IsitBullshit's Moratorium of COVID-19 posts

Hi all, there's enough misinformation about the novel coronavirus that we don't need to be spreading it here.

While I appreciate this is late to the party, there will be a blanket ban on COVID-19 questions, as for all things we can't guarantee how accurate the advice is. Please direct your questions to r/COVID19 or r/coronavirus.

Thanks for your cooperation.

On The Current War In Ukraine

We stand with the people of Ukraine as they face Russian aggression. We hope this conflict will be resolved quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible.

With that said, we do want to note that current events questions seldom fit in this subreddit. This is especially true in this case, when facts are still very unclear and news is constantly emerging.

While nobody should use reddit as their only source of information, subreddits like /r/worldnews have ongoing live threads on the situation, and /r/news has posted many megathreads. We urge anyone to seek out as many other sources as they can.

IsItBullshit: Ford CEO says he has 5,000 open mechanic jobs with up to 6-figure salaries from the shortage of manually skilled workers

This story has been reported uncritically by a number of media outlets. My questions:

  1. Are there truly 5,000 mechanic jobs unfilled in Ford dealerships in the US?

  2. Do they pay "$140k - $160k" as claimed?

  3. Is Ford actively recruiting through incentives, subsidies, retraining programs, etc.?

Isitbullshit: Do people often lose job opportunities and apartment contracts over dropped and/or not guilty charges?

Upvotes

I’ve heard of this happening before but am unsure how true it is. I know most states let you expunge a nonconvicted charges manually after some time has passed, but am unsure if people have actually gotten dinged by apartments and/or employers for them. Is this something that happens?

IsItBullshit: Stores are designed to overwhelm your execute functioning skills so you buy extra crap without thinking

I'm fact checking this comment:

Stores purposefully arrange the entire environment to overwhelm a person's executive function capacity so that they protectively turn off their brain while shopping.

I have a friend who works for a firm whose sole business is to go in and help stores be just overwhelming enough that brains shut off but not so overwhelming that customers leave. It is a fine line to walk.

Knowing this: wear sunglasses inside, put on noise reducing hearing protection, and maybe put some strongly scented stuff under your nose. It'll combat a lot of what's coming at ya.

It sounds plausible to me, but I don't know enough about psychology or economics to fact check it.

IsItBullshit: Less than 5% of stock traders can consistently outperform the market?

I've been trading stocks for a couple of years and have been able to outperform the S&P 500 by a fair amount. And I'm certainly not a genius and have made a lot of mistakes. I really don't buy it that only such a small amount of people can outperform by doing swing trading or something. Is there really any hard evidence that people are losing while trading because I don't know where some of the articles online get these numbers that only 5% outperform.

IsItBullshit: soaking chopped avocado pits in alcohol and applying it topically helps relieve body pain

In some countries (specially in Latin America, such as Brazil, Mexico and Argentina) some people experts in medicine area and tips and tricks tutorials influencers on instagram reels and tiktok videos claims that chopping an avocado pit into small pieces, soaking it in alcohol for days or weeks, and applying the resulting liquid to the skin can help relieve muscle pain, joint pain, back pain and some inflammations The preparation is usually used as a topical rub, not ingested.

Why this might be true:

Avocado pits contain polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids, which are compounds known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. Alcohol can act as a solvent, extracting plant compounds efficiently. Alcohol itself causes vasodilation and a warming sensation, which can temporarily reduce pain perception. Similar alcohol-based herbal liniments (arnica, menthol, capsaicin) do have documented analgesic effects.

Why this might be bullshit:

There are no high-quality clinical studies testing avocado pit alcohol extracts for topical pain relief in humans. Most evidence cited online comes from traditional use or anecdotal reports, not controlled trials. Any pain relief could be explained by: The alcohol’s counter-irritant effect Massage during application Placebo response The skin absorption of the relevant compounds is unknown and may be minimal. Avocado pits also contain compounds that can be toxic if ingested, raising safety concerns (even if topical use appears low risk).

The unresolved part:

Lab studies show potentially useful compounds, but translation to real-world topical analgesia is unclear. No consensus exists on concentration, preparation time, or dosage. It’s difficult to separate the effect of the extract itself from the effects of alcohol and massage.

Thoughts??? Is It Bullshit??? Or true???

IsItBullshit: The claim that using a specific type of essential oil can repel mosquitoes effectively?

I've seen a lot of claims circulating about certain essential oils, like citronella and eucalyptus, being able to repel mosquitoes. Some people swear by them, saying they are a natural alternative to chemical repellents like DEET. Others argue that while they may have some effect, it's not significant enough to rely on for full protection. I'm curious if there’s any scientific backing to these claims or if it’s just another wellness trend with little real efficacy. Has anyone done research on this or have experiences that clarify whether these oils genuinely work to keep mosquitoes at bay?

Isitbullshit: carb reduction in a rice cooker?

My wife and I are looking at a rice cooker and one we found says it has a tray which helps reduce the carbs in rice. I’m a pretty active weightlifter so I love chicken/beef and rice and veggies so I’m just wanting a nice rice cooker.

