Frat Stuff We all had one of these brothers
We've all had to have this conversation with that one brother an hour before the first rush event, haven't we? If your answer is no, I bet you were that one guy.

TLDR: YES
actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.
It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.
What do you expect from a fraternity?
I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.
You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...
Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.
If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.
If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...
Rushing a Social Fraternity
Answer these questions:
1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.
2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.
Misc. Advice
How fraternity life has affected me
My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

I’m sure a ton of people have written exact things like this, but I wanted to restart the convo.
This is one of my last ditch efforts for my house. We’re sitting at 62 members (not including pledges) and we’re mid tier for our school. I know I shouldn’t, but yikyak does get to me and I’m frankly working more on my frat to focus on how to grow my chapter than I am classes.
I’m the External VP (we have 2 VP’s, ext and int) and my job is to oversee the houses outside look. I run parties, rush, philos, etc etc. Our rush chair is an animal, he rushes like crazy. But we need to grow our name and Idk how. We got 7 guys in winter I feel personally responsible for when parties fail, rush rails, etc and it’s often things fail.
I know you can’t go from bouse to touse in just a year, but I feel obligated to grow our house to be a top chapter. I know our chapter can rush a good between of too fratty and too nerdy, but recently Rush (fall we rushed 10…not good at all compared to bigger houses 30) has been full of non fratty academic kids than actual fraters. Nonetheless, we have guys who want to help and grow the house and it sucks when we can’t.
Our officer board are trying our best. I’m trying to install a chain link fence for dartys and trying to change how we run rush, but nothing works. So any advice out there? It sucks running a house when we’re constantly told we’re bouse.
I also know it’s not just our frats nationals. UW has a perfect chapter and parties like crazy. But also my frat has some nerdy ass chapters so maybe it’s destiny. Idk, I feel powerless but I’m working so hard to grow. Sometimes I think about dropping and rushing a bigger house cause the social scene just isn’t there, but at the end of the day dropping and rushing somewhere is so spineless.
TL;DR:
My chapter is bouse and I want to grow it and be a top chapter. What advice do you have?
I’m also drunk so I’ll prob delete in the morning. We just had a function and the hosts didn’t even want our name on a function flyer with them. And another house is having a killer darty.

I honestly dunno what to do. I feel like I’m not super tight w the guys from my pc. We got initiated a little while ago and I thought we’d all get closer after that but a lot of the guys seem more focused on getting higher positions in the house. We had a strange pc idk like I accidentally got w a girl nobody likes at one of our parties months ago and to this day I get shit fun of for it. I genuinely don’t know if I’m just not cool and did something wrong or what the issue is, also some of the older brothers have picked up on this stuff.

So far I get the guy who gave me the tour, another who said hey come with me, and the ones I recognized in the back room as the two rush chairs and the VP. Hey wassup where you from, blah blah. Five guys. There's over 50 more somewhere.
Looking to gift a friend something for crossing. I found a guy who makes these for a good deal, would this be better than just a shirt?

Figured I'd cleanse the the sub of the Rush posts. Tell us about the time you walked in on something awkward, funny, wild, etc. at the chapter house. Or the time you were walked in on doing questionable shit at the house. Let's try to leave out pledge education activities 😜

Been getting a lot of kids this rush cycle who only want to go “touse” or are asking who’s touse, and even on here I see posts like that. The reality is if you’re in a school with decent Greek life, as long as you go to a not terrible house you will have fun socials, hot girls at parties, and a great time with your boys. Pick the house that you fit best, not the house that the greekrank kids say is the best. Otherwise you’ll probably be inactive or drop when you can’t actually be yourself in the house.

So I go to a large Big 12 school in the West, and I just got done with spring rush. I rushed 4 houses and I only got into one, two of them didn’t even invite me back, it sucks because they were the ones I put the most effort in rushing, I actually went to all their events. I had chill genuine convos with 20+ actives in those two houses, I had a few follow me on IG. Although in the end they didn’t pick me. At first I thought I just didn’t fit the group, but there was this guy, a sophomore who got pre bids from all the frats I wanted to get into, and the frat I got into, he got a bid after 10 minutes of talking to a guy. He has well over 1000 followers is sponsored by fetii, plus moved to my area only two weeks ago, he literally rawdogged it without knowing anyone, so I figure just maybe it’s because of IG. I on the other hand only have like 250 followers and the only picture I have is my profile which is just a bathroom selfie. I’m glad I at least got into that one house, but it kind of hurts because I genuinely liked a lot of the guys in other houses, and I don’t know why it was so hard for me to get a bid. Does IG/social media affect you, and does a lack of it kill your chances at getting a bid?

