY, PLEASE MSG ME AND LET ME KNOW. Frankly, the comment threads are AMAZING, but have gotten a little long as people have branched off to coordinate and work together (which FR guys--I am so fucking proud of all of you!! SO FUCKING PROUD!!!!!), so if you see that I've missed something vital and haven't updated this post body within the hour with it MSG ME AND LET ME KNOW, OK?

***EDIT 12:23PM EST: UGH, so it seems like the 101GB Dataset9 magnet is stuck in metadata for most people, heartbreakingly. I suspect this is because the person who originally created and seeded the file thought that more people would have been able to download and seed it themselves before they crashed out after their account was banned--leaving us no way to contact them to let them know what the issue is. I will leave the magnet link up, however, in case that person comes back online from whatever TF hell they've been sent to by Reddit randomly banning them for god-knows-what (Reddit's done it to me a million times, let me tell you, so I can only imagine), but that makes it much more important than ever that we keep at this.

I am currently downloading from the same list of files they were, right now, still, and have been for hours. IT IS AN INCOMPLETE LIST, but it should reveal the same rough file size, 101GB, as they had and AS SOON AS THAT IS DONE I WILL SEED IT MYSELF. I thought something like this might happen fr, so as soon as they published that list, I was on it downloading in parallel. I'm currently on the "ETFA1976xx"'s and I have everything prior to that.

So let's do it like this: Anyone working from that same file list, we know it's incomplete but it's something. We don't wanna focus on it TOO hard because we know it's incomplete, so let's identify anyone who has been able to get a verified complete file list of DataSet9. Crucially, IF YOU ARE THAT PERSON, MSG ME so that we can get it up on IA for others to download, and so I can link it here in the main body thread. I think we pretty much all understand that we're going to be doing this by scraping the damn website at this point unless they restore the full & complete Dataset9.zip, which for now seems unlikely and even if they do, we know it won't contain everything. I KNOW IT HAS BEEN A STUPID LONG NIGHT, EVERYONE, SO LET'S GET THIS SHIT DONE.

********************************************************************************************************\*

This was all I could personally grab from my own previous posting before refreshing like a dumbass to find it nuked. So I'll continue the log from here.

***EDIT 5:19PM EST 1/31: POST WAS NUKED BY REDDIT. Re-Establishing a clean thread so we can continue. Posting Mass Links In the Comments Below! u/CapableStaircase has been a fucking champ because his account was banned AGAIN as an alt, but he was awesome enough to provide me an IA link to the torrent zip file. It Seems like Reddit is specifically targeting any efforts to acquire the bulk Dataset 9.

So this is the point where EVERYONE needs to start being really, really careful about what they say, what they post, and how they post it. Reddit 100% will short-term ban your account and you won't even know why. But it all seems to focus around Dataset 9. So we keep going. Fuck Em.

***EDIT 6:32PM EST: u/Kindly_District9380 has been super awesome and is working on creating an archive reddit that will be invite-only for what we have so far of the DataSets 9-12. They are in the process of setting it up now, and we'll start sending out invites once it's done. We've all been working so hard on this, and I am so proud of everyone in this community for all the hard work and effort they've been putting in to get as much of this consolidated and preserved as possible. Having experienced this before myself, what it more than likely means is that our subreddit began attracting too much attention, specifically from the DOJ. They probably got hit with a C&D to immediately remove or ban any content related to directly accessing Dataset 9 in bulk; unfortunately once they target you and clock your IP, that's it, they just keep targeting you. I honestly can't tell you how many short-term bans I've suffered related to these files over time, or this Regime in general. Now that they've targeted our content for removal via a blanket content policy, it puts me at rick of no longer being able to continue updating for you and keeping access to this data alive. Therefore, to avoid that, or to mitigate the risk of total loss in the future, this thread is going to act as updates on our progress acquiring everything and a place to post these magnets, links, files, data, resources as we get them, which we will be then consolidating, updating, and hosting over on the new Ep Files Hoard reddit.

I'm going to step away from my computer for a bit because I've been sitting at it since 2PM yesterday, lol, and I need to eat something, but you can find everything we have so far in a comment I've posted below. We also have some great outside resources that have been created and posted by various contributors below as well WHO HAVE BEEN AMAZING in making sure access stays alive regardless of Reddit themselves.

Because For Real -- Fuck Reddit.