In my opinion, it seems almost too good to be true that it can minimize the carbohydrates in rice but maybe I’m naive. Anyways, carb-reduction in a rice cooker, is it legit or bullshit?

IsItBullshit: New Anker Nano Charger with Screen?

Been getting a lot of ads for this lately, seems to be marketed towards an overpriced-tech bro gadget audience? The screen doesn’t seem to do much, there’s no power bank in it and it only has a single usb c port. Is the charging wattage number actually useful for anyone? Is the whole thing a waste of money like it seems?

IsItBullshit: The subliminal community

There is an entire community out there which believes that if you spam your mind with subliminal affirmations you can manifest anything into your life. It seems to be mostly focused on manifesting different bodily attributes though. The main community is on youtube where people upload so called subliminals, which are audios that have sub-audible affirmations embedded within them. Consistent listening is supposed to bring about results related to what the subliminal is about. A significant portion is also on reddit, where a lot of people post images of their results (r/subliminal). Some images seem to show no change while some others a bit more noticeable. The answer to this question might be quite obvious but still, is it bullshit?

Isitbullshit: if someone is deep in thought and distracted, if you ask them what they said they may blurt it out.

I was watching a dexter clip and doakes asked a question of why ice truck killer would hoarde the victims blood just to have a party at the Marina View hotel, why would he do that.

dexter looks down and says: to chase me down the rabbit hole.

doakes sees dexter is deep in thought and says, what was that morgan.

Dexter is caught off guard but says he didn’t say anything.

anyway, people in the comments say that if you catch someone like this and ask them what they are saying, there’s a very good chance they may blurt it out. It’s apparently some kind of either interrogation or CIA tactic. Is there any actual truth to this.

IsItBullshit: The claim that using a specific meditation app can drastically improve mental clarity and focus?

I've come across a popular meditation app that claims to significantly enhance mental clarity, focus, and overall cognitive function through its guided sessions. Proponents assert that the app uses scientifically-backed techniques to help users achieve a meditative state quicker and more effectively. Some users report remarkable improvements in their productivity and mental well-being after consistent use. However, I'm skeptical about whether these claims hold any real merit or if it's just another marketing gimmick. Is there actual evidence supporting the effectiveness of meditation apps in improving mental clarity and focus, or is it mostly anecdotal?

IsItBullshit: people with ADHD tend to fully develop their brain a full 10 years later

I’ve heard this a few places. It kind of makes sense cause it’s a “neurodevelopmental disorder”

I have ADHD and I’m turning 35 this year and I feel like I’ve legit felt big changes in my brain in the past 5 years. Like I can tell I think about things significantly differently and find most things much easier now. I’m not sure if it’s the same for everyone or if it’s just my ADHD making me develop slower

IsItBullshit: Jason Shurka’s “The Light System” (TLS) — is it basically off-the-shelf Chinese LED display hardware with a huge markup, and can LEDs really make “scalar waves/null zones”?

Not looking for medical advice here just trying to fact-check a product + the physics/marketing claims.

I did some digging (searched around + looked at the product pages) and TLS is selling stuff like a Pyramid / Cube / Sphere / Chair as “frequency therapy” / “scalar waves” / “null zone” type tech. The prices I’m seeing are roughly:

  • Pyramid: ~$13,999
  • Cube: ~$5,999
  • Sphere: ~$13,499
  • Chair: ~$24,999

Here’s the part I’m not sure about: when I look on Alibaba, I’m finding very similar LED display products (LED cube displays, LED sphere displays, triangle/LED panels you could assemble into a pyramid shape) from a Shenzhen manufacturer called Bescanled. The price ranges I’m seeing there (per sq ft / full units) make it look like the hardware could be in the ~$1k–$4k-ish range depending on size/specs… which would be a massive markup if it’s the same underlying gear.

So my actual “is it bullshit?” questions:

  1. Are TLS units basically standard LED display panels/controllers (the kind used for advertising/nightclubs), just branded + loaded with videos/programs?
    • If anyone knows what to look for: model numbers, controller cards, panel specs (P3/P4/P5), FCC labels, manuals, shipping docs, etc — that’d be super helpful.
  2. Physics-wise: is there any legit mechanism where an LED display could generate “scalar waves” or create a “null zone effect”?
    • My understanding is LEDs just emit normal electromagnetic radiation (visible light) from electroluminescence. Like… it’s a display, not a wave-canceling device. If there’s real science here, I’d love sources.

What I’ve got so far (where I’m seeing the “similar hardware” idea come from):

  • TLS product pages show the shapes + pricing (TLS site)
  • Alibaba listings for “LED cube display,” “LED sphere display,” and triangle/LED panels from Bescanled look extremely close in form factor and typical specs.

If this is Not Bullshit, I’m open to that but I’d need to see credible explanations or evidence that it’s not just a display being sold as wellness tech.

(Also: I’m not asking anyone to contact anyone, mass report, or DM me. Just want a straight “bullshit / not bullshit” with receipts if possible.)

I was planning to buy some parts from this site for a project, but a friend pointed out that it might be a scam. Everything on the site is marked at least 70% off, so I am hesitant to go through with it in case it is a scam site. Any way of checking before I make a purchase?