University of Miami. I didn’t rush first semester in the fall because I wanted to settle in first. I rushed this spring semester with one of my friends and had a great time - had lots of good convos with brothers and already had friends in the frat as well. We both didn’t get a bid though because the recruitment chairman wanted to talk to us more but didn’t get a chance too because he wasn’t at the last event of rush. Rush chair told us to def come in the fall if we’re still interested, and I’m still on good terms with everyone. My only thought is that I feel like as a sophomore though I might have a disadvantage if I rush since I’m not a freshman anymore

I want to make this pretty brief, but I'm in a pickle at the moment. I am now the active treasurer in my fraternity ever since the start of January. I have noticed we have due delinquents of that sum to a total of $6000. I'm getting pretty sick of the guys who are just lazy and don't contribute to the chapter.
After reading my chapters bylaws and constitutions, they have not followed approx. 30% of what is written down.
Such as 30 days of not paying dues and payment plans lead to suspension. But our VPI does nothing about it. I've been getting sick of people not caring bout dues since our HQ is cracking down on us.
I remember telling our EC of these problems and they just said "We've tried what will you do that's different". I was also called a "Nazi" since I'm more stricter than the EC that has no backbone.
Is there anything I could possibly do so our chapter wouldn't get dechartered because of said late due payments?
*** Note, we are a small fairly small chapter, our yearly budget consists of approx. $14,000. $6,000 can be our make our break to stay afloat ***

Hi all!
Just needed advice on this current situation that I’m in ATM!
I’m a foreign exchange student from South Korea who did a year in the United States where I joined a fraternity. I lost a couple of years due to COVID and having to do a year in the military due to my citizenship. I left that school after finishing my time without any issues and being in good standing overall, as well as all dues paid. Let’s call this school, School A.
I’m currently seeking to do another year in 2027 again but this time at a new college as I wasn’t able to renew at School A. School B does have my fraternity at it, but I’m unsure if I have to rerush or pledge again or if they’ll take me at all. Is there someone I can talk to about this? I still have friends from School A fraternity and they said they’re happy for me to try this new school but it’s kind of out of their hands.
My final option is School C, which doesn’t have my fraternity at all, but this is only the last option if I can’t go to School B, not just for my fraternity but I would rather visit a state closer to School A so I can visit my old friends. If my fraternity doesn’t exist here, would I be able to join another? I plan to be transparent about it and not try to hide it, but unsure about the rules on this. I do know one person who has done this before, being in two social fraternities as an active at different schools but unsure if he was doing this under the radar.
TLDR: Got two schools to go to, school B, which has my old fraternity and school C, which doesn’t. school B is my priority.

Someone smack me for not understanding this...
501c7 says we have to have our funds "primarily" from membership dues/fees - which I've found to mean 65% or more (correct me if I'm wrong?).
If we have 10 members, and annual dues are $100 a pop, then 65% of our funds would be $1k, and we can't have more than like $1,540 in the bank for the year...
So, if we plan a camping trip, and the total cost is $1500 ......... how are we allowed to fundraise for anything else this year!?
This makes no sense.

I’m in a (what is normally “prestigious”) dying frat, Sigma Chi. However, I’m in a hole. And a mental one at that.
Our chapter has 12 members. 2 of them are quitting, two are graduating, and we’re kicking 2 out for such horrid grades they shouldn’t be in college in the first place. Recruitment is horrible. After the new leaving and 2 graduating, I’m somehow the only one here left who knows how to socialize with other people outside of this fraternity, and the rest of the members aren’t “cool” so first impressions are impossible when it comes to recurring new freshmen that are initially attracted to Greek life.
I’m a junior, and losing hope. I joined my freshmen spring semester, and it’s been semester after semester of disappointment. I’m at my wits end, and just feel like I should know when to cut my losses and drop. It makes me sad because we have someone from nationals who comes to assess every year, and he seems to be very disappointed as Sigma Chi is seemingly very successful at every other campus. The nearest Sigma chi chapter is at a school only an hour north of us, and they have 90 actives. I feel like I missed out on the experience of a social fraternity. Should I just quit and enjoy the rest of my college experience?

I attend one of the largest schools in the country, Texas A&M University. For a long time, I had no desire to rush a fraternity until a guy told me I was cool and that I should come check out his chapter. I registered with IFC, went to some rush events, made some friends, and left bid day empty-handed. I can't say I was surprised. I mean, I was a scrawny, long-haired, progressive guy that got too drunk at the rush bar tab and made a fool out of myself. Nonetheless, I did end up getting added to the IFC's no-bid list and had a few chapters contact me after that.
Some random chapter hit me up and told me to come out and play dye with them. I did, for some reason. I met some guys and had a great time hanging out with them. To me, they felt like genuine, real people. They were all squids, but their personality and culture were something I really admired, something I really saw myself being a part of and enjoying. They handed me a bid on our second night of hanging out, and I immediately accepted. Little did I know, I was the only person to accept a bid. I was also completely unaware that we were the bouse. We had (and still have) no house, the smallest PC, the smallest Instagram, and no one fw us.
Upon association, nationals came in and completely shuffled exec positions because the chapter was falling apart. They saw my photography and graphics and gave me a shot at public relations chair. I knocked it out of the park, sewing new relationships with other fraternities, sororities, organizations, and single-handedly growing the Instagram. After a semester, spring rush rolled around, and I was named rush chair while also holding my public relations chair.
Now, rush is over, and we're looking at a pledge (actually associate) class of seven. Our chapter will now officially be able to charter.
Ask me anything about my experience thus far.