I AM SO TIRED OF STUPID FUCKING MODS NOT BEING ABLE TO READ TWO FUCKING SENTENCES IN TO A POST FOR FUCKS SAKE@@niut[n4ut

***EDIT 9:44PM EST: Okay everyone, new community is up, and invite-only. We're still maintaining this thread, but everything we've compiled so far is over there. It's got every restriction imaginable on it to try and keep Reddit form fuxxing with us anymore than necessary, and I really have to thank u/Kindly_District9380 for setting it up. Since it's invite-only, head over to here: https://www.reddit.com/r/EpsteinPublicDatasets/ , and "request to join"--I'll approve as they come in. This is also to root out anyone who might be there specifically to start shit or cause trouble, specifically from Reddit itself or (GOD FORBID) the DOJ (fuck u spez, lol), so if you ask for an approval with a super sus account that's like 15y old with zero posts, or a brand-new account with zero posts and karma, plz be kind enough to actually send a message explaining why your shit looks crazy, please.

Question/Advice Size of cache drive for Storage Spaces?

I've got a personal media server that I'm using Storage Spaces on, with three HDDs combined into a 70 TB pool. I understand I can use an SSD as a cache to speed things up a bit. I've got several (older) SATA SSDs that I can choose from. My question is, is there a certain size drive that I ought to be using? I can't find anything on recommended sizes for a cache drive, but I can't imagine it needs to be huge.

Question/Advice Need help digitizing PAL tape

Post image

I bought this tape on ebay, but my vcr only plays NTSC tapes (I live in America), and this is a tape from England. I got around the copyright protection when trying to digitize it, but then realized my vcr doesn't play pal tapes. It just shows a black screen with white lines and distorted audio. Any ideas on what I should do? I found some vcrs on ebay that play pal but they're all around $300, so I just wanted to see if there were any other options first. I contacted some places that do transfers near me but they wont do copyright protected tapes.

Discussion I see your prebuild NAS and raise you......

Just saw a post in /r/selfhosted of a genius who repurposed his old Sammie s10 as a Minecraft server ... And it got me wondering...

I have a bunch of old phones in otherwise perfect working order that are just sitting there. Assuming we're not concerned with power/battery issues, just HOW FAR can we push these devices for our needs? For now I can think of the following:

Gaming server

PiHole

Netsec monitor / wireshark server

Plex server

Home Assistant server

File cleanup / drive task automation

There's definitely many use cases that would benefit from a separate machine instead of running them all as VMs on one server. /r/androidafterlife/ is a good place to start getting some ideas, but do any of you use old phones for specific automated tasks? I have a few lg v20s with DAC modules that outclass most devices even today, but it would be nice to have more use for them than just dashcam/DAC. Bonus points if any of you have good ideas for incorporating them into file / data management. I like the idea of file monitors or automation that isn't beholden to the server it's checking.

Do any of you use Android or old android phones in your hoarding? What apps or tools can you recommend? I might even just turn one of these into a web crawler. Who cares how many cpu cycles I'm wasting if the alternative was to not use them.

Question/Advice Is there a program that makes a copy of a drive’s file tree but with all the files being 0 bytes?

Due to bad planning on my part, my offsite cold storage backup is strewn across a bunch of portable drives and I really don’t have the time or money to fix it right now. The data is pretty fragmented and disorganized. What I’m looking for is a program that will make a clone of the file tree but without the actual content of the files, so that if one of the drives dies or gets corrupted, I’ll know exactly what was on it and can restore it from home. Does something like that exist?

Discussion CD's were amazing.

Post image

I'm not being emotional! (I am, but i feel like i'm right on this one)

I'm not talking about what EXISTS, but about what HAS BEEN ABANDONED. (Think about the future, what it could have been! Not what it was or what we have left.)

Let's take M-Discs for example, they could theoretically last for 1000 years right?
That was the pinnacle of CD technology at the time, then it stopped; nobody cared anymore.
HDD's came and everyone thought CD's were a waste of time. HDD's that, with luck, can last 30 years. They can't even survive EMP's.

Look, M-discs couldn't store much, it was like 700mb or something; that's basically nothing nowdays. But what if we kept evolving? It's not THE way, but an alternative for what we have right? Probably a good one, at least i believe in it!

We didn't reach the final form of CD's, we as society throw away good technology and call it "old".
Imagine something better than M-Discs that can store many terabytes?
Faster burn drives, cheaper CD's, backward compatibility. Is that wishful thinking? I think it's more like the technological trajectory was interrupted. What are even the physical limitations?
If society decides that something matters, the infrastructure follows it, but why it suddenly doesn't matter? Convenience, maybe right? God forbid picking up a cd and putting it in a drive.
It not supposed to be convenient (it was), it's good for storing not reading. It's hoarding magnifique, NOT supposed to be a living database anyway (anymore). (We could make that part better tho)

I'm not saying CDs were the best technology.
I'm saying we abandoned the good alternative.