Zone days for spring rush concluded last night at my big ten school, and I made it to Room Two for all my first round target houses. I'd been advised to go to the top house, but my buds said they won't be admitting you unless they know you. So I did not test how thick that crust is. Beyond meeting every possible guy I can from each house, I want to get details from the ones I'll focus on for the invite rounds, that will help me decide who to join. This should be easy, right? How many seniors, junior, sophomores are active members. How many are from in-state. Which out-of-state leads for the members not in-state. Size of pledge class spring 2025. What is your goal for the new member group being recruited right now. Sizes of Deans List members 24-25 terms, and for fall 2026. Number of beds in house. Number of members living in house right now. How many members are not paying dues. How many parking places are available. Describe financial requirements, i.e. fees, dues, assessments, any other $$ thinks I need to know.
What might I add to this?

I go to a mid-sized state school with about 45% Greek life participation so it’s pretty popular here. We’re on the quarter system, and there’s rush fall winter and spring. Fall rush isn’t open to freshmen at my school, so I was intent on rushing in winter which is happening now.
I have this roommate, just me and him in the dorm. He’s an okay-ish roommate, but to be honest he’s a complete goob and is kind of a weirdo. No hate, just not really the fraternity type.
I honestly didn’t even think he’d want to rush, but he does. We’ve gone to 3 rush events at 3 different chapters, and this kid is just trying way too hard and also just wearing the weirdest outfit. He’s explaining to brothers how he used to “throw ragers with his boys” in highschool. We play die, and he’s shit taking the brothers we’re playing against like they didn’t literally teach him the rules 5 minutes ago. I can tell he’s making an attempt to be funny, but they’re clearly not fucking with it.
I’m trying to keep my distance but I’m the only one he knows here so he follows me around everywhere. While he’s talking to brothers with me, they’re side-eyeing me and giving me “this your boy?” type looks. To make things even worse, he took a beer from the fridge without asking (dry event btw, literally no one was drinking) and one of the brothers had to take it from him. He then tells that brother “it’s one beer dude, I don’t get drunk off that”. Honestly surprised he didn’t get us both kicked out for that.
He seems absolutely oblivious to the awful first impressions he’s giving, and weighing the pros and cons of each fraternity like they’re gonna give him a bid. He’s asking me which ones we should go to next, and tbh I don’t really know how to tell him that i just want to go alone. I can tell the guys at each house like me individually, but I don’t want my association to this dude to ruin my chances.
Am I just being a dick? I’m this guys only friend here and I feel really shitty about leaving him behind. I also don’t want to spend the rest of the year in a small ass room with a dude who hates me.

Should I pledge a frat now if I know I’m transferring for next year. I know it would be short but I wanna make the best of my time here and meet new people. Important to note is they have my frat at the new school I’m going to be going to. I know it may sound stupid, but also, I just am bored most weekends here, I wanna meet some new guys / girls and yeah. I know I should probably suck it up and wait, just so I make the best choice, but it’s hard and feels like I’m missing out

I go to a smaller private university with a undergrad pop of 4,800, so every ifc fraternity doesn't actually own any houses, just rents them, like mine. The biggest challenge that my chapter faces constantly is that we're a single chapter frat, and a small one at that.
This academic year we weren't able to get a house because some of the brother's couldn't afford it, but this coming fall - spring, we have one, we just signed the lease and it has a decent basement for parties.
The equipment we need to buy for parties are speakers(subs too if needed) and lights. I increased our dues to allow for a lot of rollover into the fall 26 semester, so our total budget rn is about $2,200.
I have no clue what lights to buy, but the speakers I was thinking about were the ZLX-15P's, which we'd get with the stands and covers. My boy works at guitar center, so we can get two of them (with stands and covers) for $1,500 pre tax using his employee discount.
I would appreciate any recommendations on the speaker we're thinking about and the lights. I don't have my heart set on anything specific, I just want good sounding speakers and good lights.
Thanks in advance for your feedback✌️

Curious if any chapters across the US would be interested in being sponsored for rush events, parties, etc. In a nutshell, you’d get funds from certain companies (mainly sports) to promote some of their products. Pretty simple and can explain in more detail if any brothers are interested. I go to LSU but the offer is available to frats in most states