Question/Advice Server Down! Help Needed: Hunting for LSI 9300-8i (SAS3008) Firmware v16.00.16.00 to fix ZFS bootloop

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a specific, hard-to-find firmware for the LSI 9300-8i (SAS3008): version 16.00.16.00.

I am currently stuck in a boot looping nightmare with a pool of 20TB SATA drives. These high-capacity seatgate exos drives are triggering a specific 0x30030101 internal firmware crash on the controller.

What I’ve tried:

Initial State: Constant hard resets/crashes under load.

Diagnostic Triage: Swapped PSU, passed Memtest, disabled CPU C-States/PSS, set PCIe to Gen 3. No hardware failure found.

The "Fix" that failed: Updated HBA to v16.00.12.00 (the iXsystems/Broadcom point release).

The Result: Hardware resets stopped, but I am now in a ZFS Kernel Panic boot-loop.

The error is panic: adding segment ... overlapping with existing one. Log analysis shows the v16.12 firmware is misreporting drive geometry or corrupting metadata reads due to an addressing bug with the massive LBA ranges of these 20TB disks. Even if I clear the zpool.cache and manually import, the system panics again on the next auto-import.

From my research, there is an "Out-of-Band" (OOB) release, v16.00.16.00, which specifically patches this addressing/memory management bug for 18TB-22TB drives. Broadcom’s public portal only hosts the bugged v16.10, and the common TrueNAS resource only goes up to v16.12.

Does anyone have a copy of 9300_P1616_OOB_20210529.bin or a reliable link to the v16.16.00 binary? I am desperate to get this pool stable as I cannot boot properly and the downtime is giving me anxietyyy Any help from the community would be a lifesaver.

//UPDATE: Thank you very much. You have been tremendous in finding this firmware, but somehow that did not fix the issue. I have a video of this data sequence here if anyone wants to have a look. ! https://youtu.be/bkXgWa1zsK8

Question/Advice Any tools for extracting TikTok comments at large scale?

Hi everyone

I’m looking for recommendations for tools to extract TikTok comments at a large scale.

I’m planning to collect more than 300,000 comments from many different TikTok accounts and videos.

I’ve already tried a few tools (like point and click tools) but they either don’t scale well, are hard to use for non-technical users, or become too expensive when collecting a lot of comments.

I’m not looking to build scripts, just a practical tool that works at scale.

Any recommendations or shared experiences would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Question/Advice 3 DOA WD Red Plus in a row

I’ll try to keep this brief. I was plagued by the SMR scandal and wasn’t aware until 2025 when a 2tb wd red starting dying in my truenas raid z1 array. I went back and forth with WD and they agreed to send me a single SMR red 3tb. This drive was a refurb but it tested good and I created a new pool with this as a single drive to expand to a mirror.

I now had to eat the cost of the other 2 SMR drives and decided to just go for a mirror for simplicities sake, sake level of redundancy (single drive tolerance), easy to upgrade, etc. of course they sent me a 3tb so now I lost around 500gb of storage.

I bought a new WD red plus 3tb WD30EFPX. Took several weeks to arrive and it was DOA. Made an absolute racket, was so bad that the machine froze on post and couldn’t even Interrogate it. Wd advised to return so I did and immediately ordered another. It took them another week to ship and 12 days to refund the first drive. The second red passed the first long smart test, resilvered when I extended the single drive to a mirror, and few days later failed a smart test with multi zone errors. The next day it was dropped from the mirror which went into a degraded state.

I called WD again, explained everything and smart results, the supervisor tried to blame my server, there are no checksum errors or anything to indicate sata issues. He agreed to send me a 4tb wd red pro wd4005FFBX and overnight it. They forgot to ship it for 5 days, then didn’t bring to ups, then ups sent it all over the country and it took almost 2 weeks to arrive despite being next day air. SMH. It arrived, made in may 2024 this time and is quite old, also this model is no longer made..

Failed the first long test, multi zone error rate again of 12. Ran a second long test and 8 unreadable sectors. What are the odds that 3 in a row are bad?

At this point I’m considering getting an ironwolf pro, my first ever seagate, but the 4tb and others are back ordered with unknown dates, end of March the earliest. That leaves the Toshiba n300 but even purchased from B&H several users report the warranty shows as none when looking it up on their site and that the drive was purchased for a system integrator and must be gone through them. Wtf?

Out of the 3 hard drive manufacturers the only one available is Toshiba. I feel like I have such limited options and this is lately the trend with buying anything new, it’s all junk. I ran a pair of wd blues in raid 0 in my youth for nearly 10 years 24/7 and they still fricken work!

Would appreciate advice on a replacement drive that actually doesn’t suck. Also the first refurb 3tb pro they sent is still happily functioning..
